Marcus Palmer Sr.
M, #180, b. 5 August 1767, d. 28 April 1822
Biographical Note* | Marcus Palmer Sr. was a United Empire Loyalist. His father's first name is unknown, but his widowed mother Mary married William Lawrence when Marcus was three years old. When he was fifteen, Marcus, his mother and his step-father were refugees on the Commerce, a ship in the July 1783 fleet. In 1789 two important events in his life occurred. When court was in session at Gagetown 14 January 1789, it appointed Joseph Nickerson and 21 year old Marcus Palmer constables for the Parish of Hampstead for the year. Later in 1789, when he was 22 years old, Marcus Palmer married. Rev.Richard Clarke of Gagetown's Saint John Anglican Church recorded "Waterborough Oct. 25 1789. Married Marcus Palmer and Anne Slocum, both of Hampstead, but were married at Mr. Wiggins in the above Parish". Both Ann and Marcus were Quakers, but a Quaker wedding was not legal in New Brunswick at that time. Ann Slocum's older sister was married to a good Anglican, Jacob Wiggins U.E. So their home at Grand Lake in the Parish of Waterborough was used for the wedding.
There is a dress sword on display in Jones House, King's Landing Historical Settlement, near Kingsclear, N.B., although the true origin of the sword is not known. The sword was won at the estate auction of Arlie Palmer by the Kings Landing Historical Settlement. Arlie claimed that the sword was originally owned by Gideon Palmer of Dorchester, New Brunswick, and that Gideon was the father of Marcus Palmer of Queens County. There has never been found any evidence that Gideon ever visited the Palmers of Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick. Gideon had a son named Marcus, and he has been confused with the Queens County Marcus, most notably in print by Othniel Merritt. This dress sword most likely was owned by William Lawrence, second husband of Mary Palmer.
This dress sword was last owned by Arlie Palmer of Central Hampstead. He claimed, as does Kings Landing Historical Settlement, that this sword was owned originally by Gideon Palmer Sr. of Dorchester. It was most likely handed down from the Queens County Palmers, as there is no proof that Gideon ever visited the Palmer Loyalist farm in Central Hampstead. |
Loyalist* | A Loyalist of the American Revolution. |
Birth* | Marcus Palmer Sr. was born on 5 August 1767 in Dutchess County, New York.1,2,3 |
| He was the son of Mr. Palmer and Mary. |
(Witness) Emigration | Marcus Palmer Sr. emigrated with William Lawrence in July 1783 in New York; William, Mary and Marcus (son by her first marriage) emigrated from New York, on the ship Commerce with the Loyalist Fleet, landing at Saint John, New Brunswick. After obtaining land grants, they settled in Hampstead, further up the Saint John River. Marcus, his mother and stepfather settled back of Long Island, on the farm now owned and occupied by his grandson, David Palmer. (Extracted from 'History of Queen's County, N.B.' by E. Stone Wiggins, 1876, page 46.) Marcus seems to have moved to the St. John River where he settled near Long Island. (Extracted from The Journal, Saint John, N.B. year unkown); Loyalist Lineages of Canada, Vol. 1, pg. 629, and Vol. 2, pg. 1044-1046. There is a painting of the Loyalist Fleet, as well as the landing at Saint John, at the Canadian Heritage Gallery at the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa.4,5 |
Occupation* | When Court was in session at Gagetown 14 January 1789 it appointed Joseph Nickerson and 21 year old Marcus Palmer constables for the Parish of Hampstead for the year. on 14 January 1789.5 |
Marriage* | Marcus Palmer Sr. married Ann Slocum, daughter of Capt. Ebenezer Slocum Sr. and Esther Corey, on 25 October 1789, in Waterborough, Queens County, New Brunswick. Rev. Richard Clarke of Gagetown's Saint John Anglican Church recorded "Waterborough Oct. 25, 1789, married Marcus Palmer and Anne Slocum both of Hampstead, but were married at Mr. Wiggins in the above parish".
Both Ann and Marcus were Quakers, but a Quaker wedding was not legal in New Brunswick at that time. Ann Slocum's older sister was married to a good Anglican, Jacob Wiggins UE. So their home at Grand Lake in the Parish of Waterborough was used for the wedding.1,5 |
Will* | Marcus Palmer Sr. left a will on 14 December 1820 in Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick; The following was transcribed from a photographed copy of a document held at the Gagetown Archives, Gagetown, NB. There are several instances where 'PALMER' is spelled 'PARLMER' in this document. This alternate spelling is also to be found on markers in the Palmer Family Cemetery in Central Hampstead.
