Note*Albert's nickname was 'A.J'. He served in World War I with the 24th Battalion of the Victoria Rifles in France, and was discharged in June 1919 at Fredericton. He was sports minded and loved salmon fishing on the Nashwaak River near Fredericton and in the Miramichi River near Blissfield, New Brunswick. When his grandchildren, Richard & Ron were small, they had a 'Flying Saucer' (snow sled). A.J. thought he would show them just how to get from the top to the bottom of the hill in a hurry. He forgot that there was a rock midway down and it was barely covered with snow. He stood on the 'Flying Saucer' and pushed off. He was doing fine and had even noticed his audience looking out the window at him. He hit the rock, the'Flying Saucer' took off in the air and A.J. flew too. Arms and legs were going around like a windmill, but gravity caught up with him and he landed! He never complained of aches and pains, but he did tell the boys never to follow Grampie's example.

Tragedy struckfive years later on the night of Dec. 20, 1925 when the beautiful oldcolonial house burned to the ground. The family moved to another houseon the property, sharing it with a family who had been renting it.During the winter, Andrew purchased a partially completed house a fewmiles away at Mill Cove. In April, the house was moved on the Grand Lakeby 22 teams of horses. They stuck a burst in the ice which knocked theskids from under the house and left it in four feet of water. Afterrectifying this set back and overcoming various other obstacles, thehouse was brought ashore on April 7, 1926. It took seven more days toget the house from the shore up to the foundation of the old homesteadusing a 'deadhead' and a wench. He was councillor for Queens County for eight years. Note*Andrew Gunter owned and operated a wood boot named 'The Mayflower' that arried sawn lumber down the Saint John River. (The river current wasn't strong enough to carry the wood down to Saint John.) One year, black cholera hit the City of Saint John and the citizens ran short of many commodities including wood. Andrew saw the opportunity and loaded his boat, but couldn't find anyone willing to accompany him to the stricken city. Undaunted, he sailed off by himself. When he reached his destination, a man came to the wharf offering to purchase his entire load. After speedily dispensing of his wares, Andrew hurried back home, unfortunately without contracting the dreaded disease. His farm was at White's Cove on Grand Lake.

He was the son of Samuel Gunter and Elizabeth Courser
Marriage*Dell Gunter married Martha Richards
Death*Dell Gunter died on 24 February 1917 in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada, at age 60; Cause of death was pneumonia. The obituary of Dell Gunter was given to Edwin Wayne Gunter by Joanne (Uzzell) Renninger and reads as follows:
'Fredericton Loses A Beloved Citizen' The Late Dell Gunter succumbs to an attack of pneumonia. There was general sorrow throughout the city of Fredericton this morning when word went around that Dell Gunter, proprietor of the York street stables, one of the capital's best known citizens, passed away. Not only in the city but throughout the country and the central part of the province, there will be hundreds of the deceased's acquaintances and friends to whom the sad news will come as a shock and a calamity. To many of these, of course, it may mitigate the blow that announcement was made last week of Mr. Gunter's serious illness, which of itself was a surprise inasmuch as during his whole life sickness of any kind was something to him personally unknown; and the deceased's condition was since reported in the press from day to day. But to all whose privilege it was to be immediately acquainted with him as a man there will be a sense of personal loss in the death of Mr. Gunter, not to be atoned. The late Mr.Gunter was in his 62nd year and was born in Bear Island, York County, which he left in early life to settle down in the Nashwaak valley, subsequently moving to Boiestown. He was the son of Samuel Gunter, now a resident of Fredericton and for the past several days in precarious health. He married Miss Martha Richards, daughter of the well known lumber operator, the late William Richards, of which there are now living besides his widow, three sons and four daughters, the first mentioned being Dr. J. H. Gunter and Mr. Wendell Gunter of Philadelphia, and Mrs.Andrew Gunter of at home; and the daughters, Mrs. C. C. Camp of this city, Mrs. Chip McCloskey of Toronto, Miss Marion Gunter of Philadelphia and Miss Elizabeth Gunter at home; there are also two grandchildren. The other near surviving relatives of the deceased are his two brothers, Frank Gunter of Dumfries and Herbert Gunter of this city. The late Mr.Gunter - - everywhere and most familiarly and affectionately known as'Dell' - - Moved from Boiestown to Fredericton some years ago when the late Israel Golding (at one time also a landed proprietor of the outer country) arranged for the sale of his livery stable business in Fredericton in order to take up the duties of city treasurer; and the business and premises were bought out by Mr. Gunter. This transfer was the beginning and foundation of Mr. Gunter's business career in Fredericton. Dell Gunter had made good in every walk of life. Possessed of rare business instincts, he had before entering city life carried on successfully active operations in the lumber woods and on the farm; and one of the most outstanding features of his make-up was his wonderful vitalizing energy, strong in initiative and sustained by a dogged perseverance. His keen foresight seldom failed him; and his enterprises by which he accumulated large and profitable properties, were along industrial lines and such as resulted to the general good of the community. In the battle of life Mr. Gunter stood shoulder to shoulderwith his men and always figuratively speaking, with his coat off. One central fact in his record to be treasured in after years was his strict business integrity. The word Dell Gunter was proverbially as good as his bond. By Mr. Gunter's death there is removed not only a good citizen whose place is hard to fill, but a most genial personality. He was a human hearted man, of finest sensibilities, of a nature socially that endeared him to all, making the separation one to be followed by the insistent and incredible sense of loss. The remains of the deceased will be interred at the Rual Cemetery, the funeral to take place from the house at 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon, the ceremony to be conducted by Rev.Mr. Ferguson.1
