Jr. - The death of Mr. Ingham Wright Palmer Jr., husband of the late Ruth (MacKenzie) Palmer of 370 Riverview Place, Saint John, occurred on Monday, June 2, 2003 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, he was the son of Aleah Maude (Henderson) Palmer and the late Ingham Wright Palmer Sr.. He was called "Ing The King" and with good reason. Born on June 28, 1933 at Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Ingham Palmer was the Voice of harness racing in the Maritime Provinces, calling races from the judges stands in P.E.I., Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. During a 42 year career, Ingham called more than 25,000 races, more than any other person in the history of Canadian harness racing. He called races in Ontario, Montreal and Winnipeg, as well as the Maritimes during a career that began in 1954. As a sportscaster at CFBC radio in Saint John, Ingham promoted the races and helped to make Saint John Exhibition Park the "Giant of Maritime Racing" for an extended period of time. His harness racing columns appeared in the Moncton Times, the Saint John Telegraph Journal and Maritime harness racing publications, all in the best interest of the sport Ingham was named sports director at CFBC in 1973 and quickly became Saint John’s most listened to sportscaster. His focus was on amateur sports, promoting the City’s and the Province’s athletes and teams. His morning sports editorials had a vast following as far as the CFBC signal carried. He used the vehicle to push for the need for lights at Memorial Field and a major winter sports facility in Saint John. His Sunday morning sports talk show had an outstanding following, again his focus on amateur sports. In his spare time, he owned and coached hockey and baseball teams. Ingham was inducted into the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame on May 8, 1997. Surviving in addition to his mother Aleah Maude (Henderson) Palmer are three sons David and his companion Heather (Covey) and her son Nick of Saint John, Rob and his wife Joanne (Barry) of Quispamsis and Ingham’s grandchildren Rosalie, Aleah, twins Andrew and Annie and Conrad Ingham Palmer, Jamie and his wife Roxie (Harvey) and her daughter Krista, two daughters Ruth Palmer and friend Bud Connor of Saint John, Karen Palmer of Saint John, one brother Lloyd and his wife Marion of Rice Point, P.E.I., two sisters Aleah Lomas of Sherbrooke, N.S., Elizabeth Rossi and her husband Dino of Windsor, Ont. and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife and father. Resting at the Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. (634-1701). Funeral service will be held at the Exhibition Park Main Building on Friday, June 6, 2003 at 10 am. Visiting at "Fallsview" on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Donations to the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital or to the charity of the donors choice would be appreciated by the family. | Note* | John "cut down trees, cleared the land, raised cattle and crops, built mills, logged, stream drove and lumbered, built at least one vessel, was farmer, lumberman, miller, fisherman, sailor, trader, shipmaster and soldier", but "had never made grindstones", one of the favourite occupations of Westmorland County in the early days where grindstones were a measure of value.
His reminiscences included ordering of the Dorchester militia to St. John in 1813 to replace the 104th, which had marched to Quebec. "We marched the first day to the Bend (the Bend of the Pedicodiac, Moncton later). There was no road - only a pathway marked by blazed trees through the woods. There were no settlements - only an occasional house, where now there are towns and villages. We had a hard march through deep snow, made more difficult by the scarcity of provisions along the route. The next month February, 30 volunteers were called for to do garrison duty at Fort Cumberland until the artillery arrived from Halifax. I was one of them. We came up to Shepody in a schooner, of which Thomas Brewster was master and owner.
