Obituary (Summerside Journal): "Mr. Harry Walker, Well-Known Fox Rancher Instantly Killed by Accidental Discharge of a Shotgun

A shocking fatal accident occurred this morning at New Annan, as the result of which Mr. Harry Walker, well-known fox rancher of that place, was instantly killed by the discharge of a shot gun. Mr. Walker had been informed of the presence of a skunk in the ranch and taking a shot gun along he proceeded to see if he could despatch the marauder.
As he was about to pass through the door of the ranch he laid the shotgun against the wall, when it slipped and in its fall discharged the contents of the gun, lodging in Mr. Walker's head, killing him instantly.

Dr. Howatt of Summerside was summoned but nothing could be done. Dr. Howatt is coroner and in view of the evident circumstances of the case decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Members of the R.C.M.P. were also informed of the accident, which occurred about 10:30 a.m., and proceeded to the scene. The body was brought to Summerside and taken to Bowness' Undertaking Rooms. The time of the funeral has not yet been decided.

Mr. Walker was about 67 years of age, a man held in high esteem by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Jean Walker, who is employed in the crockery department of R. T. Holman Ltd., Summerside. Deceased also leaves one brother, Mr. David Walker of New Annan, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Carruthers, Summerside, to all of whom the profound sympathy of the community will be extended in their sudden bereavement."12,4,13,14

Obituary (Maple Leaf Magazine): "At Fenlac (sic), Saskatchewan, on Dec. 28, 1922, Ira D. Walker, formerly of Kelvin, P.E.I., in his 45 yr., leaving a widow (formerly Miss Bessie Whitehead, Clinton, P.E.I.), four children, a brother and three sisters".
Obituary (Agriculturist): "The death occurred on December 28th at his home in Fenlac (sic), Sask., of Ira D. Walker on his forty-fifth year, after an illness of nine days with that dread disease pneumonia; the deceased was a successful farmer in the Canadian West and was a son of the late David Walker of Kelvin and leaves to mourn besides his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, Kelvin; his wife formerly Miss Whitehead, of Clinton, and four young children Winnie, Roy, Alva and Carman; one brother J. C. Walker at Broadview, Sask., and three sisters Mrs. G. E. Ross, at Regina, Mrs. Herbert Hogg, at Kelvin and Mrs. Thomas Stewart, Kensington, to the bereaved ones sincere sympathy is extended."

Obituary (Summerside Journal):" At Senlac, Sask., on Dec. 28th, 1922 there passed away to his eternal reward in the person of Ira D. Walker in his 45th year one whom P.E.Island might well be proud of. The deceased was a son of the late David Walker of Kelvin Grove, where he lived on the homestead until about sixteen years ago.

"When not enjoying very good health he, in company with his wife, formerly Miss Bessie Whitehead of Clinton, and one small child decided to remove west, residing for a time in Broadview, Sask., removing later to Senlac where he first engaged in store-keeping, from which he retired, later to take up his old occupation of farming, in which he was still engaged when death claimed him. He was upright and honest in all his dealings with his fellowman and gained the respect and confidence of those who knew him. Besides being an extensive farmer he took a leading part in all that pertained to the welfare of the community. He was an active member of the Union Church of his town, for which he was unanimously chosen elder.

"Never of a robust constitution, but being endowed with an indomitable spirit, he strove on and succeeded in making for himself and family a comfortable home. And just when fortune seemed to be favoring him most he was stricken with pneumonia and died after a brief illness of only eight days. He leaves to mourn his wife and four children: Winnie, Roy, Alva and Carmen, also his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, still on the homestead at Kelvin; one brother, James C. Walker of Broadview, Sask; and three sisters: Mrs. W. G. Ross of Regina, Sask., Mrs. Herbert Hogg, Kelvin, and Mrs. Thomas Stewart, Kensington; a brother, Ewen, predeceased him last June."10,11,12

This date of immigration, as recorded in the 1920 US census, is unlikely, as he was a member of his parent's household at the time of the 1891 Canada Census in Prince Edward Island. He settled in what would become Arizona.8
(First) Marriage*He married first May Lauritzen, daughter of Jens Severance Lauritzen and Dorothea Hanan. James Archibald emigrated to the U.S.A., and met May Lauritzen in Leadville, Colorado. They married and settled in the Arizona territory that ultimately became a state.2,9
Census HeadHousehold*James Archibald Walker was head of the household in the census of 3 January 1920 in Warren, Cochise County, Arizona, U.S.A.. Enumerated in the household with James (age 49) were his wife May (age 45), daughter Janette/Jean (age 10) and son James (age 9). James Sr. was a machinist in a copper mine. The census return shows that James emigrated in 1889, and was naturalized in 1891.8
1920 US Census, Warren, Cochise County, Arizona. Household of James Archibald Walker, his wife May (Lauritzen), daughter Janette/Jean, and James Marvin.
Living*He was living in Colorado, U.S.A., in 1922.10
Marriage LicenseHe and Anna Aune obtained a marriage license on 28 December 1936 in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, U.S.A.; James declared that he was born in Maine (incorrect), and that he was a machinist.11
(Second) Marriage*James Archibald Walker married second Anna Aune, daughter of Peter Cornelius Aune and Mary Elizabeth Townsend.12
Census HeadHouseholdJames Walker was head of the household in the census of 2 April 1940 in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, U.S.A.. Enumerated in the household with James (age 71) were his second wife Anna (age 42), her children by her first marriage, Susan (age 19) and George (age 17). James was a stationary machinist, Susan a saleslady in a variety store, George a newspaper carrier. James declared that he was born in Maine, which is incorrect as he was actually born in Prince Edward Island, as were his parents.13
ResidenceLast*The former residence of James Archibald Walker was in 304 1st Ave., Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, U.S.A., on 25 July 1941.14
Death*He died on 25 July 1941, at age 72, at home, 304 1st Ave., Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, U.S.A.; cause of death was suicide, "cyanide poisoning, self administered". Time of death was recorded as 8:20A.M. His marital status was recorded as widowed. The informant for this Certificate of Death was his son, James Marvin Walker. His second wife Ann died from the same cause on the same day, at 5:30A.M., at the Yuma General Hospital. It appears that she took the fatal dose of cyanide, and was admitted to hospital where she died. Possibly depressed over her death, James went home and took a lethal dose of the same cyanide, to die less than three hours after his wife.
According to his death certificate, he was to be buried in the Yuma Cemetery.14
Burial*He was buried on 26 July 1941 in Desert Lawn Cemetery, Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, U.S.A..
