Note*In the thirties, there was a bad fire in the Bear Lodge. It started justnorth of Sundance and burned nearly a week. Milton fought on it andthere was one siege of fire fighting when he and his helpers werefighting thirty-six hours with very little water or food. A rain finallyput the fire out. In his younger days, Milton had helped fight a good many fires. He worked for the ForestService, for Rangers Rube Riley and Ted Cochran. During that time he andother men went through the timber poisoning and killing porcupine andalso cruising timber for beetles in the pine trees. They also maintainedtrails and roads in the Bear Lodge. There has been lots of timber cutand hauled out by individuals, Homestake sawmill sawmill of Spearfish,Nieman's and Johnsons sawmills of Hulett. The country sure differentthan it did when Thomas and Gwennie moved onto their homestead. Milton has the home place and still (1981) lives on it with his wife,Helen. His brother, Jim, lived with them until his last illness. Hedied at the John Burns hospital in Belle Fourche, Butte County, SouthDakota at the age of eighty-five years.
