Death was caused by pneumonia. The late Judge was one of Canada’s best jurists and most popular citizens. Born in Tyendinaga Township in 1826, he would have been eighty years of age in July next. When a young man he studied law here with Rose; Bell and his first work after graduating was the purchasing of the right of way for the Grand Trunk. In 1872 he was appointed Junior Judge of Hastings, and at the death of the late Judge Sherwood was appointed Senior Judge, which duties he performed up to his illness. Deceased was a son of the late Richard Lazier. His widow, formerly Miss Francis Hanckel of Charlotteville, Virginia, survives, as well as one son and one daughter, Stuart and Rose. Col. Lazier, this city, is a brother. The late Judge was a trustee of St. Andrew’s Church. Flags are at half-mast on public buildings, and the County Council adjourned out of respect."2
