Note*From Armstrong, Emmet Co. Iowa (Newspaper) (from Ken Olson, gr. nephew) A LONG TIME RESIDENT GONE: George H. Dyer passed away on Satuday morning,Funeral on Sunday. 'George Hazzard Dyer died at his home in the village of Armstrong, lastSaturday morning, Dec. 5, 1914, after an illness of some months withstomach trouble and attendant complication. The funeral was held onSunday from the Presbyterian church. We are indebted to his relatives forthe following history and other information. George Hazzard Dyer was born in New York state Aug 11, 1843. His motherdied when he was about 14 years of age, and consequently he spent hisboyhood away from home. His father moved to Illinois later. He was thesecond oldest of eight sons and daughters, they being Dewitt Dyer ofHouston, Minn; Spencer Dyer of Pipestone, Minn; Mary Winters Dyer; whodied a few years ago at Madison, S. D; Hattie Case of California; MarthaVance of Homestead, Mont; Erastus W. Dyer of California; and a sisterwho died in infancy. He spent some years in army service, after which he came to MartinCounty, Minn., where he occupied a homestead until the grasshopperscorge. He then moved to Armstong, about nineteen years ago., where hehas lived most of the time since. He was married to Mary A. Elwiss ofBlue Earth, Minn., in 1871. Four chldren were born to them: George Dyerof Mason, WIs; Mrs Ruth E. Dyer Owens of East Chain, Minn; Daisy A.Dyer Robin of Minneapolis, Minn., and Arthur C. Dyer of St. Louis, MO. The deceased united witht Wesleyan Methodist Church about 25 years ago, receiving advancement in experience later, and during his last illness hereceived great help spiritually, at times praising the Lord and quotingscripture, with the love of God being shed abroad in his heart. He wouldsay, 'Oh, how I love my wife and children.' When asked if he did notwant to stay then, he would say, 'No, I love my Saviour more,' and at onetime said, 'I see my Saviour--I see Him'. He fell asleep in Jesus, Dec. 5 and the funeral was held on Sundayafternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. Sutton of Armstong, Rev.Mrs. Pollock of Esterville, and was laid to rest in the Armstrongcemetery, awaiting the resurrection day, when 'we shall read love'sshining letters in the rainbow of the spray; we shall know each otherbetter when the mists have cleared away.'

Jennings The 1840 census only lists head of household and number of people in age ranges. We find George H. Dyer in Annsville, Oneida County, NY (page211). There is one male and one female 20 to 30 years old and a male 70to 80 and a female 50-60. Is this young George and his new wife Eliza caring for his (or her) elderly parents? Or is George H. the older man's name and they still have 2 children (or George and his wife) living with them? Other Dyers in Oneida County are: Alexander in Augusta (page 332, age 40-50, wife 30-40, daughter 5-10); Edmund in Augusta (page 331, age 40-50, wife 20-30, sons; 1:5-10,1:10-15, daughters; 2:<5, 1:5-10); Lyman in Augusta (page 331, age 20-30, wife 20-30); Horace H. in Marcy (page 039); Milton in Marcy (page 038); Richolafs in Vernon (page 410, age 50-60, wife 50-60, daughters; 1:5-10,1:15-20, 1 free colored <10); Sylvanus in Marshall (page 354, age 70-80, wife 60-70). By the 1850 census, the George H. Dyer family has a strong beginning in Florence, Oneida County, NY (page 202). George is 36 (though he was actually 34), born in NY, a farmer who owns $2,300 property. His wife,Eliza, is 38 (though she was actually 37) and was also born in NY. Their children and ages (as listed in this census - note that relative ages seem to shift around from census to census though it is subject to misreading as all of this is taken from microfilms of handwritten material): Dewitt (9), George H. (7), Spencer (5), Erastus W. (3), MaryAnn (1) all born in NY. Mary Cornell(sp?), 16 born in NY is also in the household; probably a 'domestic'. Two houses away is Hannah Dyer, age 60born in Connecticut with $200 property and Elsey Dyer, age 25 born in NY.Is Hannah George's mother? An aunt? What relation might Elsey be? The Houston County (MN) History (1982) says that George's wife's name was Ann Eliza Dana and that she died in April, 1858. So it comes as no surprise that George had remarried by the 1860 census. What is surprising is that his new wife was 18 years younger than his first wife. In the 1860 census, George H. Dyer is still in Florence, Oneida County,NY (page 817). George is 44, born in NY, a farmer who owns $1,100 real and $600 personal property. His new wife, Rebecca, is 30 and was born in NY. Here's where the ages start to deviate from earlier records. Dewitt(18), A___so (this must be A. Spencer's first name) (15), Erastus W.(13), Nancy (10), Harriet (9), Martha (5) all born in NY. Note that George and Mary Ann are missing and Nancy, Harriet, and Martha are new arrivals. We find young George in the Town of Camden, Oneida County (page873) age 18, listed as a laborer apparently working for Harry(sp?)Scovill(sp?) in whose house he is living. Camden is only a short distance from Florence. Mary Ann may have died or her name was changed to Nancy(name changes seem to be a 'thing' with this family). Since she was listed as being 1 year old in 1850, it might be expected she would be 11in 1860, but she may have been less than 1 in 1850 (I don't see any age 0or fractional ages in this part of the census). Also living in the house is Sarah Kinnsley(sp?)