The esteem in which the late Mr. Thomas Hooper Schurman of New Annan was held was evidenced by the large number of people who attended the funeral yesterday afternoon. The service at the home was conducted by Rev. Mr. Hoddinott, assisted by Rev. C. A. Britton of Bedeque. Interment was made in the People's Cemetery, Summerside. The pallbearers were Messrs. Benjamin Pillman, John Pillman, Allie MacNeill, Arthur Wright, Alban Leckie, Donald Baker.

Mr. Schurman passed away at 6:30 last Saturday morning after almost a year's illness. He was 57 years of age, a son of the late George Schurman and he lived on the homestead with his parents until 34 years ago when he married Miss Leona Montgomery of New Annan and purchased a farm a short distance from his home, and there lived in harmony and contentment with his wife and three sons, Alfred, New Annan; Donald and Eldon at home, all of whom survive.

Mr. Schurman was an excellent farmer and a lover of horses, a good neighbor, always willing to do even the most casual acquaintance a good turn when occasion offered. Apart from his immediate family, his mother survives, also one brother, Harry, on the homestead, and two sisters, Mrs. Talmage Montgomery and Mrs. Henry Moase, both of New Annan. Two brothers, Leonard and Ray, died some time ago."3

Note*Vernon attended Prince of Wales College and received an engineering certificate from Acadia University in 1922. He owned and operated a wholesale greenhouse in Reading, Massachusetts from 1926 to 1967, in which year he retired. Before her marriage, Ethel worked as a metallurgical secretary for two years. She was in charge of advertising make up for the magazine Cosmopolitan. A member of the D.A.R., she has been treasurer and registrar of the chapter. She is a descendant of John Baker, Loyalist, who became William Schurman's neighbour when the loyalists settled Bedeque in the 1780's. They live 1971 at 456 Haverhill Street, Reading.1

Occupation*William Schurman was William Schurman was a Loyalist, farmer, merchant, shipbuilder, miller, cooper, Magistrate and Legislator. A tax list in 1771 shows him owning 5 blacks, 2 of them adults, and 3 girls under the age of 16, William considered himself to be 'English' and not 'American'. He left New York in 1783 and selling his holdings bought a ship and sailed to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, which had been created for 'Loyalists'. William left Shelburne and sailed to Prince Edward Island in the Fall of 1783. He bought land at the head of the Estuary of the Dunk River, which is now Central Bedeque. At one point he owned approx. 10 thousand acres of land encompassing the areas of Wilmot Valley, Norboro, Bedeque and Kelvin Grove.
