The pall bearers were: Stuart Ducan, Roy Hill, Horace Everett and Herman White. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in the family lot. Mr. Merritt was a retired contractor and builder, and an honorary consultant and trustee of the Bethel Baptist Church. CHARLES ERNEST EVERETT MERRITT was born Novemaber 25, 1888, in Bristol, New Brunswick, Canada. During most of his adult life, we worked as a carpenter craftsman and contractor in Fort Fairfield, Maine. At first he worked in partnership with his brothers (as told by Thomas H. Stone of the construction of his fathers house on Currier Road which the Stone family moved into on 1-1-15. Othniel. R. Merritt had been the lead carpenter and Charles and perhaps other brothers worked with him.) Later Charles was involved in the carpentry business on his own and with his sons. Charles father having died when he was 5, and Charles only had four years of schooling himself. It was a source of great pride to him that all his children were high school graduates. Charles married Mary Grace Findlen in 1915 and four daughters were born to them in Fort Fairfield. The second daughter, Frances, born 5-14-18, died in 1923 in Fort Fairfield. In about 1923, Charles moved with his family to Saskatchewan where his brother Othneil had relocated. The first son, James, was born in Unity, Sask. Charles endeavor there was in operating some kind of a store. Within a year, however, the Merritts returned to Fort Fairfield, savings depleated, and reestablished themselves again with money Grace had saved from her salary earned teaching school before their marriage. Three more sons and a daughter were subsequently born there. On Charles 49th birthday in 1939, his wife Grace died of cancer. On June 19, 1941, Charles married Caroline Shannon Grass of Fort Fairfield, in Andover, New Brunswick. Carrie graciously and industriously stepped in to finish raising his children. Charles worked less and less, especially after a car accident in the late 50s. He died at the age of 78 on 10-24-66 in the Community Hospital at Fort Fairfield. |
