He was the son of John de Vere Knt., 12th Earl of Oxford and Elizabeth Howard.1
Marriage*John de Vere K.G., 13th Earl of Oxford married Lady Margaret Neville, daughter of Richard Neville 5th Earl of Salisbury and Alice Montagu.3
Biographical Note* On the beheading in February 1461-2 of his father and elder brother Aubrey, on account of their strong Lancastrian sympathies, John de Vere (or de Veer) became heir to the earldom of Oxford and to the hereditary office of great chamberlain. The earldom was not, however, restored to him until 1464. In his capacity as Lord High Chamberlain, he officiated at the coronation of King Edward IV's queen, Elizabeth Woodville, in 1465. Around the same time he married Margaret Neville, daughter of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury, and Alice Montagu, Countess of Salisbury, and sister of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick.

The Wars of the Roses was a civil war between the House of Lancaster and the House of York, taking place across England in the latter half of the 15th century. John de Vere was one of the principal Lancastrian commanders during the Battle of Bosworth Field, 22 August 1485. The battle was won by the Lancastrians.2,4
