Although not in robust health for some little time he was around the town as usual during the afternoon, and shortly after finishing his evening meal without warning passed away. Mr. Walker was born in Freetown seventy-seven years ago and was the son of the late John Walker. Early in life he learned the carpentry trade and for several years followed this occupation.

"He married May Hyde of Clyde River and farmed for a short period afterwards; he then moved to Summerside and became a member of the firm of M.F. Schurman Company Limited. He was a Director of that company for many years. While with this firm he acted in the capacity of mill foreman, and finding the work rather strenuous he resigned and decided to follow his first occupation as carpenter. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church.

"Mr. Walker leaves to mourn besides his sorrowing wife, two daughters, Jean (Mrs. Don MacFarlane) and Doris, both of Summerside; also three sisters, Mrs. Eliza Palmer of Summerside; Mrs. Ella Jardine, Kensington; and Mrs. Joseph Taylor of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; and two brothers, Stewart of New York, and Patterson of Kensington".

Obituary in The Guardian, published 14 April, 1948: "The death occurred suddenly last evening at his home on Fitzroy Street, Summerside, of Mr. Robert Walker, aged 77 years. The deceased, who was born at Freetown, came to Summerside in 1907 and entered the employ of Mssrs. M. F. Schurman Co. Ltd, where by his ability he gained promotion to the position of mill foreman. During his life in the community as a contractor he worked in the construction of many of the town's prominent businesses and residential properties and earned for himself an enviable reputation in his chosen field. He leaves to mourn his wife, formerly Miss Mae Hyde of North River, and two daughters, Doris, at home, and Jean, Mrs. Donald McFarlane, also of Summerside to whom deep sympathy is extended. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian Church, Summerside. Interment will be in the North Bedeque Cemetery."14,3,9

Article appearing in The Rifle Telegram May 26, 1932 - "A Community Loss by Walter Lawson Wilder. The people of the Rifle community have suffered a real loss by the accidental death of Robert Walker, local manager of the Mountain States Telephone Company. In his official position Mr. Walker came into contact with every business man of Rifle and with nearly every adult resident of Western Garfield County. His uniform good-nature, courtesy, and sincere spirit of helpfulness made for him a host of friends, and contributed in large measure to promote cordial relations between the people of this community and that public service corporation. It may be said with truth that every worthy cause of community interest might count upon the active support of Robert Walker. Always kind and generous as an individual he gave generously of his time and effort to matters of public service and thereby not only manifested his own character, but worthily represented a corporation that is held in high regard for its consideration of local community interests.

"As is usual in such cases, the number of Robert Walker's personal friends were greater than even he himself might have supposed. His departure is a community loss, and all the people share in the sorrow of this occasion."

Duckworth was in charge and he based his well-chosen words of comfort on the thought derived from Edgar A Guest's, "What I Call Living" and "If This Were All" and James Whitcomb Riley's marvelous poem "The Onward Trail".

"A male quartet from Clifton composed of Leslie Hall, Earl Hart, O. G. Brown and Bob Burkhalter sang "Mother Machree" and "City of God" and "Just Beyond".

"Pallbearers were Jack Munro, Miles Barrett, Fred Dunham, Hubert Burch, Ed Webb, Bert Taylor, E P. Brown and Luther Watt and interment was made in Rosehill cemetery.

"Robert Walton Walker, age 46 years, 5 months and 22 days, was born in Nathrope, Colo., on September 22, 1885. He was the oldest son in a family of seven children and from the time of the death of his father, Thomas Carol Walker, in September 1900, he was the sole support of his mother and the other children. His mother, Mrs. Mary Hawkins Walker, died in July, 1913.

"At an early age Mr. Walker moved to Leadville, Colo., where he was engaged in various mining activities until 1907, after which he was an electrical worker until 1911. In that year he moved to Mesa. Colo., where he was married on February 4, 1913, to Miss Mabel Gilbreath. Since June, 1918, he has been employed by the 9 Mountain States Telephone company, and by performing his duties faithfully and well was rapidly promoted to the position of manager.

