Death*Bertha Bread Brace died in July 1909, at age 28, in near, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, "Two Island girls, Bertha and Daisy Brace, daughters of R. K. Brace of Charlottetown, were drowned in the St. Clair River, just below Sarnia, Ont., last week. Both were officers in the Salvation Army. The young ladies, accompanied by Miss Cooper of the local army, were spending the afternoon by the river, and the sisters were bathing. Miss Daisy, the younger, was an expert swimmer. The two had been in the water about five minutes and were splashing about with arms clasped when they slipped over the channel bank into deep water and disappeared. Miss Cooper called for help, and Robert Harrison, a chain maker from the Standard Chain works nearby, and others, responded, but the bodies had completely disappeared. Miss Bertha Brace arrived in Sarnia this spring. Her sister came from Boston two weeks ago. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents and relatives in this province."5

There was also Mary Forrest (age 16), a domestic, and Fred Proud (age 18), a lodger. Richard was a retail grocer. The family religion was Methodist.2

Richard was a grocer, Nelson an apprentice machinist. The family religion was Methodist, except for Bertha, who was a member of the Salvation Army.3

Death*Daisy Wesley Brace died in July 1909, at age 20, in near, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, "Two Island girls, Bertha and Daisy Brace, daughters of R. K. Brace of Charlottetown, were drowned in the St. Clair River, just below Sarnia, Ont., last week. Both were officers in the Salvation Army. The young ladies, accompanied by Miss Cooper of the local army, were spending the afternoon by the river, and the sisters were bathing. Miss Daisy, the younger, was an expert swimmer. The two had been in the water about five minutes and were splashing about with arms clasped when they slipped over the channel bank into deep water and disappeared. Miss Cooper called for help, and Robert Harrison, a chain maker from the Standard Chain works nearby, and others, responded, but the bodies had completely disappeared. Miss Bertha Brace arrived in Sarnia this spring. Her sister came from Boston two weeks ago. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents and relatives in this province."4
