"The five lanes were the roads that went to Charlottetown, New London, Princetown, St. Eleanors and the settlements of the French River area" (The Wright of Bedeque, Vol. 1, page 208). Five Lanes End later became known as Barrett's Cross when Mrs. Barrett opened an inn and tavern there. In 1851 William became the post master when the Barrett's Cross post office opened in William's house. In 1886, the name Barrett's Cross was changed to Kensington. Kensington was incorparted in 1914.3,4,5 |

Emigrated from Dumfriesshire, Scotland to P.E.I. in 1817 with his wife and year-old son, and settled at Five Lane's End, also known as Glover's Cross, Lot 19. He was a resident of Kensington for 58 years. He was the first Post Master of Glover's Cross (known as Barrett's Cross after 1824) when it commenced operation in his house in 1851. Although the settlement was renamed Kensington after 1862, the Post Office was called Barrett's Cross until 1886 at which time it was known as Kensington. After 1851 mail and travellers came west from Charlottetown by stagecoach and William Glover operated a Coach House at which stage drivers stopped to rest while en route to St. Eleanor's, Lot 17 via the Main Post Road. The Kensington Post Office remained in the Glover home until 1927. William Glover was also appointed wool collector for Hope Mill Woolen Establishment at Eight Mile Stream, now Hunter River, Lot 23.
