Seth Noble1
M, #58568, b. 15 April 1743, d. 15 September 1807
Note* | Seth Noble, son of Thomas III and Sarah Root, was born 15 Apr 1743, andwas the well-known Rev. Seth Noble who came to Maugerville, N.B., 15 Jun1774, as pastor of the Congregational Church, the first settled ministeron the Saint John River following the expulsion of the Acadians. Sethmarried 1st, in 1775, Hannah Barker; 2nd, in 1793, Mrs. Reumah Emery; and3rd, in 1807, Mrs. Mary Riddle. He died at Franklinton (now Columbus),Ohio, 15 Sep 1807. James Hanney, the noted New Brunswick historian, in his account of theMaugerville Settlement, published in the New Brunswick Historical SocietyCollection, Vol. 1, 1894, tells us all would have been well with ParsonNoble and his Maugerville congregation had he been content to attendstrictly to their religious welfare. But Rev. Seth was from NewEngland, where the clergy had always been accustomed to exercising alarge share of authority in secular affairs, and he was also what somepeople in New England called a 'patriot,' and the majority of those inNova Scotia (now New Brunswick) a 'rebel.' Rev. Seth began to stir up his congregation to join with their friends inNew England in throwing off the authority of Great Britain. He wrote aletter to General Washington setting forth the great importance of thecapture of western Nova Scotia, and proposing to assist in such anenterprise if it should be undertaken. To make a long story short, in May 1777, Col. Gould was sent to the SaintJohn River by the authorities in Halifax, with a force to exact thesubmission of it inhabitants. They all took the oath of allegiance(although some broke it afterwards), and Col. Gould, on leaving the RiverSaint John, carried with him to Halifax, Isreal Perley, who had beenclerk of the rebel committee on the river. Parson Noble, with twoothers, Jonathan Eddy and Phinehas Nevers, escaped and reached Machias,Maine, by an inland route. There they joined Col. John Allen, who wasorganizing an expedition for the purpose of holding possession of theSaint John River on behalf of the Continental Congress. Parson Nobel never returned to New Brunswick, except with Col. Allen'sunsuccessful expeditions, which reached Saint John 02 Jun 1777, but hiswife remained at Maugerville for two years after his flight to Machias. And two of his sons, Joseph and Benjamin, apparently came to Sheffieldsome time after 1777, and later removed to Carleton County. This account is stated on page 2 and 3 in the book, 'Pioneer Families ofCarleton County New Brunswick', published for private distribution byGeorge H. Hayward, C.G., 29 Leeds Drive, Fredericton, N.B. E3B 4S7 Firstprinting, January 1994, Second printing, with revisions, February 1996. The following statement can be found on pages 124 and 125 in the book,'The St. John River and its Tributaries', by Esther Clark Wright: After the death of Captain Francis Peabody, in 1771, the leadership ofthe Maugerville community devolved upon Jacob Barker, Phineas Nevers, andIsrael Perly. Jacob Barker, for instance, was chosen as moderator of themeeting of the 'Subscribers to bond for the support of the Preachedgospel among us', on June 15, 1774, and his was the first name on thecommittee appointed to treat with Rev. Seth Noble, whom they purposed tocall to take charge of the church. Jacob Barker, second son of Jacob andMary Tamey Barker, and grandson of James and Mary Stickney of Rowley,Massachusetts, and great grandson of James Barker of Stragewell, Suffolk,England, who emigrated in 1637. Although Jacob Barker and his wife, MarySpofford, had only eight children, one of whom died young, and hisyounger brother Joseph, had only three, it is surprising how many St.John River families have acquired a barker strain. It is interesting tonote that, although the Re, Seth Noble married Joseph Barker's eldestdaughter and she shared his exile, her children returned to the St. JohnRiver to live. |
