Born in the year 1816 she was the daughter of the late Edward Rayner of Traveller's Rest. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church for fifty years, where she was a most faithful servant to her Master, and was never weary of comforting the sick and needy. Besides her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Cannon of Brockton, Mass., and three sons: Edward of Lot 14; William and Henry of Lot 16 are left to revere the memory of a dutiful wife and kind mother. The sad news was received by Mrs. Maud Read of Read's Corner, near Summerside, informing her of the death in action of her son, Alan Rattenbury Read.

The telegram read: "The Minister of Defence regrets to inform you that Rifleman Alan Rattenbury Read has been officially reported killed in action on the 27th of October. If any further information becomes available it will be forwarded as soon as received."

Fusilier Read was 20 years of age. He enlisted in December last and left for overseas in the spring.

He is survived by his mother and four brothers: David in Charlottetown, Benjamin, Morton and Ernest all at home. Prior to enlisting he was employed with the P.E.I. Bag Company in Summerside.2,1
