Anecdote* | The father-son relationship between James Walker (c1732-1816), his wife Sarah Hill (c1731-1814), and David Walker (1762-1844) is a proposal based on the age difference of 30 years, close proximity of their farms in Priestside, and that James & David each paid a horse tax three days apart. The evidence is circumstantial, but compelling. James Walker and Sarah Hill are buried with his parents, John Walker (c1704-1739) and Mary Johnston (c1706-1771), in the Dalton Village Graveyard, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.3,4 |
Anecdote | There is a story about the origin of the surname Walker. "Wa(u)lking the Cloth", extracted from a Scottish list: 'Walker' means 'Walker of the Cloth'. This was a transitional process from liquid to cloth, and workers walked it in their bare feet to stretch it. In the Highlands 'waulking' the tweed is a process of shrinking the cloth. A group (usually women) would sit around a wooden table and the long length of damp tweed was held by them all. It was passed through their hands, and bumped down on the table as it was passed along. There were traditional songs sung to maintain the rhythm of the waulking.5 |

Death* | He died on 16 March 1914 at home, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada![]() There is a story told by the late Helen (Walker) Cairns about the death of David Walker. He and his daughter Etta were on their way to Kensington with horse and buggy to pick up a dress that had been ordered from the dress maker for Etta. The horse became spooked by a passing train, causing David to be thrown from the buggy. He died of his injuries. Sometime later Etta returned to the dress shop in Kensington to pick up her suit. She took it home in its box, and stored it in the attic. Etta never wore that dress. This was in the house built by John Walker and Jane Weir, and has been lived in by their descendants to this day (2020). Obituary from the Summerside Journal: "David Walker, an old and highly esteemed resident of New Annan, was so badly injured in a runaway accident near Kensington on Monday afternoon that he died from his injuries a few hours later. It seems that Mr. Walker and his daughter left home early in the afternoon to drive to Kensington, and when about half a mile from the town their horse, a spirited animal, took fright at the train and started to run. The sleigh was upset and both the occupants were thrown out. Mr. Walker held on to the reins and was dragged by the frenzied animal about 100 yards when a post was collided with. Mr. Walker, it was seen, was badly injured, and upon his return to New Annan a doctor was summoned. An examination of the injured man disclosed bad bruises about the body and a great cut on one of the legs near the knee. He also suffered severely from shock. The doctor did not hold out much hope, and a few hours later the unfortunate man passed away. Mr. Walker was a highly esteemed resident of New Annan and the news of his death under such distressing circumstances will be received with the deepest sympathy. His funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Walker was 88 years of age. A widow, two sons and a daughter are among those who mourn". Obituary from the Pioneer, 11 April 1914, p. 5, col. 7: "An Appreciation of the Late Mr. David Walker "In the midst of life we are in death. This was vividly brought to mind in the sudden and tragic death of the late David Walker. Shocked was the community on hearing that he had met with a fatal accident. The writer had the pleasure of a long and intimate acquaintance with the deceased, both as a member of the community and member of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was a much respected Elder, and in this he was following the footsteps of his father, who for many years filled the eldership in the same church." "Mr. Walker was noticeable unassuming, yet very deliberate in arriving at conclusions and loyal to his convictions. Every movement for the betterment of the community found in him a warm and zealous friend. Though living quietly in his comfortable home, yet he was no small factor in moulding the sentiments of the community. It may truly be said of him that he was "one of Nature's Noblemen." At the meeting of session he never forced his opinions on the meeting, but his advice and council was always sought after. He was amiable and courteous in all his dealings with his fellows and the place he held in the community was evidenced by the very large concourse of people assembled from far and near to pay their last tribute of respect in connection with his funeral, when all that remained was laid away in the People's Cemetery, Summerside. He married Miss Debra Lowther, daughter of the late David, North Carleton, and their family consisted of three sons and a daughter. The eldest son predeceased him, the second son, Harry, settled on a good homestead in the vicinity, and the youngest son, David, is on the homestead, and also the daughter, Miss Etta." "The Walker connection fills so large a place in the community I venture to notice some facts in