(Kingsley?), age 17, a domestic born in NY. Other Dyers in Oneida County in 1860 census (incomplete list - don't have index): Dewitt in Camden (page 943, age 16, clerk) Dewitt! This must be a relative or it could be that Dewitt was counted twice and has the wrong age. This last explanation is consistent with the story in the History of Houston (MN) County (1882), which says he left home at the age of 16 and entered a mercantile establishment, where he remained until 1862. There is also a Clinton Dyer in Precinct 7, West Troy, Rensselaer County,NY (page 657). Since the unusual name Clinton seems popular in this family, he must be a relative as well. The 1870 census shows two households of Dyers next door to each other in Houston, Houston County, Minnesota (page 1107). George H. Dyer is listed as 54 years, born in NY, a merchant of dry goods and groceries with real property worth $400. He has a new wife, Nancy A., who is 9 years younger than his second wife (31 yrs, keeping house, born in NY) and a son,Edward (1 yr, born in MN). Also in the house with George were 3 Wilber children: Albert (12 yrs), Sarah (10 yrs), and Christina (8 yrs). These must be Nancy's children from her first marriage. The 1880 Census of Walan listed in his household Geo. H. (64) Nancy A.(42) Edward (11) LaFayette (8) May (6). The 1885 Census listed Geo. H. (69) Anna (48) Edwin (16) Laffail (13) May(11). In the house next door are some of his other children; Dewitt C. (C looks like L.) (25 yrs- should be 29), A. Spencer (24), Harriet (17), and Martha (15). (See Dewitt C. Dyer for more information about this.) The1870 census seems to have wrong ages for several children. Missing are George H. Jr.., Erastus W., Mary Ann (again), and Nancy. I need to recheck census for George. There is an Erastus W. Dyer in Madison, Lake County,SD in the 1870/75 and 1880 (page 188) census that I bet is this son of George. He is also listed in the 1890 Roll of Honor for Civil War veterans. (Haven't checked any of these sources yet.) There is a Mary Dyer listed in Caledonia (page 1038) who is 19 and was born in NY. She is in the house of Thomas Abbotta and is at school. Nancy (or Mary Ann)would be about 20 years and could be married. George appears to have moved from NY to MN between 1860 and 1865. My guess is about 1864 because George and Nancy were married in MN in April,1865 but, because Nancy was born in NY, I guess they met in NY. This is all conjecture at this point. George and Nancy appear to have moved to Whalan about 1875 as their daughter, Eliza May, was born in Houston in 1874 but they are not living in Houston for the 1875 state census. The article in the Houston County History (1982) by Daphne (Dyer)Baumgartner says: '[My great grandfather was] born January 10, 1816, in Waterlo [should be Westerlo], Albany County, New York. George Hazard Dyer married Ann Eliza Dana, who was born April 11, 1813. She died in New York State in April 1858. My great grandfather eventually settled in Whalan where he died May 13, 1896. My daughter, my cousin, Darrel Leland Dyer, and I found his grave there in the summer of 1978.' =========================================================== History of Fillmore County, MN. On pages 388 and 389 appeared this biography which I later found at the Fillmore Co. Historical Center this summer. (e-mail from Ken Olson) 'George H. Dyer, one of the representative men of Fillmore County, and the leading merchant of Whalan, was born in Westerlo, Albany Co., NY on the 10th January 1816. His father, George H. Dyer, (was this Hazard or someone else?) was born in Rhode Island, and moved to New York in 1794.He married Mrs. Nickerson, whose maiden name was Hannah Jones, niece of Commore Jones. (John Paul Jones was really John Paul who added Jones to escape the law) The family moved to Oneida County (Florence) in 1833,where George, the subject of our sketch, was married to Miss Ann Eliza Dana in 1840. (I have complete Dana data if you would like it) He was engaged in farming for a few years; then began his mercantile career in Empyville (near Florence, NY), continued in the same one year, and returned to his farm near his old home. His wife died in 1858 leaving eight children. In 1860, he married Miss Rebecca Murdock, who died eighteen months later. In 1861, he removed to Palatine, Cook County,Illinois (just outside Chicago), and three years later to Minnesota, locating on a farm in Houston County.(Haven't located it yet but think it might be near Money Creek a few miles outside of Houston.) Mr. Dyer was united in matrimony with Mrs. Nancy Wilber (Was it Wilbur or Wilber or Wilbor? Where did she come from? There were Wilbors near his farm in South Westerlo, Albany, NY) in 1865. In 1867, he opened a general store in the village of Houston, and fours years later transferred the same to his son, Dwight C., (I think it should be DeWitt Clinton Dyer not Dwight,I have Nancy Baumgartner's Dyer Genealogy if you would like it)) who now carried on the business. Mr. and Mrs. Dyer came to Whalan in 1871 (Small town on scenic Root River which seems to have been populated with Scandinavians). He erected his present store (Whalan had a huge fire which destroyed the store and many other buildings. His house still stands and I have a picture of it and talked with present owner.) the same year, keeping a general line of groceries, dry goods, hardware, etc.He was a member of the first village Council, and is now the President;has also held other local offices. His grandfather, Charles Dyer,(usually spelled either Dyar or Dyre) was a native of Rhode Island, and distinguished himself as major in the Battle of Bunker Hill, inconsequence of which he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, and engaged in a number of important battles. The father of the latter was born in Belfast, Ireland, and among the early settlers of Rhode Island. He was Captain in the British Navy in the war against the French in which he was severely wounded in the face and discharged in consequence. Mr. Dyer has a sister, Miss Elsie Dyer, living in Houston (I found buried in Money Creek Cemetery where a number of Dyer and Vances are buried). His only brother died when young, Albany County, NY. ( I think he might have been buried in Oneida Co., NY because I did find a Dyer buried in Old Taberg Cemetery, Annsville, NY south of Florence, NY and Empyville as well as in Grilley Cemetery, Florence.)
