JAMES MCLAUGHLIN [This information is primarily from his sons, John and FrancesMcLaughlin] James was the oldest child of Owen and Anna McLaughlin. He was born onthe 7th of October, 1887 in Madison, near Irwin, PA. He turned fourteenjust a few weeks before his father's death, at which time he became the'man of the family', left school and went to work in the mines. Hismother was remarried a year later, which took some of the economicpressure off the boy. James was sometimes called 'Big Jimmy' by hisfamily, but was usually 'Jim'. In 1910, according to the census, James was working at the foundry as acoremaker. He married Anna Jeannette La Velle on October 4th, 1911 inJeanette, PA. He was almost 24 and she was 22. [She was born on the 8thof December, 1888, the first baby born in the town of Jeannette after itwas formed] The 1920 Census shows Jim's growing family living near his mother [theyare on the same census page]. James was 32 and working as a coal miner[probably in Rilton]. Jeannette A. was 31, Anna 7, Marie 5, Agnes 3,James 2, Rita 10 months. They eventually had eleven children: Anna [1912], Marie [1914], Agnes1916], James [1917], Rita [1919], John [1920], Owen [1921], Patrick[1923], Emma [1924], Frances [1927] and Bernard [1928]. The family moved a number of times during the early years, mostly livingin Irwin and Jeanette [where they rented the 'old stone house', built in1779]. In 1930 and '31, the lived rent free on the Shrum farm whileJeanette took care of Mrs. Shrum. The children remember having a bigvegetable garden and lots of milk. Meanwhile, Jim was hired by Westinghouse Airbrake, where he became ajourneyman coremaker. When the occasional layoffs came, he would go backto mining. He retired from Westinghouse in 1952. Jim was six feet tall, broad shouldered, strong and usually quiet. Hewas strict with his children, using a belt for corporal punishment - onboth boys and girls. He joined the Eagles Lodge in Jeannette, walkingthere every afternoon, even when he lived miles away. He liked to fishand was a good dancer, especially enjoying the polka. Although Jim was an imposing figure, Jeannette was the dominant partner.Occasionally Jeannette would leave the family and stay with a sister fora week or two. Then Jim would go to talk with her, and eventually bringher home again. Jeannette died on May 29th, 1973 in Jeannette, PA at age 84. James diedtwo years later, on June 27th, 1975, also in Jeannette, at age 87.

Mary Agnes (McLaughlin) Swarva was the first child of Dennis and Annie,was born in Irwin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on the 13th of June,1884. She was baptized in Immaculate Conception church there on July13th 1884. No second name is listed, but she later used Agnes as amiddle name. Her godfather was her uncle , James McLaughlin. By thetime she started school, the family had moved west to the Washingtonterritory and was living on their homestead at Mud Mountain (nearBuckley). She had just turned twelve, the oldest of six children, when they movedto Juneau, Alaska in 1896. Two years later, the deaths of three of thechildren left her with no one near her own age. The next survivingchild, Celia, was seven years younger. Mary was sixteen and in high school when the 1900 Census was taken. Shehad finished school and was working when her father died unexpectedly in1908, leaving her mother with eight younger children and anotherexpected, so she was able to help out financially. In the 1910 Census, she is not listed at the family home. She may havebeen living in Douglas, Juneau County, where she worked, but most ofthose Census pages are faded and illegible. Meanwhile, George Lewis Swarva (who was born in Seattle, on September 30,1888 and graduated from the University of Washington in 1911) moved toJuneau where her worked for the Alaska Mining Company as an engineer andassayer in the nearby town of Douglas. George and Mary were married onMay 22nd, 1917 in Juneau. The 1920 Census lists them in the First District, Juneau, Douglas IslandPrecinct on page A31. Most of the page was unreadable, but names andages could be made out. Two sons, George and Joe, were born to them in Alaska. They moved to 851South 96th Street in Seattle in 1924. George went into business as ownerof a coal company and in following year, the family welcomed its thirdchild, Nancy. Both George and Nancy were active in the