| He was the son of James Gilbert Damon and Martha J. Carter. | |
| Marriage* | James Hartson Damon married Theresa Jane Warren, daughter of Phineas Gustavus Warren and Miriam Lindsay Marden, on 31 December 1879 in Bradford, Stark County, Illinois, U.S.A.. |
| Note* | Lived near Waldo, Josephine County, Oregon in 1913, and in 1920 - 1921,his (perhaps a widow by then) lived at 333 4th St., Bremerton, Washington James Hartson Damon was born in 1851 in Redding, Mass. He married Theresa Jane Warren on Dec 31, 1879 in Bradford, Stark County,Illinois. and by 1881 the Damons were still living in Bradford when theirfirst child, Eva Mae Damon was born. By 1888, they were living in York, Nebraska, where their son Warren G.Damon was born. We have a report card for his daughter Eva Mae Damonfrom York Public Schools, where she was in the third grade in June, 1888.(She averaged 92% in 'scholarship' and 95% in 'deportment'!) It wassigned by her mother, 'T.J.Damon'. By 1913, James Hartson lived near Waldo, Oregon (Josephine Co.)--Interestingly enough, his wife, Theresa Jane Warren was born in WaldoCounty MAINE! We have a photo of James Hartson panning for gold inWaldo, Oregon. It should be known that this area around Cave Junction,Oregon, is called the 'Illinois Valley'. (James Hartson married TheresaJane Warren in Stark Co., ILLINOIS.) His son Warren 'was selling newspapers at an early age in Seattle, Tacomaand Portland'-- Warren G. Damon's obituary, Mohave County Miner, Kingman,AZ, Aug 1, 1930. We would assume that Warren's parents, James HartsonDamon and Theresa Jane had moved to those northwest cities. In 1920-21, his wife Theresa Jane (perhaps a widow by then?) lived at333-4th St., Bremerton, WA. in 1913. |

| Will* | He left a will on 3 July 1655; He signed a will on 3Jul 1655 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Left to his wife Reana' over and besides the part of the estate which I received with her uppon my mariage to her' 40 shillings a year for live, paid 1.2 in fruits and 1/2 in wheat. Household goods equally divided amongst 5 children. Gave his cousin Anna Newcomen a cow, and Elder Frost 40 shillings. To his daughter Eliz Fanning 50 pounds in cattle and corne, to 3 youngest children 50 pounds each at age 21, or a year after mariage. Remainder he left to his sone Samuel; executor with Thomas Fanning, son in law and friends Richard Jacson and Thomas Danforth. Executers were to pay yearly 5 pounds each to his sone Joseph, daughters Sarah and Mary in corn or cattle. His signature showed a readable hand. Witnessed by Jonathon Shepard and Thomas Danforth. The inventory showed a mansion house, orchard, 26cultivated land 24 acres uncultivated 2 acres meadow, 4 acres salt meadow2 acres remote meadow, 4 acres Chesters meadow 65 acres remote dividents (sic) 29 acres beyond the great plain, 7 acres remote meadow with the value estimated at 160 pounds. He left some books: The soul's Conflict, a book by Mason, others by Rogers, Giffords, and Mathers, a psalm book, and a great bible. The usual suits, cloaks, pants, shoes, musket, sword, fowling piece, hour glass, oxen cows calves colt etc. The estate was divided 14 Jun 1722. He died on 6 Jul 1655 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., and MA. Arrived in America prior to July. 25, 1636 when Robert was granted 25 acres at Watertown, MA where he settled. Granted 5 lots. Purchased the home stall of Nicholas Jacobs: 13Acres near a later U.S. Arsenal. Admitted freeman 14 mar 1638/1639. Moved to Cambridge in 1651. Released from training Apr 1655. His son Samuel came with him, but daughter Elizabeth (age 2) came with her maternal grandfather. It may be supposed that this arrangement was made due to the recent or expected birth of son Thomas about 1635. A constable at Watertown in 1651, he removed to Cambridge about 1654, possibly encouraged by both his second marriage and the following entries in the Watertown records: 'at a meeting of the Selectmen the 8/4/1654 Rebert Geneson and John Knap Complaining that Robert Daniell that hee Did not fence his pportion within their feild -- It Did appeere by testymony of Mr whitny and his owne Confession that all his Land was by his owne act in a generall feild with them and hee Could not make it appeere that he hath taken himsefe orderly out The sentance of the Select men is that wher as it Dooth apeere that Robert Daniel hath a paffell of Land within their feeld Containing 8 or 10 akers mor or Les, that he shal fence it by equall pportion with the rest of the Comoners.' | Biographical Note* | Benjamin was the progenitor of the Island Darbys. He was a loyalist from Newburg, New York, according to family tradition, from Rhode Island, according to Ada MacLeod. (a) He settled in St. Eleanors shortly after William Schurman settled in Central Bedeque, and, like him, was for a time a member of the provincial legislature. He died March 3, 1844, aged 100, according to his gravestone. He was twice married. By his first wife, whose name we do not know, he had at least two children, Elizabeth and Mary. He married as his second wife Mrs. Sarah Bremble (ca. 1758-1825 (b)), a widow with several daughters (one of whom, Mary, married Peter Schurman, eldest son of William Schurman the Loyalist), and with her had George, Benjamin, Isaac, Netus, Lois (called Lucy), Deborah, Esther, Hannah, Susannah, and perhaps others. (c) Footnotes: (a) "Some Loyalists of Prince Edward Island" in the Dalhousie Review, October 1930, p.328. (b) The year given on Sarah's gravestone, immediately behind the St. Eleanors Anglican Church, is almost illegible and looks like 1822 than anything else; but he death notice appeared in the register for Friday, June 3, 1825.
