Note* | Of Plymouth, Salem, Mass., Providence, R.I. Abridged Compendium, Frederick Virkus (CD 113) ============================================== Memoirs of the Wilkinson Family Author: Israel Wilkinson This book contains the history and genealogy of the Wilkinson family ofRhode Island. Bibliographic Information: Wilkinson, Israel. Memoirs of the WilkinsonFamily. Davis & Penniman. Jacksonville, Ill. 1869. Pages 3-6 RHODE ISLAND was settled by Roger Williams, a native of Wales, who wasborn 1598, and was liberally educated under the patronage of Sir EdwardCoke. He embarked for America, Feb. 5, 1631, and went to Salem to preachin connexion with Rev. Mr. Skelton. His favorite theme was liberty ofconscience in religious matters, and that civil magistrates as such haveno power in the church, and that Christians as such are subject to nolaws or control, but those of King Jesus. These doctrines offended therulers of Massachusetts Colony, and he was banished by sentence of theircourt. In the winter of 1636, he came to Seacunck, now Seekonk, and beganhis plantation, but was ordered away by the Governor, as being stillwithin the limits of their jurisdiction. He departed thence, and crossedthe river, and stopped near a spring, which is called Roger Williams'Spring to this day. Here he began to build, and, in recognition of God'smerciful care, gave the name of Providence to his settlement. He hadpreviously married Mary (???) For about fifty (47) years he lived in Providence, and in 1683--being 85years of age--he died, and was buried on his own lot (No. 38) betweenBenefit and North Main Streets, near the spring which still bears hisname. His house stood on the east side of North Main St., and his familyburial ground was just in the rear of the carriage house of SullivanDorr. For many years his grave was forgotten, and could not beidentified--the mounds having become leveled with the surrounding earthand covered with green sward. Z. Allen, Esq., in his 'Memorial of RogerWilliams,' says: 'Historical records state that the death of RogerWilliams occurred in the year 1683, and that he was buried with martialhonors. The smoke of the musketry, temporarily hovering in the air overhis grave, formed as permanent a mark of respect as was ever bestowed tohonor it. Not even a rough stone was set up to designate the spot.' =============================================== Roger Williams of Providence, RI: There were several 'Roger Williams' living in New England in earlyhistory. This genealogy deals with the Roger who settled in Rhode Islandin 1636. He was the son of James and Alice (Pemberton) Williams of England, whohad four children: Sydrach, Catherine, Roger and Robert. His father James(son of Mark and Agnes (Audley) Williams, was a merchant tailor of London- his rank next below gentry. His mother Alice, was the daughter ofRobert Pemberton whose wife was Catherine Stokes, sister of Roger Stokes. The Pembertons were landed gentry. The great fire of London destroyed thechurch in which the records of birth and baptism of the family were kept. Roger was born at the beginning of the 17th century, in the time of JamesI of England. He married Mary Barnard Dec. 15, 1629 in High Lever Church,Essex, England, and they arrived in Boston in 1631 on the ship Lyon.Various historians have told of his journeyings to Salem, Plymouth, backto Salem, to Seekonk, Massachusetts, and finally settling in Providence,Rhode Island. He was the father of many descendants. This book contains the genealogical records of the Roger Williams FamilyAssociation - collected during the past fifty years. It is not a completegenealogy. By this public printing of our records we hope many peoplewill be enabled to establish their lines of descent from Roger Williams, and that we may be notified of additional data, to be published at somefuture time. We are indebted to many for material given us, especially to Miss EailyH. Paine for her work on early records and to Mrs. Annie Irons for valuedhelp. Compiled and published by: Mrs. C. W. July 15, 1949 A monument on Prospect Terrace, Providence, was dedicated June 29, 1939by the Roger Williams Memorial Association. This association wasorganized in 1850 and five years later Stephen Randall made a gift of81,000 to be used as a nuclous for the erection of a monument. This fundwas increased to $45,000 in 1936, to which was added a stateappropriation of $23,000 and other gifts, which made the projectpossible. The 14-foot statue, weighing ten tons was hewn from finegrained blue white granite from Westerly, R. I. It is set between twohuge granite pylons, forming the sides of a rectangular arch. The costwas about $70,000. |
