He was the son of David Walker and Margaret Hetherington.1

BaptismRobert Walker was baptized on 17 March 1811 in Ruthwell Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, 54.973316,-3.408452; see the caption for the birth exhibit.1
Emigration*He emigrated in 1821 from Scotland; Robert is listed in the Patrons Directory in the 1880 Meacham Atlas as having settled in New Annan. In 1821 he would have been a young lad of 10 years. If we can accept this date as accurate, it lends credence to my theory that his father emigrated at least one year before.8
Marriage*He married Elizabeth Cairns, daughter of Thomas Cairns and Agnes Wilson, on 6 March 1834. In St. John's Anglican Church, St. Eleanors, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.

LicenseRobert Walker was granted a license to operate a tavern in New Annan. Robert is in the "List of Persons authorised by License to Retail Spirituous and other Liquors". in 1847 in New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.11
(Witness) MarriageHe witnessed the marriage of Peter Schurman and Janet Cairns on 15 June 1847 in the United Church, North Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.36518,-63.72410; they were married "by license from Lieutenant Governor", by Rev. Robert S. Patterson, recorded 1 December 1847. Witnesses were Robert Walker and George Mabey Price.12
OccupationRobert Walker was granted a "Country Tavern License" on 13 October 1855 in "Walker Inn", Lot 19, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.41978,-63.70972.13
The original "Walker Inn", shown here in 2000. The author assumes that the house dates to 1820, as it was in the autumn of that year that David Walker was first granted a license to sell liquors.
License*He was granted a country tavern license in Lot 19 (Licenses Book #6, p. 92-93). on 24 November 1858 in New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.14,15
LicenseHe was granted a country tavern license in Lot 19 (Licenses Book #6, p. 148-149). on 24 November 1860 in New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.14,16
(Head of Household) Census HeadHousehold*He appeared on the census of 1861 as Head of Household in Lot 19, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.41978,-63.70972.Robert was listed as a farmer and a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces. The proprietor was Andrew T. Todd, with 30 years expired on a lease of 999 years. Land was leased at the rate of £1 per acre per year. The landowner (probably an Englishman) was Andrew T. Todd. Of the 100 acres, 60 were arable and of 2nd quality. In the year up to the 1861 census they grew 50 bushels of wheat, 50 bushels of barley, 400 bushels of oats, 50 bushels of buckwheat, 600 bushels of potatoes, 50 bushels of turnips and 6 tons of hay. They weaved 20 yards of fulled cloth, 40 yards of non-fulled cloth and made 100 lbs. of butter. They owned 3 horses, 6 cattle, 14 sheep and 10 hogs.

In the household were two people born in Scotland (Robert and Betsy), 1 in the British provinces (Ann Bramble), and 6 born on P.E.I. By age, there was 1 male under 5 (George Price), 2 females and 1 male between 5 and 16 (Jessie, Elizabeth, Isabella and Thomas - should be 3 females), 1 female between 16 & 20 (Mary), 1 male between 21 & 45 (David), 1 female and 1 male between 45 & 60 (Betsy and Robert), and 1 female over 60 (Ann Bramble). Ann B. was already married in 1855. William James had died in 1856. Margaret H. was already married in 1859.17
1861 Canada Census, showing entries for brothers Robert and John Walker, New Annan, Prince Edward Island.
City Directory*He appeared in the City Directory in 1864 in Lot 19, Travellers Rest, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Robert Walker was listed in the 1864 Hutchinson's P.E.I. Directory as a farmer.18
Appoint*He was appointed the first Postmaster on 1 July 1878 in New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.19
Biographical Note* Robert is listed in the 1880 Meacham Atlas. In the Lot 19 section he is shown as living in New Annan, was a Post Master and farmer. Nativity: Scotland. Date of Settlement: 1821. If this date is accurate it supports my theory that his father David might have emigrated alone and settled the property in New Annan before bringing his family.8
(Head of Household) Census HeadHouseholdHe appeared on the census of 1881 as Head of Household in Lot 19, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, 46.41978,-63.70972.Included in the household were Robert's wife Elizabeth (Cairns), son George Price Walker, and grandson Ewen Jamieson (son of Ann Bramble Walker and William Jamieson). Death*Robert Neill Walker died on 13 April 1948, at age 77, in Summerside, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Obituary in the Summerside Journal: "The Sudden Death of Mr. Robert Walker - The citizens of Summerside were greatly shocked when it became known that Mr. Robert Walker had suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday evening, April 13th.
Although not in robust health for some little time he was around the town as usual during the afternoon, and shortly after finishing his evening meal without warning passed away. Mr. Walker was born in Freetown seventy-seven years ago and was the son of the late John Walker. Early in life he learned the carpentry trade and for several years followed this occupation.

