Obituary (Summerside Journal): "Sudden Death of Mr. H. R. Crockett
Citizens of Summerside were profoundly shocked to learn of the very sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Herbert R. Crockett, the well-known jeweller, and one of the leading business-men of the town. Mr. Crockett left his home on Beaver Street about the usual time this morning and immediately after entering his store on Water Street put his hands up to his head with the words AOh, my head!, and fell prostrate to the floor. Dr. Simpson, the nearest physician, was summoned and arrived almost immediately. Mr. Crockett was however beyond medical assistance, death being almost instantaneous.
The sad event is deeply deplored as Mr. Crockett was a man of singularly fine disposition, honourable to the highest degree in all his dealings with his fellow men, and esteemed by all. He was about sixty years of age. He had been a sufferer for some years with stomach trouble, but latterly it is understood this condition had improved. Some time ago however symptoms of high blood pressure developed and it is supposed that this was the cause of his death, the long walk from his home through the exceptionally heavy snow this morning bringing on the attack, Mr. Crockett in passing a citizen on his way down having remarked that he found the walking very hard.
To his family in their hour of sudden bereavement the deepest sympathy is extended. The deceased was twice married, his first wife being the daughter of the late Thomas P. Huestis. By this union he had four sons, Roy, of Souris; Stanley, Inspector of the Bank of Nova Scotia; and Harold R., associated himself with the jewellery business in Summerside; one son Carl, now in Syracuse, NY, by his present wife, formerly Miss Maud Arbing, daughter of the late John Arbing, of Summerside. An adopted daughter, Ethel, will also sorely miss him. There are four brothers, Frank in Portland, Me; Walter in Western Canada; Lemuel in Little York, P.E.I; and another brother in some part of the United States; also two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Lewis, Little York; and Mrs. Silas Prowse, Charlottetown Royalty. Mr. Crockett was a native of Little York and conducted a successful jewellery business in Summerside for many years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and will be sincerely mourned by members of that fraternity." Obituary (Pioneer): "The funeral of the late respected Mr. Herbert R. Crockett took place from his residence at Summerside on Thursday afternoon. It was one of the most largely attended seen here for many years. The Oddfellows, of which society the deceased was a most highly honored member, under whose auspices the funeral was held, attended in a body. After a short service at the home, service was held at the United Church, Rev. M. C. McDonald officiating, assisted Rev. J. C. Martin, Rev. Mr. Harding and Rev. Dr. Scott. The Oddfellows impressive funeral service was conducted by Nobel Grand McCallum and Chaplain McKay. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, testifying to the great esteem in which the late Mr. Crockett was held. The pallbearers were Messrs. F. J. E. Wright, J. E. Gallant, W. A. Stewart, H. T. Begg, L. R. Allen and Capt. J. S. Allen."5,6,2 |
