| Note* | [Summers.FTW] The most prominent of the Schurman descendants,can be found in any standard encyclopedia. He won a $1500 scholarship and studied at the University of London, at Edinburgh & Paris. He got his B.A. in 1877, his M.A. in 1878, in 1878 got his Doctorate. In 1886 he went to Cornell University as a Professor of Philosophy. In 1892 was elected President of the University, a position he held until 1921. In 1899 Pres. McKinley appointed him preident. of the 1st U.S. Phillipine Commission. 1912 Pres. Taft appointed him as U.S. Minister to Greece and Montenegro. Pres. Harding appointed him as U.S. Envoy to China. Pres. Coolidge appt U.S. Ambassador ext- ordinary to Germany in 1925. He held 13 Honorary Degrees. To his memory The National Sites and Monuments Board of Canada has erected a Cairn in Freetown, just west of where his Grandnephew Robert Schurman now lives. On the Bronze plaque is inscribed: Jacob Gould Schurman Educationalist, author and Ambassador. Professor at Acadia, Dalhousie and Cornell. President of Cornell University, 1892-1921 President of the first United States Phillipine Commission. United States Minister to Greece, Montenegro, and China and Ambassador to Germany. Born at Freetown, P.E.I., 22nd May, 1854. Died in New York, 12th August 1942. |

| Biographical Note* | Jessamine, called Jessie, was a twin to Henrietta. Birth dates for four children were found in registers of the Summerside Presbyterian Church. Further information is not available. Mrs. Beirnes (the only one in this branch of the family whose address was known by cousins in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, and Beaverton, Oregon) wrote, 'our family wants no part of being named in any family tree. We were ignored all these years and the others feel it's an intrusion at this late date to get friendly and become part of a large family for the sake of creating a tree, which they feel can be just as complete without our family, as it has always been." Jessamine and Giles lived in or near Summerside. About 1904 they moved to High River, Alberta, later going on to British Columbia.3 |
