Biographical Note*

Fred attended public school at Kensington and graduated from grade 10. Shortly afterward he obtained a position with a local banking firm. After persuasion by his brother Ingham and others, he decided to resume his education at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown in 1929. He received his second year diploma in the spring of 1931. He then entered Dalhousie medical school in fall of 1931. Later, he transferred his studies to McGill University in Montréal from where he graduated in 1938. Dr. Fred began his medical practice in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1938. A year later he moved to practice at a hospital in St. John's, Newfoundland. In 1941 he moved to western Canada to practice at Weyburn hospital in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.¹

Dr. Frederick Ralph Jardine was baptized on 19 September 1910 in the Presbyterian Church, Kensington, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, 46.43875,-63.63837; the officiating clergyman was Rev. A.D. Stirling.²

Death*

He died on 11 September 1942 in St. Joseph's Hospital, Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, 49.150729,-103.010165, at age 33; The day after his marriage Dr. Jardine took suddenly ill and was rushed to Estevan hospital. His wife, a registered nurse, remained at his bedside during his illness. Drs. Creighton and Inglis performed an operation for appendicitis. Complications developed during the operation and Drs. Campbell, MacDonald and Nelson of Weyburn were called for consultation. He died of what was later diagnosed as pancreatism, an incurable disease at the time. His uncle, Dr. John Jardine of Scott, Saskatchewan, was in contact with the doctors supervising and was preparing to journey to Estevan when the fatal news was received. His body was fittingly returned to his native province for burial.¹

He was the son of Dr. Frederick William Jardine and Janet Ella Walker.¹

Occupation*

Ingham received his early education at Kensington and the entered Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. He received his second year certificate from this college on May 10, 1917, and after graduating he received a provisional first class teacher's license. From Aug. 1917 to June 30, 1918, Ingham taught school at St. Eleanors, P.E.I.. In the fall of 1918 he entered medical school at McGill University in Montreal. After graduating from McGill in the spring of 1923, Ingham took over his late father's practice at Kensington. Dr. Jardine continued in a full practice until he sustained an unfortunate injury in an accident at the opening of Milligan and Morrison racetrack at Northam, P.E.I. in 193?. He apparently fell into an open manhole and struck his head on a cement slab. The injury was severe and for about one week afterward all traffic near his home had to be stopped as the noise bothered him so greatly. Within a few months he resumed his professional career at Kensington in full capacity. He maintained his medical career until the early 1940's when he was forced to retire due to ill health.⁴

Janet Neil Jardine was born March 5, 1903 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Janet was a school teacher. She married August 5,1953, in Trenton, New Jersey, George W. Schock, who was a propane stove salesman. Janet died February 21,1963, Trenton, New Jersey. According to a letter written to her cousin, Adelaide Barbour , it appears that Janet died of cancer (dated December 19,1962). She taught school at Margate, Prince Edward Island, in 1923 after graduating from Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She also attended Mt. Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, and McGill University (1938) in Montréal, Québec.¹
