He left a widow and twelve children to mourn their loss, besides 75 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren. He emigrated from Dumfriesshire, Scotland to this Island in 1822. He was a pioneer settler in New Annan, when it was an unimproved forest wilderness. By a strong constitution, industry, perseverance, sobriety, and above all, the Blessing of God. On his efforts, he succeeded in amassing quite a large amount of property, his hospitable house of full and plenty, was always a refuge for the poor and needy, and especially a welcoming home to the ministers of the gospel. He was for a great many years an Elder, and by long acquaintance and association, was endeared for his true, honest, unassuming piety, earnestness, cheerfulness, good judgment, and other natural abilities. He was a favourite of his minister, the late Rev. R.S. Patterson, whom he generally accompanied in his pastoral visits. He was a loving husband, and affectionate father, good neighbour. During his last illness, he had a pious advice for everybody who approached his dying bedside, and his death was most happy and triumphant."