democratic Party,so when Franklin D. Roosevelt came into office in 1933, George wasappointed head of the Seattle Assay Office. He remained there until hisretirement in 1955. Mary died in Seattle on the 14th of Mach, 1957, at the age of 72. Shesuffered from diabetes for many years. George later remarried, and diedon May 19th, 1968. As the oldest daughter in a large family, Mary always had a great senseof responsibility. She was short, about 5' 1' or 5' 2', and had blackhair. Her granddaughter recalls her saying that if you weren't Irish,you weren't anything - (despite the fact that she married a Scandinavian.) Swarva, former officer in charge ofthe United States assay office here many years. Mrs. Swarva was born in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Dennis and Anne McLaughlin. The family homesteaded at Mud Mountain near Buckley in 1888. Mrs. Swarva attended schools there and in Juneau, Alaska. She came to Seattle from Juneau with her husband in 1924. The family home is at 851 S. 96th St. (It may be Burns Street now 1999) Survivors besides Mr. Swarva are two sons, Joseph and George L. Swarva, Jr., and a daughter, Nancy C. Swarva, all of Seattle; foursisters, Mrs. Celia Theile and Mrs. Rose McMullen, both of Juneau, and Anne and Catherine McLaughlin, both of San Francisco: three brothers, Dennis McLaughlin, San Francisco, Joseph McLaughlin, Portland, Oregon, and John McLaughlin, Juneau, and two granddaughters.

OWEN ALOYSIUS MCLAUGHLIN [Most of the following information was supplied by his children,Mary Cathrine, Leo and Loretta] Owen was born on the 13th of July, 1892, in Roscoe, Pa. The family movedto the North Irwin area, where he lived until he was about 25. he was 9years old when his father died. He attended Immaculate ConceptionSchool, but nobody knows for how long. He was still very young when heleft school and began working in the mines in order to help support thefamily. On July 18, 1918, at the age of 26, he was inducted into the army and wastrained to be a blacksmith. He was then sent to France to serve with thecalvary. He was discharged in July, 1919. After the war, he returned to the family home. In the 1920 Census, he islisted as 27 years old, in the McLain household, and working as a clerkfor a manufacturing company. Owen and his brother, Patrick, were both exceptional runners. Pat wassupposed to run in a race one day, but became ill, so Owen substitutedfor him at the last minute. He ran from Noth Irwin to Jeannette,arriving at the race site just at starting time and entered the racewithout changing his pace. He placed second, but the strain caused alung injury, which was referred to as a 'cracked lung. His doctorrecommended that he go back to work in the mines until his lung healed[because it was thought that the air in mines was good for lung ailments]. After his recovery, he took a job as a salesman for Coca Cola, and thenfor a company that made silk stockings. While working in Coshocton,Ohio, he met Beatrice RODMAN. They decided to marry, but delayed thewedding while she recuperated from a serious operation. Owen andBeatrice were married on the 20th of November, 1926. He was 34 and shewas 30. [Beatrice was born on the 13th of October, 1896, Clyde, NY.] They settled in North Irwin, where he worked as a machinist forWestinghouse Air Brake. He was employed there until his final illness.Six children were born to them; Mary [1928], Thomas [1930], Leo [1932],William [1934], Loretta [1937], and Eileen [1938]. Owen died on the 10th of January, 1950 at the age of 57. The cause ofdeath was colon cancer which had metastasized to the liver. Beatricedied November 27, 1967 at age 71. 'An interesting incident occurred in North Irwin when he was a youngboy. Another boy named Fritz was trying to reach and help his brotherwho was being electrocuted by a live wire. Our Dad prevented him fromtouching his brother and being electrocuted himself. Years later, whenwe would run into Fritz as an older man, he would tell us how our Dadsaved his life.' [Loretta McLaughlin] Owen was about 5'10', had brown eyes and auburn hair that turned whiteprematurely. He was meticulous, hard working, steadfast, generous andwas very paternal even before having children of his own. He hadexceptional endurance and a high tolerance for pain. His specialinterests were current events and sports, especially hockey, ice skatingand running.
