  1. Richard Drake of Esher, a Drake of Ashe and brother of Sir Bernard Drake, was called "cousin" in the will of Sir Francis Drake. He was born in 1535. By 1577 he was one of the Equerries of Queen Elizabeth. His wife’s mother was a lady of the bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth. By 1583 he held the manor of Esher in Surrey. He also acquired the manor and rectory of Walton-on-Thames. He was a friend of Sir Francis Drake, and some of his favor at court may have been in consideration of that connection. In 1590 he was granted the Stewardship of the Courts and Leets of the manor of Woking. Following the defeat of the Spanish Armada, he kept certain high ranking Spanish prisoners at Esher under "house arrest," including Don Pedro de Valdez. In September 1600 Richard Drake had the honor of entertaining Her Majesty the Queen, which as one writer on the Drakes noted, was not a casual occurrence!

He was the son of William Drake of Yardbury, Colyton, Esq. and Margaret Westover.4
Note*According to the Drake Family History, 'Thomas Drake, his father and mother being dead, followed his relative, John Drake of Taunton, Mass., and Windsor, Conn., to America about 1653-4. He was accompanied by his sisters Joane... and Elizabeth...' 'Thomas Drake soon settled in Weymouth, Mass., his name first appearing on the records of that town in a list of property owners in 1663, in which he is described as owning 'Lot 70 containing six acres in 1st Division begininge on Brauntry lyne' and eighteen acres, Lot 33 in 2d Division. Prior to that, the latest list of land owners noted was that of November 26, 1651, in which his name does not appear; hence he settled in Weymouth after 1651, and before 1663. The frequency with which his name appears on the land deeds and war records of the times shows that Thomas Drake took an active part in the affairs of the town. His name occurs as witness on deeds December 15, 1664, and three years later he was a member of the Suffolk Troopers. He took an active part in King Philip's war, and June 24, 1676, was a member of the garrison at Punckapouge where he saw at least two months' service.' 'Plymouth Colony Deeds record large purchases of land by him on July 29, 1682, near the Taunton River in Freetown, half of which land he sold June 12, 1688, to Ralph Paine of Rhode Island. He died in Weymouth 1691, and his estate settled in 1692 was valued at 237 pounds, 2 pence, 2 shillings, a considerable sum at that time.' in 1653/54.2,7