He married May Hyde of Clyde River and farmed for a short period afterwards; he then moved to Summerside and became a member of the firm of M.F. Schurman Company Limited. He was a Director of that company for many years. While with this firm he acted in the capacity of mill foreman, and finding the work rather strenuous he resigned and decided to follow his first occupation as carpenter. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Walker leaves to mourn besides his sorrowing wife, two daughters, Jean (Mrs. Don MacFarlane) and Doris, both of Summerside; also three sisters, Mrs. Eliza Palmer of Summerside; Mrs. Ella Jardine, Kensington; and Mrs. Joseph Taylor of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; and two brothers, Stewart of New York, and Patterson of Kensington".

Obituary in The Guardian, published 14 April, 1948: "The death occurred suddenly last evening at his home on Fitzroy Street, Summerside, of Mr. Robert Walker, aged 77 years. The deceased, who was born at Freetown, came to Summerside in 1907 and entered the employ of Mssrs. M. F. Schurman Co. Ltd, where by his ability he gained promotion to the position of mill foreman. He remained with the company until his retirement several years ago. During his life in the community as a contractor he worked in the construction of many of the town's prominent businesses and residential properties and earned for himself an enviable reputation in his chosen field. He leaves to mourn his wife, formerly Miss Mae Hyde of North River, and two daughters, Doris, at home, and Jean, Mrs. Donald McFarlane, also of Summerside to whom deep sympathy is extended. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian Church, Summerside. Interment will be in the North Bedeque Cemetery."14,3,9

Burial*He was buried in North Bedeque Cemetery, North Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, 46.36224,-63.72544. Black marble.

Article appearing in The Rifle Telegram May 26, 1932 - A Community Loss by Walter Lawson Wilder. The people of the Rifle community have suffered a real loss by the accidental death of Robert Walker, local manager of the Mountain States Telephone Company. In his official position Mr. Walker came into contact with every business man of Rifle and with nearly every adult resident of Western Garfield County. His uniform good-nature, courtesy, and sincere spirit of helpfulness made for him a host of friends, and contributed in large measure to promote cordial relations between the people of this community and that public service corporation. It may be said with truth that every worthy cause of community interest might count upon the active support of Robert Walker. Always kind and generous as an individual he gave generously of his time and effort to matters of public service and thereby not only manifested his own character, but worthily represented a corporation that is held in high regard for its consideration of local community interests.

As is usual in such cases, the number of Robert Walker's personal friends were greater than even he himself might have supposed. His departure is a community loss, and all the people share in the sorrow of this occasion.

Obituary in The Rifle Telegram June 9, 1932 - IMPRESSIVE SERVICES FOR WALKER SUNDAY.
Funeral services for Robert W. Walker, manager of the local telephone exchange, who was drowned in the Colorado river on May 30, were held at the Sayre funeral home Sunday afternoon. Rev. O B. Duckworth was in charge and he based his well-chosen words of comfort on the thought derived from Edgar A Guest's, "What I Call Living" and "If This Were All" and James Whitcomb Riley's marvelous poem "The Onward Trail".

A male quartet from Clifton composed of Leslie Hall, Earl Hart, O. G. Brown and Bob Burkhalter sang "Mother Machree" and "City of God" and "Just Beyond".

Pallbearers were Jack Munro, Miles Barrett, Fred Dunham, Hubert Burch, Ed Webb, Bert Taylor, E P. Brown and Luther Watt and interment was made in Rosehill cemetery.

Robert Walton Walker, age 46 years, 5 months and 22 days, was born in Nathrope, Colo., on September 22, 1885. He was the oldest son in a family of seven children and from the time of the death of his father, Thomas Carol Walker, in September 1900, he was the sole support of his mother and the other children. His mother, Mrs. Mary Hawkins Walker, died in July, 1913.
At an early age Mr. Walker moved to Leadville, Colo., where he was engaged in various mining activities until 1907, after which he was an electrical worker until 1911. In that year he moved to Mesa. Colo., where he was married on February 4, 1913, to Miss Mabel Gilbreath. Since June, 1918, he has been employed by the 9 Mountain States Telephone company, and by performing his duties faithfully and well was rapidly promoted to the position of manager.

He was very active in this community, being one of the most enthusiastic members of the chamber of commerce, a member of the Apple Pie day committee for a number of years, and one of the organizers of the Rifle Relief association. Rifle has indeed lost one who has devoted much time and thought to the welfare of this community, and a friend to everyone and the profusion of floral offerings manifested the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors as well as by the company in whose employ he met his death two weeks ago Friday while trying to remove the wires from a telephone pole in the center of the river near Antlers. His wife, as well as many friends saw the boat overturn in which he and his helper, Joe Secord, were riding and the two men thrown into the swollen river. Walker was unable to swim, and it was only a few minutes until he was swept downward with the current and seen no more of until 11 days later when his body was found by Bert Evans on a little island three miles below Rulison.

Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Mabel; two sons, Robert Lee, 18 and Merle Elroy, 13; a sister, Mrs. Frank Heely of Wilmington, Cal; and a brother, Gavin L Walker of Portland, Oregon.2

Burial*He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Sec. N 1/2S 1/2, Lot 22, Block 12, Rifle, Chaffee County, Colorado, U.S.A.. Plot D-12-2202. There is no marker.2,8
