The earliest records of the Titus family date back to a Silas (Silius) Tito who was born in England in 1570 and died there on Nov. 24, 1637. John Alva Titus, in his book "Saga of Two North American Families: Andrews Titus," reports that Silius (or Silas) claimed to have been descended from the Emperor Titus, who commanded the Roman forces at Jerusalem in 70 A.D. However, until more convincing evidence is uncovered, this claim must remain nothing more than an enchanting possibility.

Silius' son's name was also Silius. He was either born in Huntingdonshire or settled there in the seventeenth century and evidently married 1st Jane Newdyke who died around 1621. It is generally assumed, although not proven, that the Robert Titus who emigrated to America with his wife and two sons, was a child of this first marriage. Silas married 2nd Constantia Colly (Cally?), who died in 1667 and was buried at Bushey.

Silius (Silas) and Constantia produced two sons; Silas, who was born around 1622 and was prominent under Kings Charles I and II; and Stephen, who died in 1671 without a family. As mentioned above, the third son, Robert, who emigrated to America, and who is the ancestor of the lineage outlined below, was evidently the son of Silas and his first wife, Jane Newdyke. According to New York Colonial manuscripts, SilasTitus was appointed to a Council for Foreign Plantations at 500 pounds per year by King Charles II by Royal Commission on Jul. 30, 1670. It would be interesting to know if there was any communication between Silas and his elder half-brother, Robert in the New World in following years. There is no evidence supporting a continuation of this Titus line in Great Britain.

As it has turned out, it has become possible to trace practically all of the Titus family originating from the above line in England. Of the three sons sired by Silius Titus, only one, Robert, had descendants who carried on the Titus name. He emigrated to what is now the United States with his wife and two children, John and Edmond, in 1635. Three other sons, Samuel, Abiel and Content were subsequently born in the New World. Some sources mention a daughter, Susannah. There is a reference in the will of Hannah, Robert's wife. The writing is unclear, but could read "To my draughter Susannah...." In other words, the drafter of her will. There is, however, a marriage record of a Susanna Titus to a Robert Jones as his third wife. He d. Nov. 17, 1691 and there is no record of children by Susanna.

My motivation for research into the Titus family stemmed initially from the fact that my mother, Vera (nee Titus), was part of the lineage. However, once I became more involved in the research, and the various historical, political and social elements began to unfold over the 350-plus years of living history covered in my search, I became more and more fascinated, more and more involved with the numerous and varied cast of characters.

These people, my relatives and my ancestors, are, and were, simple, hard-working and God-fearing folk. They are mainly farmers and fishermen, with a sprinkling of shopkeepers, school teachers and clergymen. They have remained in that humble social status for much of the 350 years that they have contributed to and woven the fabric of North America. Only in the past 70 or 80 years do we find significant representation in the sciences, the arts or the senior ranks of the military. In religion, they are mostly Protestants, with the Baptist, Quaker and Methodist Churches being their preferred houses of worship.

Genealogical research is really detective work; a fascinating exercise in solving mystery after mystery, each answered question raising several more, producing moods in the researcher alternating between elation and frustration. As the data is collected, sorted and analysed, and as pieces of the framework fall into place, a mosaic of historical and social evolution gradually emerges and imposes itself over the entire work. In my case, not only did I gain an appreciation of the ebb and flow of history over that immense time-frame, but I began to realize that I might be the only means by which many of those people might achieve some measure of future recognition. With that realization comes a certain sense of awe and responsibility.

The written word can be a powerful and lasting force, whereas gravestones tend to be transitory, and surrender to the elements, and to the ravages of time and acid rain, only slightly more slowly than the bones that lie beneath them. Thus, once the living memory fades and passes on so do the names, deeds and accomplishments of all those wonderful people. That is, unless someone takes the trouble to research, coordinate and record their stories.

Genealogical research is also a game that anyone is welcome to join. After all, most anyone has information about his or her immediate family that can become instrumental in untangling parts of one puzzle or another. Readers are therefore invited to join the search to uncover as much as possible of the story of the Titus family in North America, or, for that matter, the picture of whatever other particular family to which they may belong. Many have done just that, and have thus contributed greatly to the telling of the story.

As mentioned above, the Tituses, generally speaking, were not particularly widely known outside the relatively narrow range of their contemporary societies and environments; in other words, they were not the headline-makers of their day, not generally to be found on the society pages or on the police blotters of their neighbourhoods. Their hopes for immortality, or even for remembrance, generally rested in the fervent Protestant belief in resurrection after death. I am therefore listing below the names of those whom I have been able to identify in the hope that in some small way this chronicle will help their names to endure in this world. For, after all, by following their religious beliefs they have done all they could possibly do to ensure their eternal recognition in the next. Certainly, they will not die while we remember them.

The outline below is arranged chronologically by generation, the number preceding each name in the listing indicating the number of the generation in North America of that particular person and the descendancy from previous generations. It will become obvious to the reader that this framework of the Titus family requires much further research. For instance, the New Brunswick portion has not yet been integrated into the larger picture (if, in fact, it belongs to the same lineage). In addition, much of the remainder has not yet been brought up to the present date. There are also many gaps yet to be filled in, especially in lineages on the distaff side. There are also, most probably, many inaccuracies; some of my making, and others carried down from previous research. Future researchers should take this condition in stride; by searching out original sources, then correcting, adding and deleting where necessary and continuing on with the work. The ultimate goal should be to accurately complete the story.

My hope is that this format will allow the researcher to easily insert applicable additions into the framework as they are uncovered. At the same time, I am sure that I have left open sufficient avenues of research and enough unanswered questions to provide years of enjoyment for many future genealogical enthusiasts.

It should be noted that this guide is intended to serve only as a framework upon which family history records may be built. Consequently, it contains very little anecdotal material. It is hoped that subsequent family members who are interested in their portions of the family history will flesh out the areas of this guide pertaining to their immediate families with appropriate photographs, news items, stories and other artifacts that will serve to expand and thus breathe some life into this otherwise sterile outline. Here below are my relatives, the members of the Titus family.