that connection. The grandfather of the deceased (David Walker) came to the province from Dumfriesshire, Scotland in the early years of the last century and started to hew out for himself and family a house and named it New Annan, after the place of his boyhood in the Old Land. His house was on the farm now owned by Percy Marchbank." "His family consisted of 4 sons and 7 daughters. Three sons, John, Robt., and David, were settled on farms adjoining the road leading from Travellers Rest to Kensington. James settled in New Dumfries. They were all blessed with large families. John Walker of Freetown belonged to the family of James; Henry Walker of Summerside to the family of David, Mrs. Cameron of Summerside to the family of Robert, and the late David Walker to the family of John. There is also a sister, Mrs. Eliza Schurman, living in the neighborhood of Summerside, aged 93 years." "The daughters married ancestors of some of the leading families in the vicinity. Ann was the mother in the house of the Jamieson family. Our esteemed friend Robt. Jamieson of Summerside being one of her sons. Mary was the mother in the house of the Marchbank family. Sarah was the mother in the house of the Glover family. Margaret was the mother in the house of the MacKay family. Susan and Ellen, of whom I have no further knowledge than that they married respectively Messrs. McLain and Gunning. Thus from this early pioneer descended a large connection which contributed largely to the wealth of our province, materially, socially, intellectually and morally." Obituary from The Guardian, 18 March 1914, page 1, col. 4: "Fatal Accident at Kensington A very sad accident occurred near Kensington Station Monday evening when Mr. David Walker, an aged citizen of New Annan, was driving into Kensington. Mr. Walker, who was a lover of horseflesh and an experienced driver, waited until the train going east had passed on its way before proceeding along that perilous piece of road which runs parallel with the railway line just outside Kensington, but had apparently not noticed or known that a second train, which was the one delayed at Miscouche, was coming, and his horse, a spirited beast, as far as can be learned, bolted, throwing Mr. Walker against a post, severely cutting his leg and bruising his side." "The accident was viewed by many on the train at Kensington, but no one knew of its seriousness until Charlottetown was reached. When the runaway was noticed help was quickly given and the spirited horse caught, but not before the aged gentleman had been thrown to the ground where he was found and tenderly cared for. Medical aid was given by Dr. Alex McNeill of Summerside, and the injured man was taken to his home in New Annan, but the shock proved too severe and his spirit passed away during the evening." "The deceased gentleman, who was 82 years of age, was very active for his years and enjoyed good health. He was highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends, and his sudden and sad demise after his long and useful life came as a severe shock to all." "Besides his grief stricken wife he leaves to mourn the loss of a devoted father three children; Harry, David, and Etta, all settled around him, and the following brothers and sisters, all of whom have reached an advanced age, viz: - Mrs. Elijah Schurman of Miscouche who last Sunday celebrated her 92nd birthday; Mrs. (Rev.) Hugh Brown, Shusham, N.Y., 86 years of age; Thomas J. of Kensington, aged about 76, and a younger brother, William, now in Vancouver." "To the bereaved ones is extended the sincerest sympathy of all. Mrs. George Brown of Margate and Mr. Wm. J. Walker, niece and nephew of the deceased, who were in Charlottetown when the accident occurred, have gone home to attend the funeral which takes place today, Wednesday, at one o'clock to the People's Cemetery at Summerside."1,3,12,13 |

His Excellency went by the way of Tryon and Bedeque, lunched at the residence of John Marshal, Esq., DeSable, inspected the improvements in progress on his model Farm, and his valuable importation of Live Stock from England; drove through the beautiful settlements of DeSable, Crapaud, Tryon and Seven Mile Bay, to the residence of Joseph Pope, Esq. at Bedeque, where, in the absence of Mr. Pope, he was hospitably entertained by his son, Mr. James Pope. The deceased had been in failing health the greater part of the winter but as the beautiful spring weather came he seemed to be improving. About a month ago he went to spend a few days with his daughter, Mrs. Henry Bynon, Mill Valley, about a mile from home and while there he took a turn for the worse and all the loving care of kind friends and skilled medical attendants could do for him was of no avail, and on the evening of July 24th, his spirit winged its flight to him who gave it. There are left to mourn one son, John W. at home, one daughter Lucy, Mrs. Henry Bynon, Mill Valley, one daughter Jennie having died ten years ago, two brothers John of Freetown and William of Kensington, and one sister, Miss Sarah of Kelvin, also eight grandchildren."9,2 |
