The article in the Houston County History (1982) by Daphne (Dyer)Baumgartner says: 'My grandmother was Nancy Jane Vance, daughter of Aaronand Lucinda Tucker Vance, born August 13, 1847 in Barnet, Vermont. Theywere married October 2, 1871 and spent their honeymoon in Chicago duringthe time of the Great Chicago Fire [which was Oct. 8, 1871]. [There areportrait pictures taken while on their honeymoon on display in theHouston County Historical Society Museum in Caledonia, MN.] They had aharrowing experience getting across the bridge to safety, carrying theirtrunk between them. They settled in Houston and built their home in 1877.It was refered to as a mansion and still stands as the Cook Funeral Homeon Jackson Street. The home was beautifully appointed with walnut doorsand bannister. My daughter and her cousins would slide down the bannistermuch to the concern of my grandmother. My grandmother taught school atMoney Creek before she was married. After sizteen years of married life she became totally blind at the age of 40. On August 22, 1888, shewas awarded a certificate from the Chautauqua Literary and ScientificCircle for completing a four year reading course. This was a remarkableachievement since she was blind the last year of the course. She learnedBraille, continued to use the typewriter and crocheted bedspreads inspite of her handicap.'
