He served with the U.S. Navy during World War I and World War II, as well as the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Katahdin Lodge of Masons; St. Aldemar Commandery; Anah Temple Shine; and the Fidelity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen (Estabrook) Bates of Houlton; four brothers, Everard of Moro, Freeman and Adrian, both of Linneus, Philip of Niles, Michigan; one sister, Mrs. Helen Jane Mason, Riverside,California; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Dunn Funeral Home here, Friday at 2p.m. with the Rev. Gordon Buzza officiating. Friends may call at thefuneral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in New Limerick Cemetery.1

Biographical Note* The family lived in Savannah during the Civil War. She died August 28, 1944,at age 80, at Buffalo, Wyoming. She was buried by her husband in the family plot at the Hulett Cemetery. Belle taught school till she married. In the early days of the stage line from Spearfish, South Dakota to Miles City, Montana, the Riverdale Ranch was a stage stop. Belle's ancestor, Hamon Massey, was listed in the Domesday Book. Hamo de Masci came to England from Macey, La Mauche, Normandy at the time of William the Conqueror in 1066. He is listed in the Falaise Roll as a companion of William the Conqueror. His name was anglicized to Hamon Massey. He became Baron of Dunham Massey of Cheshire. Hamon Massey was one of the palatinate barons. A descendant, Peter Massey, patented land in New Kent County, Virginia in 1682. This account is found on page 223 in the book, 'Hulett Area Past And Present' Compiled, Published and Distributed by Hulett Area Senior Citizens, Inc. Printed by Sand Creek Printing, Belle Fourche, South Dakota. 1885-1985.

She then lived in Toronto from 1941 to 1946. She later moved to Prince Edward Island, where she met and married her second husband, James Oliver Clair Campbell.1
