We, (John Jay and Nancy Dorian Ruhlman)have wonderful notes from her diary filed in the year just before she wasmarried to Charles A. Hammond in 1908. Charles was a young widower with four children. She lived for many years in the farmhouse in Lindley, Steuben County, NewYork while she raised her family. In later years she lived at 22 ElmStreet in Corning, Steuben County, New York. She was a member of the Erwin Valley Christian and Missionary Church inCorning. She died January 21, 1982 at the Founder’s Pavilion in Corning,Steuben County, Pennsylvania and was buried in Osceola, Tioga County,Pennsylvania. Once, on Sept. 20, 1973 she wrote (probably when some of her daughterswere not getting along as well as they could have): 'I think I have oneof the best families that ever was - I’m sure you all love one anotherand my prayer is - that- We all meet at the Heavenly Throne with Our Lordand Savior! This is my Deep Loving Desire!!! Your Most Devoted Mother.' |

Biographical Note* | William Tubbs: The earliest record of this family is of William Tubbs, who first appeared in Plymouth, Mass., in 1635, and is believed to have come to America from Sutton, Isle of Ely, Cambridge, England. He was one of the volunteers in the expedition against the Pequot Indians in June,1637; was admitted freeman of Plymouth Colony, January 2, 1637-1638; was granted lands in Duxbury at different times; was one of the proprietors of Bridgewater; was surveyor of highways at Duxbuy 1678-1685; and served as a member of Captain Miles Standish's military company. William divorced Mercy on July 9 1668 apparently for reasons of adultery. Mercy moved to Rhode Island with her lover. |
