Jack Crawford1
M, #54294, d. November 1952
Note* | A neighbor one mile west of Bob Wright, had an accident with a team and mower, and his right arm was severed. Mrs.Crawford, alone and desperately in need of help, ran frantically across the field to the Wright's. Major Thomas William Wright saw her coming, and minutes later was galloping on his horse, Jack, at breakneck speed to town for the town doctor, across the Pipestone, over an eight mile stretch, always urging the animal to greater effort. Jack responded gallantly, and fifteen minutes later, white with lather, pulled up in front of the doctor's office. Dr. Albert W. Argue, with his fast team of broncos, was soon speeding to the help of the injured man. Jack recovered, and he never allowed the loss of his arm to be a handicap, but carried on his farming operations with success. He was also active in the Agricultural Society, Kirkfield Church and all community affairs. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford retired to the Coast in later years. Herb Wolfe now (1980) on the Crawford farm, while Mark, grandson of Jack Crawford, occupies the Wright farm. About 1914 the Mahoods moved onto Bob Wright's homestead, and their son, Fergus, farmed that land, along with the Chambers farm where he lived. Jack and his wife retired from the farm in 1946 and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Jack died in November, 1952 and his wife in April, 1954. Beth married Ken Thronton and lives in Vancouver. They have two children, John and Ann, who both live in Toronto, Canada. Jean married Foster Mills of Winnipeg and they live in Yuma, Arizona -- no family. Don started farming the Wright farm in 1944 and was married to Viola Warwick in 1945. They have two children, Mark and Sandra. Mark took over the farm in 1975 and supplements his income by doing carpentry work in Regina, Saskatchewan. He married Brenda Dean of Assiniboia in 1975 and has two children. Sandra married Dale Wilson in 1975. They live in Saskatoon where Dale does carpentry work. They have two children. Don moved to Grenfell in 1974 but still has a half section of land. He served on the Brownhill School Board and Rural Telephone Co. for many years and still (1980) takes an active part on the Wheat Pool Committee and is a Co-op Board member. This account is found on pages 27 and 28 in the book, 'Grit and Growth,The Story of Grenfell', by Annie I. Yule, 1980 edition and was privately published by the Grenfell Historical Committee, 1980.
