Roger de Beaumont1
M, #97915, b. circa 1015, d. 29 November 1094

Bayeux Tapestry, depicting Roger de Beaumont with beard, William the Conqueror seated to his left, and Bishop Odo, half-brother of William, to the left of William, blessing the food at the feast table. The Bayeux Tapestry was created in the 11th century to commemorate the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, and his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The tapestry is 230 feet long and about 20" wide. It is on permanent display at the museum in Bayeux, France. Scanned from The Bayeux Tapestry, by David Wilson.
Relationship | 24th great-grandfather of David Arthur Walker |
Last Edited | 1 Feb 2012 |
Biographical Note* | According the author James Planché (1796-1880), Roger de Beaumont "was the noblest, the wealthiest, and the most valiant seigneur of Normandy", a cousin of William, Duke of Normandy. He has been described as one of the "greatest barons in Normandy". Although he was portrayed in the Bayeux Tapestry seated next to William the Conqueror at a feast table, he did not actually participate in the Battle of Hastings, as he was considered too old (he was all of 51 years). He was left in Normandy as chief advisor to Duchess Maud. However, he did contribute to William's ambitious cause by providing at his own expense sixty vessels to transport Norman troops across the English Channel. Roger's eldest sons, Robert and Henry, fought at Hastings, as seen in several accounts. As a result, these sons were rewarded with rich lands in England, and both were made English earls by the sons of the Conqueror. Roger de Beaumont first came to England with the Conqueror late in 1067. Such a late arrival after the Battle of Hastings did not preclude him from sharing the spoils of the victory. He was granted lands in Dorset and Gloucestershire.1,2 |
Nickname | Roger de Beaumont also is known commonly by the nickname of Barbatus or La Barbe he was known by this nickname because of his beard, an unusual feature as Normans usually were clean shaven. This characteristic was featured in the thirty-second panel of the Bayeux Tapestry.1,3 |
Birth* | He was born circa 1015.1 |
Marriage* | He married Adeline of Meulan, daughter of Waleran III Count de Meulan and Oda de Conteville, circa 1048.1 |
Death* | Roger de Beaumont died on 29 November 1094.1 |
