Ammi taught membership classes, with his wife's father, Ananiah Bohanon, at the Brooklyn Center Methodist Church. The land for this church had been donated by Hiram Coffin Bohanon and Mary Gray. Also in the household was a Joseph Oxley (age 15), recorded as a servant. Alexander, his father John and brother William were all listed as farmers. For unknown reason, the origin column for Alexander and his father had 'Dutch' recorded. They were certainly not of Dutch origin.²

Celia Ann Dotten was enumerated on the census of 1871 in the household of Alexander Dotten in Wallace, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia; included in the household with Alexander (age 37) were his wife Lucy (age 32), daughter Celia (age 3), son William (age 1), widowed father John Dotten (age 83), sister Abigail (age 45) and brother William (age 43). Also in the household was a Joseph Oxley (age 15), recorded as a servant. Alexander, his father John and brother William were all listed as farmers. For unknown reason, the origin column for Alexander and his father had 'Dutch' recorded. They were certainly not of Dutch origin.³

Occupations for Avard and Robert were entered as "not given", however, total earnings for Avard were $190 and $800 for Robert, "working on own account". The family religion was Presbyterian.⁶
