Clayton Wallace Goodwin1
M, #91677, b. 25 January 1899, d. 3 August 1981
Note* | Clayton was born in Stephens Minnesota where his dad was a station agent. Stephens at that time was the end of the line. A stage coach linked Stephens to Greenbush Mn. He took his schooling at Kulm ND where he went to live with his uncle Lote Viets. Clay first went to work for AT&T in Fargo ND.At and T went out on strike and Clay hearing of a eight hour day plus better benefits went to Canada. AT and T were impressed with his excellent telegraphic skills would have liked to keep him.(Ross's comment) Clayton came to Canada in 1918 where he went to work for the Canadian National Railroad in Atikokan. It was there that he met his future wife, Pearl Code. They were married in 1921 and they moved to Huron about 40 miles from Thunder Bay as a telegrapher. He was a active member of the Kiwanis Club and was a per annual chairman of the Easter Seals campaign, personally sending out hundreds of letters in that endeavor. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. According to his diary notes, he took responsibility for a missed train order almost causing a train wreck. Ross knew of the incident and reported that Clay was covering up for George Code( his brother inlaw) who was just starting out as a telegrapher. In any event the dispatcher also missed it. No apparent punishment was issued. They moved, together with their 3 children, to Ethelbert Manitoba in1927. Warren was born in Ethelbert. Ross tells of Clay and Pearl who were scheduled to catch a train out of Warroad during the 1920's. They started from Badger in lots of time but unfortunately the car, a Ford Model T, had 3 flats on the way. They just made it. In leaving Clay told Ross to drive the car into a ditch,It returned to Badger without a hitch. The family lived in Ethelbert for 15 years when the lure of greater earnings during the war years moved them to Gypsumville Manitoba. The lure was large scale whitefish that was shipped from Lake Winnipeg to markets in the big cities. After three years they moved to Atikokan, Ontario where dad worked as Supervisory agent until his retirement in the early sixties. His number in the CNR seniority list was 1917 SDORT #518. Ross related a story about Clayton and the Greek Orthodox priest. The priest came to pick up a large bottle of wine from the station. They got into a discussion about religion.Eventually to cool down the talk they started to sip at the bottle. Ross reported that he later saw them, still discussing religion walking arm in arm down the road. Clay was a Justice of the Peace for many years in Ethelbert. He was a member of the Kiwanis club in Atikokan where he was head of the Easter Seals campaign. He skied and fished and read books for recreation. He didn't like politics. He had two cars in his lifetime, a Chevrolet (1928) which he had all kinds of problems with so he traded it for a 1929 Plymouth. He kept that car for at least 10 years. We made many trips to Dauphin Man. and visited with Ed and Jenny McClean (Pearl's sister) Clay was a cigarette smoker and that developed into emphysema. This was diagnosed in the late 60's complications of which lead to his death in 1981.1 |
