Biographical Note* He was a native of Rhode Island, Slocum owned a farm at North Kingstown in partnership with his father. When the British landed in Rhode Island, he assisted Lord Percy by carrying provisions and intelligence information, but was discovered and tried for his life as a Loyalist. Afterwards, Slocum fled, and in 1778 he joined the British on Long Island, serving as a lieutenant in the militia. His father, Charles, was shot by a man named Babcock on 9 April 1777, possibly when Babcock and a party of Americans came to arrest his son. His mother, Sarah, was afterwards tried for forging Continental currency, which she used to pay her rent. She was put in the pillory, branded on the cheeks, and had her ears cropped. Sarah Slocum had eleven children. She later remained in Rhode Island, but went to New Brunswick for her hearing. Her son Ebenezer settled near Gagetown, New Brunswick. The family property was confiscated, and Ebenezer Slocum estimated the loss at £338 sterling. He was awarded £182 sterling. Emigration*He emigrated in May 1783 from North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island; Ebenezer was a farmer in North Kingstown, RI in 1777/78 (Rhode Island Colonial Records, vol. viii, pp. 174, 368). He left Rhode Island shortly after this and was a Lieutenant in the Loyal New Englanders on Long Island. He immigrated to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1783 with his wife, four children (two over ten, two under), and his uncle Eliezer Slocum aboard the ship Union. His two oldest children (Eleazer and Ruth) remained in Rhode Island, being reared by their uncle, John Cottrell. In 1784 they settled on the Saint John River, opposite Long Island, in what became Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick. Later they moved to Fanjoy's Point, Grand Lake. In 1787 he was a claimant to the British government for losses suffered in America.

Ebenezer and Esther emigrated on the ship Union, leaving Rhode Island for New Brunswick, arriving in Saint John, with 2 children, and in company with his uncle Eleazer. Their children Eleazer and Ruth remained in Rhode Island, reared by their uncle John Cottrell of Exeter Township.9,3,10,11

Name Variation Eliezer Slocum is also known as Eleazer Slocum.3
Birth*He was born on 25 October 1664 in Portsmouth Township, Newport County, Rhode Island.1
He was the son of Giles Slocum and Joan Cook
AltBirth*Another alternate birth date is on 25 December 1664 in Portsmouth Township, Newport County, Rhode Island.2
Marriage*Eliezer Slocum married Elephel Fitzgerald, daughter of Earl Edmund Fitzgerald and Marie Whittaker, on 26 November 1687 in Portsmouth or Dartmouth, Bristol County, Rhode Island.4,2
Death*Eliezer Slocum died before 30 July 1727, in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Rhode Island; Eliezer's will was proved 30 July 1727. His actual death date is not known.5
Biographical Note A copy of Eliezer's will is in the History of the Slocums. Eliezer resided in Dartmouth as a yeoman. According to the History of the Slocums, 'In the confirmatory deed of Governor William Bradford, 13 November, 1694, Eliezer Slocum and his brothers Giles and Peleg were named among the proprietors of Dartmouth which then included the present Townships of Dartmouth, New Bedford, Westport, and Fairhaven. He dealt quite extensively in lands, and was very successful in the accumulation of property considering the newness of the country and the various unfavourable circumstances of his time. The oppressions of the New Plymouth and Massachusetts governments show a marked contrast between the civil standing of these brothers, and all other members of the Society of Friends, who settled in Dartmouth and those who resided in Rhode Island. The former were excluded from the rights of citizenship and the privilege of holding office, though they were obliged to bear their proportion of the governmental burden; while the presence and counsel of the latter were much sought in directing public affairs. Eliezer's will was proved 30 July, 1727 and his estate was appraised at L5,790. 18s. 11d.1
