Mr. Hazard was strictly honest in allhis transactions, and too generous to be hemmed in by creed or party. Hewas a successful farmer for years, and acquired a competence by hisbusiness. A man of cultured intellect and generous heart, Mr. Hazard willbe long remembered for his kindness to all. He was a devoted husband anda most indulgent father.' He married, November 13, 1837, Ann E. In 1733 hewas Speaker of the House of Representatives, and in 1734 was electedDeputy Governor of the Colony, and was re-elected four years insuccession, dying in office in 1738. In 1733 he bought of his father, forone thousand pounds, the farm then (and still) called 'The FodderingPlace.' About this time he built the old house, taken down about twentyyears ago by Joseph Peace Hazard. By his will, George gave this house,with all outbuildings and an 'Island called Ram Island,' to his sonGeorge Hazard, who was Mayor of Newport. |

Note* | He was admitted freeman of the Colony in 1696. In 1701, '02, '06, '07,'09, '13, he was Deputy; in 1703 and 1704, Assistant. May 6, 1713, he wasappointed by the Assembly one of a committee to make the public roadleading through the Colony from 'Pawtucket River to Pawcatuck River morestraight and fair and passable.'1 In 1719 he was appointedLieutenant-Colonel of Militia for the main land,2 and was ever afterwardcalled Colonel George Hazard. He became a large landholder like hisbrother Thomas. In 1695 his father gave him by deed three hundred andfifty acres, being a part of the original purchase; and after the deathof his mother, in 1739, he bought of his nephew, Robert Hazard, theremaining part of the farm with the manor-house. |