"He was very active in this community, being one of the most enthusiastic members of the chamber of commerce, a member of the Apple Pie day committee for a number of years, and one of the organizers of the Rifle Relief association. Rifle has indeed lost one who has devoted much time and thought to the welfare of this community, and a friend to everyone and the profusion of floral offerings manifested the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors as well as by the company in whose employ he met his death two weeks ago Friday while trying to remove the wires from a telephone pole in the center of the river near Antlers. His wife, as well as many friends saw the boat overturn in which he and his helper, Joe Secord, were riding and the two men thrown into the swollen river. Walker was unable to swim, and it was only a few minutes until he was swept downward with the current and seen no more of until 11 days later when his body was found by Bert Evans on a little island three miles below Rulison.

"Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Mabel; two sons, Robert Lee, 18 and Merle Elroy, 13; a sister, Mrs. Frank Heely of Wilmington, Cal; and a brother, Gavin L Walker of Portland, Oregon."2

Burial*He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Sec. N 1/2S 1/2, Lot 22, Block 12, Rifle, Chaffee County, Colorado, U.S.A.. Plot D-12-2202. There is no marker.8,2

Biographical Note
There are a couple of interesting entries in two US Census returns, relating to Tom Walker.

1. 1910, Mesa, Colorado: Virginia Belle Walker, wife of Frank Heely, in the column for information on her father (Thomas C. Walker) there is the entry "Can. Scot - Gaelic".

2. 1920, Portland Oregon: Gavin Leslie Walker, brother of Virginia Belle Walker, in the column for his father's (Thomas C. Walker) mother tongue, there is the entry "Gaelic".

It's interesting that two siblings, 10 years apart in two states, would have entered Gaelic in the census returns for their father.

Tom Walker was a grandson of David Walker & Margaret Hetherington, and son of Robert Walker & Betsy Cairns. Tom emigrated in 1872 from Prince Edward Island to Colorado, so no living people today would have heard him talk, let alone his father Robert or grandfather David. However, the late Joan (Walker) Glover, born 1939, remembers as a young girl that Gaelic was heard in the home.8,9
(Son) Census HeadHouseholdHe was enumerated on the census of 1861 in the household of Robert Walker, as a son, in Lot 19, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.41978,-63.70972. Robert was listed as a farmer and a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces. The proprietor was Andrew T. Todd, with 30 years expired on a lease of 999 years. Land was leased at the rate of £1 per acre per year. Of the 100 acres, 60 were arable and of 2nd quality. In the year up to the 1861 census they grew 50 bushels of wheat, 50 bushels of barley, 400 bushels of oats, 50 bushels of buckwheat, 600 bushels of potatoes, 50 bushels of turnips and 6 tons of hay. They weaved 20 yards of fulled cloth, 40 yards of non-fulled cloth and made 100 lbs. of butter. They owned 3 horses, 6 cattle, 14 sheep and 10 hogs.

In the household were two people born in Scotland (Robert and Betsy), 1 in the British provinces (Ann Bramble), and 6 born on P.E.I. By age, there was 1 male under 5 (George Price), 2 females and 1 male between 5 and 16 (Jessie, Elizabeth, Isabella and Thomas - should be 3 females), 1 female between 16 & 20 (Mary), 1 male between 21 & 45 (David), 1 female and 1 male between 45 & 60 (Betsy and Robert), and 1 female over 60 (Ann Bramble). Ann B. was already married in 1855. William James had died in 1856. Margaret H. was already married in 1859.10
Emigration*Thomas Carroll Walker Sr. emigrated in 1872 from Prince Edward Island, Canada.11
Marriage*He married Mary Martha Hawkins, daughter of Jacob L. Hawkins and Virginia E. Brown, on 16 December 1880, in Nathrop, Chaffee County, Colorado, U.S.A., 38.712849,-106.200185. "Married: At Lathrop (sic), Colo., on the 16th of December, by James E. France, J.P., Thomas C. Walker, son of Robert Walker, Esq., of New Annan, PEI, to Miss Mary Link, of St. Louis, MO." (The Examiner, 25 February 1881, p. 4, col. 1).
Charles "Chuck" Parker states that in reporting the wedding of Mary and Thomas, the paper in Prince Edward Island used the surname Link for Mary. Chuck speculates that Virginia Brown may have married twice, and the first husband was a Link.12,5

Many Notches on His Gun
Career of the Late Tom Walker as Related by Himself

HE HAD NARROW ESCAPES
With the passing away the other day of Thomas C. Walker, the career of a turbulent life was brought to a close and another of the pioneers joined the silent majority.

