Death* | Davis Schurman Green died on 12 June 1936, at age 15 years, 9 months and 6 days, in Summerside, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada . Obituary: "The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Green of Summerside in the sudden bereavement which has come to them by the death of their only child, Davis, a bright lad of 15 years, who passed away about 4:30 o'clock last Thursday afternoon after only a day's illness. He attended school as usual on Wednesday, apparently in his usual health and had assisted in marking out the ball grounds for a junior game. After his return home from school he complained of feeling unwell and his condition the following day having become much worse, a doctor was summoned. The case was diagnosed as diphtheria and despite everything that was done his condition became such that death ensued.
"The sad event is deeply deplored as Davis was a bright and intelligent boy, a general favorite with his schoolmates and all who knew him. He was a pupil in Grade X of the Summerside High School and on Tuesday had written his arithmetic examination, making exceptionally high marks. His sudden removal from the activities of school life has saddened his comrades and leaves his parents stunned with grief. How the lad contracted the fatal malady has so far not been definitely ascertained. The funeral held Saturday afternoon was private, the services being conducted by Rev. Walter McCleary, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The service at the home was held on the lawn, there being no pallbearers. Interment took place at the People's Cemetery." Obituary: "Seldom has any event touched the sympathies of the residents of this community more deeply than the death of Davis Green, the 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Green of Summerside, who succumbed on Friday, June 12th to an attack of diphtheria after an illness of only two days. His grief-stricken parents deeply appreciate the many kindly expressions of condolence and beautiful floral tributes which were received, comprised of the following: [Tributes not transcribed]
"The funeral services held on the lawn on the following Saturday afternoon, were conducted by Rev. Walter McCleary, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The First Summerside Troop of Boy Scouts of which Davis was a patrol leader, was represented by Soutmaster Hallett, Assistant Scoutmaster Mollison, and a delegation of Scouts, there being no pallbearers. Interment was made in the People's Cemetery."3,4 |
