Note*James came to the West from Lancaster, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canadain 1882 and homesteaded on S.W. 22-16-8 in Grenfell, now the farm ofMilton Box. Mr. McDonell had a large family. His sons, James 'Jim'Sterry McDonell and Dan saw active service in the Riel Rebellion in1885. On returning home Jim proved up on a homestead by the PipestoneRiver, but later moved back to the original farm. He married PhoebeLamb, and their family grew up in the Summerhill District. His sons,James and John, farmed the old homestead for some years, then later movedto Northern Saskatchewan. Bob McDonell homesteaded on what is now (1980) Edith Moore's farm. Heand John Lamb bought the first binder in the district. It tied onlyabout half the sheaves, but was still much better than cutting wheat witha mower and binding it by hand. Later, a fire destroyed Bob's crops andalso the binder. Bob went to the Klondike with his brother-in-law, DaveEnnis, and didn't return to the prairie. Dan McDonell married Miss Fanny Copeland and homesteaded in the ArlingtonDistrict. Dan kept a pack of hounds and was fond of hunting. Two of the McDonell girls married two Ennis brothers, Dave and Joe.Belle married Robert A. Copeland, and Annie married Ernest Moore. Margaret remembers when she was young and being with her grandmotherAnnie (Ennis) Lamb's one Christmas morning and finding three dolls, anEaton Beauty, a medium sized and a black Sambo. She just knew that Myrtlewould not get a doll so on Grandma's advice she decided to let her havethe middle sized doll, which her Grandma agreed was the right thing todo. The rest of the family came for Christmas dinner and Myrtle had a bigdoll ! Now she would not have to give hers up but a look from Grandmasettled it and both girls had two dolls which was what was the intent!The McDonell's loved to visit Grandma's home on the Pipestone where theyplayed on the hills. They live in Duncan, British Columbia. Glenn Wallace Hill died 11 Dec 1975, in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. Margaret Christina McDonell was living in Duncan, British Columbia in1989.

Note*Robert 'Bob' McDonell homesteaded on what is now (1970) Edith Moore'sfarm. He and John Lamb bought the first binder in the district. It tiedonly about half the sheaves, but was still much better than cutting wheatwith a mower and binding it by hand. Later, a fire destroyed Bob's cropsand also the binder. Bob went to the Klondike with his brother-in-law,Dave Ennis and didn't return to the prairie. This account is stated on page 13 in the book, Grit and Growth, the Storyof Grenfell. by Annie I. Yule. 1907 edition.
