Death* | Aleah Palmer died on 18 August 2012, in St. Mary's Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada![]() Obituary: LOMAS-ANDERSON, ALEAH (PALMER), 84, of Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, died peacefully Saturday, August 18th, 2012 at St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Born 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts to Ingham Wright Palmer and Aleah Maude (Henderson) Palmer, Aleah grew up in Summerside and Charlottetown, PEI. She graduated in 1945 from Summerside High School, and continued her education at the University of King’s College in Halifax, where she earned a BA in History and Political Science and met her future husband, fellow History student, Alton A. (Al) Lomas (1927-2000). While Al finished his MA, Aleah worked in the accounts office with Canada Packers in Halifax. Aleah and Al were married in Charlottetown, PEI in 1949, and lived in Halifax and Windsor NS until 1954, when Al’s career in the Canadian Diplomatic Service began. Aleah became the consummate diplomatic wife, proudly representing Canada in Detroit, Mexico, Brussels, and New York City. Returning to Ottawa in 1966, she became fully engaged in her lifelong devotion to civic and community affairs, which she continued when Al returned to Halifax in 1973. When, in 1979, Al was posted to Beijing, PRC as Minister (Economic/Commercial) in the Canadian Embassy, Aleah gracefully resumed her role as a diplomatic wife and partner. Al retired to Sherbrooke in 1983. Thereafter Aleah worked as Librarian and Storytime leader at the Sherbrooke Library until her own retirement. Al and Aleah celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999. After Al died in 2000, Aleah married Murray Anderson of Sherbrooke in February of 2005, and lived happily in Nova Scotia for the remainder of her life. Aleah served her community as past Chair of the Sherbrooke Village Commission, a Director of the St. Mary’s River Association, a staunch supporter (Secretary and President) of the St. Mary’s Liberal Association, member of Heritage Canada, Heritage Nova Scotia and the St. Mary’s Historical Society, for which she was recognized in 2004 with the Sir John Coape Sherbrooke Heritage Award. Over the years she served as member and Past Secretary of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 56, Sherbrooke), Vice-Chair of the Heritage Goldenville Society, People’s Warden of St. James’ Anglican Church, and Guysborough District Director of the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia. Her stories were regularly heard across the province in her role as the long time Party Liner and Community Contact for CBC Nova Scotia’s Information Morning. Aleah was a fiercely proud Canadian dedicated to community and honored to help represent Canada at home and abroad. Her devotion to education, literacy and the preservation of Canadian history and heritage were unparalleled, and our community is much the poorer for her loss. Aleah is now survived by her loving husband, A. Murray Anderson, Sherbrooke; her son Alton A. Death* | He died on 17 February 1957, at age 57, at home, 323 Poplar St., Summerside, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada![]() Obituary: "By the death of Mr. Allan Walker Palmer at his home, 323 Poplar Avenue, Summerside, in the early hours of Sunday morning, February 17th, after an illness of seven years, this town has lost a citizen who was known to many for his genius, ambition and enterprise, as well as for his affable disposition. Mr. Palmer was born at Freeland, Lot Eleven, in 1899, a son of Jonathan David Palmer and Mrs. Palmer, the former Mary Eliza Walker, both of whom passed away some years ago. The late Allan W. Palmer is survived by his wife, who was the former Miss Helen Bell, of Alberton, formerly a school teacher, and two children, John Robert in Ottawa, and Mary Elizabeth, Montreal; also by three brothers, Robert Harold, in Freeland, Edgar Poole, Weston, Mass., and Ingham Wright Palmer in Moncton, to all of whom sincere sympathy will be extended. Years ago Allan Palmer showed an interest and aptitude in the field of electrical mechanics, as was evidenced by the fact that he was one of the first in this province to build a radio receiving set, and erected a private telephone between his home and the store operated by the family, after the death, in 1910, of his father. After starting out in business for himself, he moved to Tyne Valley, where for several years he operated a garage, and later went to Dunk River to operate the hydro-electric plant. While there he became ill and after his recovery he decided to come to Summerside to take up the plumbing business, operating same at first from his home and in l941 moved to Water St., where the firm of Palmer and Williams was subsequently inaugurated. With the outbreak of the Second World War the firm received contracts for installing plumbing and wiring at the Summerside and Mount Pleasant airports. They later, under contract, built a number of harbor duty boats for the Department of National Defence. Mr. Palmer afterwards personally branched out into real estate building ventures. These included the erection of two apartments on Kirk Street, the transforming of the dwelling on the Lefurgey property which he bought, into an apartment, and the building of two exceptionally large apartment houses, one on Upper Central Street in Summerside, and the spacious and well-known Palmer Apartment in the Brighton section of Charlottetown. The deceased belonged to the Masonic Order, being a member of Alexandra Lodge, of Port Hill. The funeral takes place tomorrow, Tuesday; a private service at the home at 2 p.m., being followed by the Burial Service at St. Mary's Anglican Church at 2:30, and interment in the Peoples Cemetery."5,12,9 |