Walker was a man of strong likes and dislikes, and for a friend nothing was too good; with an enemy the feeling was reversed and there was no such thing in Tom's make-up as forgiveness. He was absolutely without fear, the word was not in his dictionary, and this trait in his character led him into many scrapes, and cost him all the money that he ever made.

Born in Prince Edward Island of Scotch parents, fifty years ago, and when at the age of nineteen, a broad shouldered strapping youth, he found his way to New Mexico in 1869, and a few months later arrived in Colorado and settled in Chaffee county. This county at that time was a hot bed of cattle rustlers and horse thieves and honest men had a hard time to get along and justice was an outlaw.

It was about this time that several criminal cases were on the county docket for trial, and feeling was running so high that a change of venue was taken to Granite.

During the session of court Judge Dyer, the presiding justice, was brutally murdered, by a gang who considered that the judge was against them.

This was the element that Walker found himself associated with, and being possessed of all of the grit that is desirable in a man, although young, he was soon recognized as one of the nerviest men in the county, and one perfectly able and willing to cope with the rustlers, horse thieves and desperados that infested the county.

Tom after being in the county for a few months saw the opportunities for making money by engaging in the cattle business and took up a ranch, and at once started to improve it. By degrees he accumulated some cattle and in a few years was fairly on the road to success. On all occasions he protected himself from the raids of rustlers, and was never afraid to use his gun to enforce his rights. It gradually dawned upon the cattle thieves that they were against a man who did not fear them, and one who would protect his rights to the last, so they considered it the best policy to leave his cattle severely alone.

During the early 70's the sheriff of the county found that it was next to impossible, with the men under his control, to down the rustlers, and when he learned that Walker was not afraid of the gang, he called upon him and asked if he would join the sheriff's force to arrest and break up the gang. Walker said he would and was at once appointed deputy sheriff. Leaving a man in charge of his ranch he went to Buena Vista, where he made headquarters.

One forenoon, while sitting in the sheriff's office a ranchman entered and stated that early that morning thieves had run off thirty-seven of his horses and he wanted the sheriff to recover them. Receiving information from the man as to the direction taken by the thieves Walker saddled his horse and started in pursuit alone. After riding for several hours he caught up with two of the gang driving several horses at a place called Gold Dust. Walker at once ordered them to throw up their hands and to consider themselves under arrest. To this request they both opened fire, one of the bullets ploughing through Tom's hat, and the other going wild. Before Walker pulled his gun for action, another shot from the thieves struck the horn of his saddle. Walker then fired and one of the robbers fell from his saddle. The remaining bandit again fired this time hitting the skirt of Walker's saddle, when he returned the compliment by laying him low. Getting off from his horse Tom approached the dead thieves and found one was shot through the heart and the other that the bullet had lodged in the brain. He noticed that one was of slender build and with small feet and hands and concluded that he was a boy. Looking closer, the features appeared to be those of a woman, so unbuttoning the buckskin shirt worn by the thief he found that his conjectures were correct it was a woman. She was dressed in men's clothing, and it was from her gun that the two bullets came so close to cutting off Walker's earthly career. Rounding up the horses he returned to Buena Vista, notified his chief of what he had done and returned with help and buried the victims. He was not tried as the killing was justifiable being done in the discharge of his duty. This was the beginning of the end of cattle and horse stealing in Chaffee county.

While on a pleasure trip to Denver in '72 Walker got into some trouble with some Chinese and killed one. For this he was tried and after several trials was acquitted. Joseph W. Taylor was his attorney.

Returning home he got into trouble the following year by killing a man on a ranch near Buena Vista. The trouble arose over a title to a certain piece of ground and Walker was made custodian of it. One evening on going to the place he found the opposing faction in possession. One man, whose name is forgotten, was notified to leave, when a wordy war followed, then guns were pulled and Walker shot first. He was arrested, tried and acquitted. The opinion among the inhabitants regarding the killing was divided, some claiming it was done in self defense, others that it was murder. This second trouble cost Walker all he was worth and he had to mortgage his ranch to Joe Taylor his lawyer.

When the excitement at Leadville started Walker was one of the first to arrive, coming here in'78, and when the town was organized the following year he was appointed town collector by Mayor James. W. R. Kennedy was at the time town attorney. When Leadville was incorporated as a city Walker went on the police force.

