Note* | Alfred Matthew Snyder was the 2nd born the 28th of July, 1856, in Crown Point, Indiana to Smith Tillman and Roxanne (Norton) Snyder. Matthewworked for Henry Yesler in his sawmill in the early days of Seattle. He later farmed on a small scale at their place at 2413 Dexter Avenue in Seattle, Washington. (the house is no longer there). He grew corn andberries under cultivation, and milked 6 or 8 cows. They also raised chickens. Eventually, Matthew had the hillside on his property, dug for sand and gravel and sold it to the City of Seattle for paving while Aurora Avenue was being built on the east side of Queen Anne hill. The Aurora Bridge was also being built at this time in 1932. Matthew married May Viola (Barney) on the 8th of September, 1878, in Sac City, Iowa and from this union, six children were born, Roy D., Ray, Hazel Ruth, Lottie May, Lela Myrtle and Verna. Alferd Matthew Snyder died 26 Dec 1937 in Seattle, King County, Washington. Descendancy starts with Tillman Smith Snyder. He is buried In Snyder Plot, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 700 West Raye Street, Seattle, King County, Washington. There is no Gravestone. |

Uncle Roy lived athome with his parents, Alfred Matthew and May Viola (Barney) Snyder.While he was home, he had a very large morning paper route. He would beup early and do his route, then come home, get his golf clubs and headfor the golf course. Uncle Roy liked to smoke. He would buy his tobacco and cigarette paper and he had a little machine and roll his owncigarettes. He would roll maybe twenty or thirty at a time. Some timeshe would have a bag of tobacco and take out a paper and roll just onewith his fingers and light it. Uncle Roy had had all his teeth pulled when he in his twenties or so. Hewore false teeth for many years and would take them out at any time justto show his nieces and nephews. He had a very heavy mustache thatreminded you of Andy Gump. Later his shaved it off. After his parents died, he lived in a small basement apartment in Seattleon Aurora Avenue about a half mile south of the Aurora Bridge. He is buried In the Snyder Plot, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 700 West RayeStreet, Seattle, King County, Washington, U.S.A. There is no Gravestone. See photos in his scrapbook. |

Smith appears in the 1850 Federal Census living in CentreTownship, Lake Co., Indiana with family number 20, next door to DianthaNorton family. 1860 FEDERAL CENSUS COPY M653-274 PAGE 971 LINE 34 INDIANA LAKE CO.CENTRE TWP. Taken 1st August by Joseph P. Smith. It shows Smith; age36; farmer; with real estate value of $280. He was born in Ohio about1824. His wife Roxanna is age 32; born in New York state. The childrenare Diantha A. age 05; Alfred M. age 03; Oliver L. age 01; and an unnamedmale age 6/12; all of the children were born in Indiana. Also livingwith the family is Roxanna's sister Susan age 16 born in Michigan. This obituary was on page 4 of the Black Hills Weekly Journal newspaperon the 6th of December, 1895, and was mailed to Donald Raymond Coy, 380651st Ave. SW Seattle, King County, Washington on the 11th of March 1997. 'Obituary of Smith TillmanSnyder Died at Scott's Mill, seven miles west of Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota, on Tuesday evening, the 3rd of December, 1895. Smith Tillman, aged seventy three years. The deceased had been ailing for the past six weeks and had returned from a visit to Minnesota about a week ago. He has been making his home with his son, Oliver Roy, who has a horse ranch near Scott's Mill and at whose home he died. Tuesday evening the old gentleman went out to the barn, but had only reached the door when he dropped to the ground dead. He leaves one son, Oliver Roy, with whom he was living, a daughter, Diantha Alvereta 'Alice', at Sioux Falls, Lincoln County, South Dakota, and a son, Alfred Matthew Snyder, Seattle, King County, Washington. The funeral will be held this afternoon, interment being made at Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota.' |
