He farmed in Walhalla, North Dakota for some years, then worked in lumberyards the rest of his life. At the time of his death he was a log scaler for the Columbia Bureau, associated with the Forest Service. He and Eulala lived in and around Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. She trained as a teacher at Valley City, North Dakota, normal school.¹
