Nickname Ann Slocum also is known commonly by the nickname of Nancy Slocum.1
Name Variation Ann Slocum is also known as Ann Nancy.2
Birth*She was born on 25 January 1771 in North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island. an alternate birth place is Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island (Ancestry.co.uk.)2,3
She was the daughter of Capt. Ebenezer Slocum Sr. and Esther Corey
(Witness) EmigrationAnn Slocum emigrated with Capt. Ebenezer Slocum Sr. on 11 April 1783 in Huntington Bay, Suffolk County, New York; Ebenezer was a farmer in North Kingstown, Rhode Island in 1777/78 (Rhode Island Colonial Records, vol. viii, pp. 174, 368). He left Rhode Island shortly after this and was a Lieutenant in the Loyal New Englanders on Long Island, New York. He immigrated to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1783 with his wife, four children and his uncle Eleazer Slocum aboard the ship Union. The ship passenger list declared that Ebenezer was accompanied by his wife Esther Corey, two over ten (Elizabeth Ruth and Nancy Ann) and two under (Daniel and possibly Charles). "Return of the Families & Embark on Board the Union Transport, Consett Wilson Master, began Huntington Bay April 11th & Compleated April 16th 1783." His two oldest children (Eleazer and Ruth) remained in Rhode Island, being reared by their uncle, John Cottrell. In 1784 they settled on the Saint John River, opposite Long Island, in what became Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick. Later they moved to Fanjoy's Point, Grand Lake. In 1787 he was a claimant to the British government for losses suffered in America.4,5,6,7,8
Marriage*Ann Slocum married Marcus Palmer Sr., son of Mr. Palmer and Mary, on 25 October 1789, in Waterborough, Queens County, New Brunswick. Rev. Richard Clarke of Gagetown's Saint John Anglican Church recorded "Waterborough Oct. 25, 1789, married Marcus Palmer and Anne Slocum both of Hampstead, but were married at Mr. Wiggins in the above parish".

Both Ann and Marcus were Quakers, but a Quaker wedding was not legal in New Brunswick at that time. Ann Slocum's older sister was married to a good Anglican, Jacob Wiggins UE. So their home at Grand Lake in the Parish of Waterborough was used for the wedding.2,9
(executrix) WillAnn Slocum was named as executrix of the will of Marcus Palmer Sr. on 14 December 1820 in Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick; The following was transcribed from a photographed copy of a document held at the Gagetown Archives, Gagetown, NB. There are several instances where 'PALMER' is spelled 'PARLMER' in this document. This alternate spelling is also to be found on markers in the Palmer Family Cemetery in Central Hampstead.

Palmer, Marcus - Will          Made 1820 - Filed 1822

Marcus Palmer UE. made his will 14 December 1820, more than a year before he died 28 April 1822. It was filed in the Queens County Registry Office in Gagetown 25 June 1822. He bequeathed:

- to wife ANN (SLOCUM), all my household furniture during her natural life, and then be divided among my three daughters at her discretion. To my wife the use of my house and a comfortable maintenance from the produce of my Lands which shall not be sold during her widowhood, and half the stock.

- to son WILLIAM PARLMER his heirs and assigns 10 shillings.

- to the rest of my sons, CHARLES, MARCUS, DANIEL, and JOSEPH 180 pounds each.

- to son STEPHEN 200 pounds.

- to daughter SARAH 50 pounds.

- to daughter MARY WATSON 30 pounds.

- to daughter SUSANNAH ANN 25 pounds.

- In case of any accident among my children that shall leave them incapable of getting their living, I will they be supported out of my estate.

- In case any of my children die without lawful issue, his part shall be divided among my children in proportion to the sum annexed to their names.

EXECUTORS - MARCUS PARLMER, JR. & THOMAS UNDERHILL
EXECUTRIX - WIFE ANN PARLMER
WITNESSED BY BENJAMIN CLARK, LEONARD SLIP, JAMES SLIP.

MARCUS PARLMER thought when he was making this will that he was taking care of every contingency. He couldn't foresee that in 1835 the home would burn to the ground. Only one chair was saved. It is a hand-made, straight-backed chair. It was painted black with paint made out of buttermilk and lamp black. The rush seat has been recaned several times by Indians, and is in good shape as when the Loyalist ANN SLOCUM PALMER sat in it.9
Death*Ann Slocum died on 11 February 1848 in Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick, at age 77;the death location is more likely to have been Central Hampstead.2,9,10,11
Burial*She was buried in the Palmer Cemetery, Central Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick, 45.648517,-66.108967.

Loyalist*A Loyalist of the American Revolution
Birth*Charles Slocum was born on 19 February 1728/29 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.3,4
He was the son of Ebenezer Slocum and Bathsheba Hull.2
Marriage*Charles Slocum married Sarah Allen, daughter of Ebenezer Allen and Margaret, on 25 August 1749, in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.5,6,7
Biographical Note* Charles and Sarah moved to Portsmouth, Rhode Island around 1774, where they were living in a household with 18 people. Soon after 1774 they moved to North Kingstown, RI. in 1774.
Death*Charles Slocum died on 5 April 1777, at age 48, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island; "While in Young's Cove Road, New Brunswick, Canada, I saw a report of the death of Ebenezer's father, Charles Slocum, who married Sarah Allen, daughter of Ebenezer and Margaret Allen. On April 9 1777, two Yankees came to his house, had dinner and were treated to cider, after which they stood by the garden fence and chatted pleasantly. Suddenly, one drew a pistol and shot Mr. Slocum through the body, and he died in a few moments. The son, Ebenezer (aged abt. 22 years), avenged the death by killing many of the rebels. At one time, 25 men came to the house to capture him. He was upstairs in bed. The Captain posted a man at each window and two over the portico where there was a hole in the roof. The article doesn't say how he escaped." This story from Verna Haywood Coe Rissell.7,8
