Note*Stephen Mahoney, born at Elkton, Maryland on 13 February, 1809, remained there until April 1850. He came to Kanesville, (now Council Bluffs) in a company of 130. He had buried his companion 3 months before leaving Maryland. His family of 11 children with him , one child, Lucinda M. died before reaching Council Bluffs. He married Martha Beaver in Council Bluffs 5April, 1851. By this marriage 6 children were born. He came to Harrison County in 1852, and built a 16 foot square log cabin, built a frame house in 1858. Then he built a saw mill at this time, and was the first to cut lumber in Harrison County. Judge Jonas Chatburn was a partner in farming and milling for 16 years. They started the first saw and grist mill, propelled by water from dammed up Willow Creek, where Elisha later lived. He died 22 February, 1888. Eleven children by his first wife, Rachel.

Note Another version of the above: Among the very early and prominent pioneer settlers may be named Stephen Mahoney, who had a family of eleven children and came in company with one hundred and thirty other persons. They were Latter Day Saints, who came from Maryland. The came to Council Bluffs in April, 1851, and came to Magnolia township in 1852, entering land on section 33-80-43, which is still owned by the widow. He died in February, 1888. He and Judge Jonas Chatburn operated the first saw and shingle mill in HarrisonCounty, continuing for 16 years. He paid forty per cent interest for money with which to enter his land.

Martha Barrowclough Beaver was born 11 April, 1828 in Barnesley, Yorkshire, England. She came to Philadelphia having married in England to Mr. Beaver, to whom 2 children were born and both died. Stephen Mahoney belonged to the 'OLD CHURCH' before coming west. History speaks of the 'old church' which usually means the church under Martyr Joseph Smith. Stephen Mahoney was baptized in Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland in 1842 by Elisha Davis, Ordained Elder by J. Dyer 1n 1842. Martha Mahoney was baptized in Magnolia, Iowa in May 1863. Magnolia was the County Seat from 1853 to 1876. The first to locate in Magnolia Township was George Blackman in 1850. The Reorganized Church was organized in Magnolia in March 1870. The church was erected in 1874 and dedicated by Joseph Smith. Previous to this, services were held in schoolhouses. The text refers to Martha Barrowclough Beaver and Mr Beaver. According to the later information, Martha was married previously to William Beaver Ketcherman, and then separated. It is presumed that Martha’s maiden name was Barrowclough. This account is listed in Edward Hirum & Evelyn Mae (Nilson) Mahoney'sFamily Tree, 10706 S. 89th E. Ave., Tulsa, Oklahoma 74133-7354 E-mail: (Ed Mahoney) Among the very early and prominent pioneer settlers may be named Stephen MAHONEY, who had a family of eleven children and came in company with one hundred and thirty other persons. PIONEER MILLS Judge Jonas CHATBURN and Stephen MAHONEY came to the township in 1853 and built the pioneer mill in 1854. It was originally a sawmill and was propelled by the waters of the Willow River. It was located on section 34. Although an Englishman, Mr.CHATBURN soon exhibited Yankee ingenuity. With his own hands having prepared a set of burrs with which to grind corn, and having all complete to attach to the power of the sawmill, except the belting, raw cow-hide was cut into strips and the mill set to work. One grist was ground out and MAHONEY and CHATBURN went to supper, and while about the table they had ground the first corn ever ground in this part of Iowa. They also told big stories as to how much they proposed to grind the following day. But how frequently are men's hopes suddenly blasted. When they returned to the mill, lo, and behold, the wolves had been there and eaten up the raw-hide belts, leaving the corn mill detachedfrom the power. It was soon repaired, however, and this same mill ground the first meal, sawed the first plank, and rolled the first wool in Harrison County. This mill was finally abandoned and Mr. CHATBURN removed to Woodbine and engaged in milling.

