Nicholas Rideout1
M, #58601, b. circa 1797
Note* | Nicholas Rideout, born at Maugerville, N.B., about 1797. It seems almostcertain (comment by George H. Hayward) other were other children bornbetween Thomas, b. c1790, and Nicholas, b. c1797, but if there wereGeorge has no record of them. The York County marriage records show thatNicholas Rideout and Hannah Ginson, both of Wakefield, were married 03Nov 1821, by F. Dibblee, in the presence of Thomas Rideout and LewisDibblee. This, of course, would be 'old Wakefield', which then was inthe County of York and included all the lands along both sides of theSaint John River from Woodstock north to about where Bath is nowlocated. Nicholas and Hannah (Ginson) Rideout are shown in both the 1851and 1861 Census records, living in what is now the Parish of Brighton, inCarleton County. They apparently had no children. |
Birth* | Nicholas Rideout was born circa 1797 in Maugerville, Sunbury County, New Brunswick, Canada.1 |

Nicholas Rideout Jr.1
M, #58596, b. circa 1763, d. circa 1833
Note* | Nicholas Rideout was a brother to Oliver Rideout, and was probably the eldest child born to their parents, Nicholas and Sarah (Oliver) Rideout. Nicholas, Jr. was born about 1763, likely at Falmouth, Maine, and is believed to have died in Carleton County, N.B., about 1833. It was him, with his brothers Oliver and Thomas, who emigrated with their families toCarleton County. Nicholas Rideout, Jr. apparently lived in Maugerville, in Sunbury County, where deeds show he was married by 1787, and that his first wife, RebeccaTreadwell, was still living in 1800. It is probably well to note herethat 'Rideouts in America' shows his first wife as Hannah Treadwellrather than Rebecca Treadwell. By his first wife there were at least twochildren who were: 1. Thomas Rideout, born in Maugerville, 15 Dec 1790, who married hiscousin, Hannah, daughter of Oliver and Sussanah (Seaman) Rideout. Theyare mentioned at No.1 in the sixteenth in this series. 2. Nicholas Rideout, born at Maugerville, N.B., about 1797. It seemsalmost certain there were other children born between Thomas, b. c1790,and Nicholas, b. c1797, but if there were George H. Hayward (below) hasno record of them. The York County marriage records show that NicholasRideout and Hannah Gibson, both of Wakefield, were married 03 Nov 1821,by F. Bibble, in the presence of Thomas Rideout and Lewis Dibble. This,of course, would be 'old Wakefield', which then was in the County of Yorkand included all the lands along both sides of the Saint John River fromWoodstock north to about where Bath is now located. Nicholas and Hannah(Ginson) Rideout are shown in both the 1851 and 1861 Census records, living in what is now the Parish of Brighton, in Carleton County. Theyhad no children. Rebecca (Treadwell) Rideout likely died late in the year 1800, or in1801, and Nicholas married second, 28 Jun 1802, Jane, daughter of Evanand Mary Munro. It is not known how long they lived after coming to 'oldWakefield', but they were both living in 1818, and perhaps long after.Of this marriage it appears there were about a dozen children but myGeorge) record may not be complete, and it may contain errors oromissions. 3. Rebecca Rideout, m. 22 Oct 1823, Thomas Whitfield. (. Hannah Rideout, m. 25 Dec 1828, James Swim. There may also have been Polly Rideout. She is said to have married JohnDay, but there is no record of the marriage in the old register. Or didI (George) miss it when I (George) was searching? Records of 150 yearsago are sometimes difficult to read, as some of you may know. Compiled by: George H. Nicholas Rideout Sr.1
M, #58602
Note* | Most Rideouts of Carleton County are probably related. Chances are goodthey all descended from Nicholas and Sarah (Oliver) Rideout who came fromNew England and settled in Maugerville, Sunbury County, New Brunswick,Canada, probably in 1763. Nicholas and Sarah Rideout had about a dozenchildren, which was an average family in their time. At least three oftheir sons, Nicholas, Thomas and Oliver, removed with their families fromMaugerville and settled in Carleton County. Compiled by: George H. Oliver Rideout1
M, #58263, b. circa 1767, d. after 1846
Note* | Oliver, son of Nicholas and Sarah (Oliver) Rideout was born at Maugerville about 1767. Church records show that he married, at Maugerville, Nov. 17, 1794, Susannah Seaman. She was born in New England about 1770, and probably came to the Saint John River with the Loyalist refugees in 1783. Deeds suggest that Oliver and Susannah were living in Maugerville in 1821, and in Wakefield, Carleton County by 1826. It is therefore likely they arrived some time between those dates, at which time Oliver would have been at least 54 years of age. Deeds also show that both Oliver and Susannah Rideout were living in 1842, and that Oliver had died before 1846. It is thought that Susannah probably predeceased him, and that he may have married a second time. Does anyone know their death dates, and where they were buried? They apparently lived at Somerville, somewhere in the neighbourhood of were the Peoples Church now stands (about a half mile below the covered bridge). Was Lucretia Rideout, age 60, shown in the 1851 Census in the Parish of Wakefield, Oliver's widow by a second marriage? Oliver and Susannah (Seaman) Rideout had 13 children, probably all born at Maugerville. But it appears they all came with their parents to Carleton County, at which time the eldest was probably about 27 to 30 years of age. Dear Don, Here is what I have on Prudence Rideout's family.
