Moved to Yocum Valley, Lake Co., Oregon in 1916 at age 11,in the fifth grade. His grandmother Priscilla Cordelia (Thornton) Kernanlived with his family and influenced him greatly. She had walked toOregon on the wagon trail. He skied in Yocum in the winter 1916-17. Hebegan smoking in 1917, at age 12. He made ice cream with other boys fromroped wild cows milk mixed with ice from lava crevices in the highaltitude valley. When he married Ruth they had a new Ford Model A roadster. Ruth had discovered the location ofhis father through the Spanish American War records. Harry had lived inthe same vicinity of Woburn and Reading since his return from Oregon in1907. Carved several official145thBattalion plaques 12' diameter, one dated March 1944. He was a ChiefPetty officer, machinist mate but was assigned to malarial control in theSolomon Islands and Okinawa attached to the Marines. He was also trainedin camouflage while in the Pacific, but never used it because the wardrew to an end. Member VFW V644829, 1 June 1944. Honorable discharge on5 Nov 1945. On return from WWII he lived in the parsonage at SW 32nd Place andLincoln St., Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon where his family wasestablished, from Nov1945 to Jun 1946, while he taught school in WestLinn, Oregon. Purchased a 1938 Buick Century that year. It had manymechanical problems. Moved family to Vancouver, Washington for the summerof 1946 while he attended school at Vanport, Oregon. Moved the familyfor two weeks to Lake Creek Camp, Umpqua National Forest, Douglas Co.,Oregon in Aug, 1946 for two weeks. This was the site of his honeymoonwith Ruth in 1926, Moved in temporarily with his cousin and step-uncle:Roy Agee while a house was being finished on Alameda St., Roseburg.There he rented for a few months a house while the one he had bought at222 Alameda was being built. Besides his wife and two sons he hosted hismother in law M. O. De Lap and his step father, Ray Agee, brother ofCounty Clerk Roy Agee. Ray was ailing.