Palmer, Marcus - Will Made 1820 - Filed 1822
Marcus Palmer UE. made his will 14 December 1820, more than a year before he died 28 April 1822. It was filed in the Queens County Registry Office in Gagetown 25 June 1822. He bequeathed:
- to wife ANN (SLOCUM), all my household furniture during her natural life, and then be divided among my three daughters at her discretion. To my wife the use of my house and a comfortable maintenance from the produce of my Lands which shall not be sold during her widowhood, and half the stock.
- to son WILLIAM PARLMER his heirs and assigns 10 shillings.
- to the rest of my sons, CHARLES, MARCUS, DANIEL, and JOSEPH 180 pounds each.
- to son STEPHEN 200 pounds.
- to daughter SARAH 50 pounds.
- to daughter MARY WATSON 30 pounds.
- to daughter SUSANNAH ANN 25 pounds.
- In case of any accident among my children that shall leave them incapable of getting their living, I will they be supported out of my estate.
- In case any of my children die without lawful issue, his part shall be divided among my children in proportion to the sum annexed to their names.
EXECUTORS - MARCUS PARLMER, JR. & THOMAS UNDERHILL EXECUTRIX - WIFE ANN PARLMER WITNESSED BY BENJAMIN CLARK, LEONARD SLIP, JAMES SLIP.
MARCUS PARLMER thought when he was making this will that he was taking care of every contingency. He couldn't foresee that in 1835 the home would burn to the ground. Only one chair was saved. It is a hand-made, straight-backed chair. It was painted black with paint made out of buttermilk and lamp black. The rush seat has been recaned several times by Indians, and is in good shape as when the Loyalist ANN SLOCUM PALMER sat in it.5 |
Death* | He died on 28 April 1822, at age 54, in Waterborough, Queens County, New Brunswick.1 |
Burial* | He was buried in the Palmer Cemetery, Central Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick, 45.648500,-66.108950. White ballast stone. Inscription: Sacred / to / the Memory of / Marcus Parlmer / who departed this life / April 28th. 1822 / Aged 55 Years.1,6

Marcus settled in Queens County, N.B. in 1784. (Loyalists of New Brunswick, p. 317) Marcus took up a Land Grant on the West side of the St. John River in what soon became known as Hampstead in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. Later he got a Grant of an island in that river just off his original Land Grant. Othniel Merritt's original Palmer research showed Marcus as the son of Gilbert/Gideon Palmer, originally of Westchester, NY and settling in Westmorland County, New Brunswick. This is an error. Marcus Palmer was born about 1767. He died on the 23rd of April, 1822 at a age of 55 according to his tombstone in the Palmer cemetery of Hampstead, N.B. Gilbert Merritt didn't get married and start his family until after he immigrated to Canada. His will does list a son named Marcus, the obvious reason for Othniel's error, but he states that this is one of his two youngest sons. Further, Gilbert's son Marcus was born in 1813, and became a Dorchester, N.B. farmer. This Marcus Palmer was a Deacon to the Methodist Church and married Sarah Millidge Harris. Both of them are buried in Dorchester's Pioneer Cemetary. Together, they had seven daughters--no sons (The Palmer Brothers in the Chignecto, Helen M. Petchey). This leaves in question the origin and ancestery of Marcus Palmer the Loyalist who settled in Hampstead, N.B. He is clearly listed as a loyalist in the Loyalists of New Brunswick. His originating point in America is left blank. Other passenger and loyalist lists do not show where Marcus came from either. The Hon. Horace W. Palmer compiled masses of information on all the Palmers in the United states back in the 50's and early 60's. His unpublished manuscript lists Marcus Palmer of Hampstead on page 4776. Here he says that the parents of Marcus are unknown. Descendants of Marcus 'have stated that their ancestors were said to have come from Rhode Island in 1783 as United Empire Loyalists.' This information fits in that the wife of Marcus, Nancy Ann Slocum's father was a UE Loyalist from North Kingston, RI. This is information Horace Palmer didn't have when compiling his information. He thus concludes that 'we fully believe that they were from the Palmer family of Westchester, NY, and the descendants are somewhat confused in stating that they came from Rhode Island.' Given the rarity of the name Marcus among Palmers, I tend to believe that Marcus Palmer of Hampstead, N.B. is a descendant of the Palmers of Westchester, NY, but not through Gideon Palmer. Further research on Marcus Palmer in the Westchester, NY area may reveal his true ancestry.7 |