In the spring of '80 John Kelly was killed in Tiger alley and Walker was arrested and charged with having committed the deed. Tom always asserted his innocence to the very last in this matter, and when he was tried the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The late Judge Weston was his lawyer.

One night in the late summer of '90 the Denver and Rio Grande express train east was held up at Cotopaxi, and the express car robbed. On the train were two retorts from the Twin Lakes Placer Co., shipped at Granite and billed to the mint at Denver. The robbers got the retorts and went into the mountains. One, implicated in the robbery came to Leadville a few weeks afterwards and was shadowed by a Pinkerton detective. Walker at the time was driving an express wagon and knowing the man he drove him to several places around town. The Pinkerton man concluded that Walker was in the deal and he was arrested charged with being accessory to the fact in holding up the train. He had a preliminary hearing before the United States commissioner and was discharged. The robbers were eventually caught and are now serving their terms at Canon City.

The following incident shows that Walker with all his faults was not devoid of some of the milk of human kindness. One Kirby killed a man named Nash at one of the mines here by hitting him on the head with a sharp axe. Kirby was backed up by John D. Morrissey, whose money saved him from being hung. He had three trials and was sentenced to the penitentiary for several years. On the expiration of his sentence, he returned to Leadville and after remaining for several months went to Kirber creek in Gunnison county. Late in the fall of '92 word reached the city that Kirby had been found dead in his cabin. Not a soul was near him when the final summons came and it is not known whether he ended the struggle himself or died a natural death. Walker knew him before he got into trouble and the old friendship returned for the dead, so he decided to give Kirby a decent burial. Starting out accompanied by one companion, Walker went over the old Cottonwood pass into Gunnison county, and to Kirber creek, where he found the cabin and the remains of Kirby, which he buried, and brought all of his effects to Leadville and turned them over to the relatives of the deceased. It was a hard trip as the mountains were covered by several feet of snow, and the weather was bitterly cold, but it made no difference to Walker who had started out to accomplish something and he did it.

Walker gave the above facts to a representative of the Herald Democrat several years ago with the request that they be published "when he had crossed the range," remarking at the same time, "I've been accused of doing a whole lot of things that I never had a hand in, but I solemnly, assure you I never killed a man unless in self defense."

The picture of Thomas with the mountain lion was sent by Charles Parker, grandson. This is Tom as Deputy Sheriff/Town Marshal for Leadville in about 1896. Charles' grandfather, Gavin, told him that they kept the lion "Jerry" locked in the barn with strict instructions for no one to bother him. Apparently one day when Tom was at work, either Robert or Thomas Jr. was playing with Jerry and got either bitten or scratched. Tom found out when he got home and immediately went to the barn and killed the lion, apparently on the assumption that once it had tasted people it was no longer safe to keep as a pet.2

This is Tom as Deputy Sheriff/Town Marshal for Leadville in about 1896, with his pet mountain lion, Jerry.

Biographical Note* The Walker homestead that was owned by Thomas James Walker was situated on the Summerside Highway (now called the Old Summerside Highway), just outside of Kensington, PEI. This house and farm remained in the Walker family until the late 1970's. It has since been renovated and modernized.4
Birth*He was born on 10 April 1834 in New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island. The John Walker family bible shows a birth year of 1835. I have chosen to change this to 1834 to coincide with the baptismal record, being closer to the event than the bible entry.2
He was the son of John Walker and Jane Davidson Weir.2

He leaves to mourn three sons and three daughters, as follows: John, Bert and Cecil, Mrs. Hammond Cannon, Summerside; Mrs. Geo. Brown, Margate, and Mrs. John Thompson, Kensington. The funeral was held on Sunday, a large number of people paying their last respects to a good friend and neighbor."11,12

Burial*He was buried in the Peoples Cemetery, Kensington, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, 46.44737,-63.62890. The religion differences between Thomas James Walker and Virginia Easter (Wiggins) Walker caused a slight problem upon his death. They both wanted to be buried together and both religions would not allow this to happen unless one of them switched, which neither of them would do. Apparently the problem was solved, as Thomas & Virginia (Wiggins) Walker are both buried in Peoples Cemetery, Kensington, PEI. This story was sent to the author by Kathy Sheehan, who was told this by her 2nd cousin, David Roscoe Walker.