MAHONEY FAMILY HISTORY Stephen Mahoney was born in Elkton Maryland February 13, 1809, and died February 22, 1888. He remained in this locality until the month ofApril 1850 when in company with other emigrants, 130 in all, he with his family of 11 children started for the west stopping at Council Bluffs, Iowa. His wife having died about 3 months before his journey west. On April 5, 1851 he married Martha Beaver, who was one of the above emigrants to leave Philadelphia enroute to Utah. They came to Harrison County in Iowa from Council Bluffs in the spring of 1852 and homesteaded on a place just a mile east of Magnolia Iowa, The oldest town in Harrison County. They built a log cabin 16 foot square and moved into their home before the puncheon floor was laid. They lived in this house with one attached to it until 1858 and they built a frame house two stories high. Stephen Mahoney built a saw mill at this time which was the first one to cut lumber in Harrison County. A large number of people gathered to see the first slab which some of the men carried off as a relic. People said when this mill was started 'Now we can have some tables and doors'. Prior to the saw mill being started, Stephen operated a small grist mill. It was propelled by water from Willow Creek, dammed up where the Elisha Mahoney place is now. Judge Jonas Chatburn was a partner for 16 years both in farming and milling. Mr. Mahoney and Mr. Chatburn were very much attached to one another. After working all summer of year1851 building dams, their work was all lost by high water, but they fixed it up again, but did not get ready to grind until about 1853. They kept house in their wagons and saw hard times, returning home in the fall shaking with chills and fever. They borrowed money to hold their land, paying 45 % interest. Judge Chatburn dressed some prairie boulders from which he constructed a pairof mill stones upon which they ground corn meal and in the manufacture of the first flour in Harrison County. Mrs. Chatburn's veil was used a bolting cloth. Chatburn walked to Council Bluffs, the round trip making 75 miles to get the first seed corn planted. He bought 1/2 bushel paying $1.50 for it and carried it home on his back wading through water knee deep on the flats where Missouri Valley now stands. These two pioneers possessed startling traits of character and who unaided laid the cornerstone of Harrison County.

NOTE : According to later information, Martha Barrowclough married William Beaver Ketcherman in England, and they separated before she came to the United States. Stephen Mahoney's wife Martha died at the home of her son John Mahoney at Alva, Wyoming at the age of 72 years. She was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire England April 11, 1828. In 1847 married William Beaver, separated she came to America in 1848. Enroute with the group from Philadelphia westward she became acquainted with Stephen Mahoney and married in the spring of 1851. They moved to Harrison County with 10 children of Stephen's by his first wife. One infant died on the route. There they raised a family of six children, four sons and two daughters.Hiram, Benjamin, John, Elisha, Margaret and Sarah. Mrs. Stephen Mahoney was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the early days. Stephen Mahoney's first family --- Jeremiah Mahoney went to Utah about 1860, Married May 17th to Ada Louisa Phippen, two children,Jeremiah W. born May 26th, 1864, Coalville Utah. Married Sarah Giles --four children. William, Stephen, Harriett and James came to Utah. William and James families moved to Idaho. Stephen died in Utah. Harriett married Chester Stanley and lived in Utah. Harriett died in 1901. Several of Harriett's children live near and around the southern part of Idaho. Bert and Will Mahoney, sons of James Mahoney live there. Will is 78 and Bert is 68. Martha Barraclough Beaver who married Stephen Mahoney was born April 11, 1828 in Barnsley Yorkshire England, came to America in 1847. Remaining in Philadelphia until 1849, when she with others moved westward. Stopping at Council Bluffs at that time called Kanesville. Died 16th of August 1900, buried at Alva Wyoming. John Thomas and Hiram Smith Mahoney came to the Centennial Valley east of Spearfish, South Dakota in 1876 and homesteaded. They made several trips between the Black Hills and Iowa with ox teams, also brought 2 wagon loads of chickens out from Iowa. While there ran a sawmill and ranched until 1886. then sold out and moved to the Bear Lodge country of Wyoming, where they lived on ranches on Lame Jones Creek until their death. Stephen Mahoney (Lowell Mahoney's dad) and his father started south with a herd of horses on July 5 1896, sold them along the way finished but dad wintered in Oklahoma and Texas. He went south as far as the Rio Grande River and brought cattle back to Alva Oklahoma, then took the train home.

I found that the name Mahoney originated in 1044. An Irish Lord that lived on the western coast of Ireland assumed the name. He was about the 30th in direct decent from the King of Ireland in the second century. I also found the name Bartholemew Mahoney born October 24, 1802 at Cecil County Maryland. His father's name was Jeremiah Mahoney and hismother's name was Ellen. Bartholemew Married Mary Ann Lightner, adaughter of James and Mary Ann Lightner. She was born in Adams County Penn. These people lived in Nauvoo Ill. in 1844 and were members of the Mormon Church. I believe Bartholemew was a brother of Stephen Mahoney. The Mahoneys have followed the teachings of the L. D. S. or Mormon church ever since the church was formed. They were in Nauvoo Ill. at the time there were so many Mormons massacred. Most of this information has been taken from the files of the Mormon Church. Written by Mrs. Lowell Mahoney. The source of the information apparently being the files of the Mormon Church.
