Obituary: "Death of Mr. Cyrus B. Morris

Summerside mourns the loss of one of its finest and best known citizens by the death yesterday morning at his home, 75 Spring Street, of Mr. Cyrus B. Morris. He had been in failing health for about a year during which time he suffered several paralytic attacks. Mr. Morris was born at Bedeque, December 16, 1876, a son of the late Joseph Morris and his wife, the former Anne Wright, of that place. He was educated in the district school and prepared himself for a business career by entering upon a course in commercial book-keeping at the Charlottetown Business College in which he was awarded a diploma for proficiency. Soon afterward he entered the service of Wright Bros. at Victoria, the partners in which firm were the late Norman and Elisha Wright.

For several years Mr. Morris successfully engaged in the lobster canning business, and established a Prince Edward Island branch in Summerside of the N.B. firm of Fred Magee Ltd., and was made its manager for the province. He later became actively engaged in the fox industry, becoming a director in several companies during the boom years of that vocation. His next business step was to enter into a mercantile partnership with Joseph A. Bernard at Tignish, in which he continued until his retirement in 1940. After his retirement Mr. Morris was active in various capacities in Summerside, conducting one of the drives some years ago in aid of the Prince County Hospital, assisting in the Victory Loan campaigns, and at one time was in charge of the Selective Service Bureau here.

Left to cherish his memory are the following children: Victor, in Cornwall, Ont., Allie, Mrs. Arnold Wilson, Stratford, Ont., Florence, Mrs. James A. Morrison, Summerside; Mrs. Jean Woodcock, Winchester, Mass; also six grandchildren. Two other children died several years ago, Arthur and Doris. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. Robert Holland, Bedeque and Harriet, retired nurse, in New Hampshire.

A man of pleasing personality and excellent qualities, the passing of Mr. Morris will be deeply regretted by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance which included the members of the Masonic fraternity, in which Order he had the distinction of being the oldest Past Grand Master in this province. In religion, the deceased belonged to the United Church of Canada, being previous to the union, a Methodist. The funeral takes place on Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Compton Funeral Home, where a service will, in the absence from the province of the pastor of Trinity United Church, be conducted by Rev. Donald J. MacKay, of the Presbyterian Church. Interment to People’s Cemetery." (The home of Cyrus Morris, at 75 Spring Street in Summerside is now the McNaught History Centre & Archives.).2,5

Burial*He was buried in Peoples Cemetery, Summerside, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.2

John 'Bud' Derrikson Morris1

M, b. 1848, d. 4 January 1908
FatherJohn Y. Morris
MotherMartha Collings
Last Edited14 Mar 2007
Biographical Note* The Morris family moved from Kentucky to Indiana where John Derrickson Morris was born in Shelby County, in 1848 to John Y. & Martha Collings Morris. He had one sister, Mary, born in 1841 & one brother born in 1869. At the age of 16 Minerva Ellen Black married John Derrickson Morris. They moved to Cherokee County, Kansas, where the first child, a girl, Carrie Leona was born July 3, 1871. She died March 13, 1956. They lived Cherokee County for three years and then moved to Brown County, Kansas where the second girl, Mary Ellen, was born March 21, 1873. She died January 4, 1887. The first son, Jasper William was born February 24, 1875, and died April 21, 1965. They then moved to Hopkins, Missouri where the second son & third sons were born: George Albert, April 10, 1877 & Steven Albro, August 12, 1879. The Morris family left for the Black Hills in 1883 with a wagon train of three families. They stopped in Spearfish, South Dakota where John D. 'Bud' Morris did carpenter work & played the violin for dancing school taught by callers Posenanski & Charley Pollock. He also played for dances in the area. The fourth son, Berl Leroy, was born in Spearfish, South Dakota on September 3, 1883. He died September 8, 1948 in British Columbia, Canada. In 1891 they left for Boise, Idaho and stayed there a couple of months, going through Billings, Montana when it was just a stockade. They moved back to Kansas, where his oldest brother, William, lived. In1892 Nina Ellen was born in a 'sod shanty'. They remained in Kansas until June 1892, and then left for the Black hills again in a covered wagon with five families. One family (the Candles) stopped at Rapid Creek &homesteaded. Of course there was no city there at that time. The other families drove on to Spearfish Creek. In the year of 1895 the Morris family filed on a 160 acre tract of land at the foot of the Bear Lodge, on the west side of the mountains where he built a five room log house. They moved from Spearfish to the homestead in the spring of1896. They had stock consisting of eight head of horses & a few cows, chickens, geese, & pigs. They also had Nina's Indian pony named Paleface, because of his blazed face & her English shepherd dog named Zip. The place, two miles west of Spearfish was called the 'summer place.' They all went to Normal school in Spearfish, except Nina who was too young at the time. When they moved to the Beaver Creek place, there was not a school or church close by. The nearest one was seven miles up Beaver Creek known as the Perkins school. They went to school by horseback or a small cart. The winters were so severe they usually had school three months in the fall & three months in the summer. The first teacher was May Bonell from Spearfish, South Dakota, a sister of Mrs.John Mahnken who lived on the now Dillon Ruland place. Mrs. Cliff Robinson was the second teacher, & also a Mrs. A.A. Cooke taught there. There were about twenty pupils most of the time. Nina died before she finished telling Harriet Waugh her story. She married Ben F. Mahoney June 8, 1913. They lived in Alva until about1942, and then moved to Hulett. They had six children: Harriet, Ben, Margaret, Lyle, Bill, & Dorothy. They had fifteen grandchildren & twenty three great grandchildren. Nina died April 1969, & Ben died April 1977. This account is stated on pages 345 & 346 in the book, 'Pioneers of Crook County 1876-1920', by the Crook County Historical Society, Crook County, Wyoming, copyright 1981 & Published by State Publishing Co., Pierre, South Dakota.
