His name is on the monument erected to thememory of the slain. He was born in Stonington; died in Griswold, Conn. son of Phineas & Elizabeth (--) Stanton. He was a Lieutenant in the American Army and was killed at Fort Griswold,Sept. 6, 1781. History says of him: 'He asked for quarter and no quarterwas given. He fought like a tiger and was shot to pieces.' He left sevenchildren under 15 years of age. By trade he was a goldsmith. Of thesechildren the names of but three are known. Martha and Betsey settled inStonington. Lodowick and the others are said to have gone to New York andsettled in and near Troy. (Stanton Gen.) |
