Founder of Holy Trinity Church, Dunfermline, and several monasteries, she was a devout supporter of the Church and had considerable influence for good on the Scottish court. Patron of Scotland. Birth* | Saint Margaret Queen of Scotland was born in 1046 in (probably) Castle Reka, Mecseknadas, Hungary; Granddaughter of King Edmund Ironside of England. Great-niece of Saint Stephen of Hungary. Born in Hungary while her family was in exile due to the Danish invasion of England, she still spent much of her youth in the British Isles. While fleeing the invading army of William the Conqueror in 1066, her family's ship wrecked on the Scottish coast. They were assisted by King Malcolm III Canmore of Scotland, whom Margaret married in 1070. Queen of Scotland. They had eight children, one of whom as Saint Maud, wife of Henry I. At the time of their marriage, Henry VI was King of England and also claimed the Kingdom of France, and controlled various parts of northern France. Margaret's uncle. Charles VII, also claimed the French throne, and agreed to the marriage of his niece to Henry on the condition that he would not be obligated to provide the customary dowry. Biographical Note* | Margaret led the Lancastrian faction in the Wars of the Roses. Henry's lack of mental stability often made him a weak king, and Margaret often ruled the kingdom in his place. It was she, who in May 1455, called for a Great Council, excluding the Yorkist faction, thus providing the impetus that began the civil conflict that lasted for over thirty years. The old nobility was decimated, and thousands of men died, during this period.1 |
