| Note* | We first knew about Herman J. Mehner because Paul Ernest Mehner (b 1910,d. 1983) sent us a family tree that lists Herman in 1973 We later learned a clue from what his brother Paul E. Mehner said in a1935 Application For Presidential Postmaster that 'from 1891 to 1901because of his father's health (Paul) bought a small farm in Tracyton(near Bremerton, WA) and worked this with his brothers' (notice theplural brothers--that must have included Albert and Herman) We notice that he is Not included in the will written by his parents KarlErnst Mehner and Therisa Otto just before they left for their trip toGermany in 1910. We know that Herman was alive in 1910 in (about age 35?) when his motherand father took a trip to Saxony, Germany (his mother passed away at age61, June 14, 1910 in Riesa, Saxony, Germany while visiting her brother,there) and Herman J. is mentioned as one of the three surviving sons inher newspaper obituary (Bremerton Sun?). His other brothers were CarlErnest Mehner and Albert Hugo Mehner. The big breakthrough came when Paul Dewar of Bremerton told us in Oct.,2000 that he found Herman listed in the Death Records for WashingtonState: 'died at age 73 in Pierce Co., WA on Sept 16, 1945.' When we received his death certificate from the State Department ofHealth, everything fit together!: Herman spent his last 40 years in thesate mental hospital (Western State Hospital, Steilacoom, WA). He diedSeptember 16, 1945 at the hospital He is listed as: Male, White, Single,age 73. (this would make his date of birth in 1873.) His birthplace islisted as Germany (Burkhardsdorf, Saxony, we would assume where hisbrother Karl Ernst was born.) His occupation, like his brother was'tailoring'. His city of residence was Bremerton. His medical record is fascinating: 'immediate cause of death, cerebral hemorrhage- - one month due to Paralysis Angitans -- ten years due to Dementia Praecox -- 40 years' So, it appears that he suffered severe mental illness as early as 1906. It appears that there was a mistake in the listing of his father, 'PaulMehner' is listed, but Paul would have been his brother! His realfather's birth name was Karl Ernst Mehner seemed to give his name inseveral different ways! -- (see 'More' notes about Karl Ernst Mehner) --the funeral home at the time of his death listed him as 'Ernest PaulMehner!' It is sad that in the 20th century mental illness was such a socialstigma. At our Mehner family reunion in Aug. 2000 no one had ever heardof Herman, the brother of 'The Professor' (Albert Hugo and 'The Mayor'(Paul Ernest). With the help of several in our family, we have traceddown the story of Herman Mehner who was largely alone in the WesternState Hospital in Steilacoom for 40 years! | Note* | Karl came with his family to Ohio from Saxony, Germany in 1880. They then moved to Kitsap County, Washington in 1891 and lived nearTracyton and Bremerton, Washington. Karl and his son Paul Mehner established 'Mehner and Son' Naval Outfitters in Bremerton, Washington about 1900. I (John Jay Ruhlman) believe Paul later became Mayor of Bremerton (about 1919?). According to his birth certificate, Karl Ernst Mehner was born August 16,1845 in Burkhardtsdorf, Germany. He was the 'son of a married couple,Christian Gottlieb Mehner who owned a house in Burkhardtsdorf'. According to a letter dated Dec 22, 1998, from Martin Schreiter, the sonof the Burgermeister of Burkhardtsdorf, 'Karl married Therisa Amelia Ottoin 1871 in St. Johannes Church, Chemnitz'. We assume that this was anEvangelical (Lutheran) Church. However, Karl's eldest grandson KarlTrevor Mehner says in a letter dated February 1969, 'grandfather KarlErnst Mehner was a Baptist, and, as you no doubt know, our family werePresbyterians (in Bremerton, WA). He came at age 35 with his wife and sons (Paul was about 8 Herman wasabout 5? and Albert was about 3) to Mount Vernon, Ohio from aroundChemnitz, Saxony, Germany in 1880. We wonder what happened to the thirdbrother Herman! He seemed to be in Tracyton (near Bremerton) sometimebetween 1891 and 1901; Herman was alive when his mother died in 1910 on areturn visit to Germany. According to his grandson Karl Trevor Mehner,Karl Ernst Mehner was a 'tailor in the old country'. The family then moved to Kitsap County, WA in 1891. They lived inTracyton and Bremerton (see 'More about Paul E. Mehner '.) His son Paulsaid in a 1935 Presidential Postmaster Application that 'from 1891 until1901, on account of father's health, Paul bought a small farm at Fairview (near Tracyton across the narrows from Bremerton) and worked this withhis brothers' This implies that Karl Ernst was failing in health (age46!) and that the long lost brother Herman must have helped our two knownbrothers (Paul and Albert) on the farm at Tracyton somewhere between 1891and 1901. We know of Herman's existence because of a genealogical chartsent to me by Paul Mehner in the spring of 1970.-JJR Herman must havedied somewhere between 1910 and April 4, 1939 when his brother AlbertHugo Mehner's obituary in the Bremerton Sun did not include him. Because of his old country experience in tailoring, Karl and his son PaulMehner established 'Mehner and Son' (see photo from 1906) Naval Outfitters in Bremerton in 1901. Son Paul was later Clerk and then Mayor of Bremerton. He signed theletter as a clerk from the City Council of Bremerton that invited theNavy Department to build a Naval Base in Bremerton! Karl was with his wife Therisa Amelia Otto on a visit to her family whenshe died June 14, 1910 in Riesa, Saxony, German (Just north of Chemnitz)while she was visiting her brother. Karl Ernst died Aug 21, 1915 according to the records of the LewisFuneral Chapel, 5303 Kitsap Way, Bremerton, Washington 98312-2299, phone1-360-377-3836. Interestingly, his name was given as Ernest Paul Mehner! We really believe this was the same person because he is listed as 70years and 5 months old (corresponds with his birth certificate).According to his funeral record, he was cremated. He was living on Ohio Street, Bremerton, WA. There was a funeral service with Minister Deckerof Bremerton, officiating on Aug. 22, 1915. Of course, is occupation waslisted as a 'tailor'. His death certificate listed his name differently again (Ernest CarlMehner!) According to this document, he was born Aug. 16, 1845 and diedat age 70 years, 5 months on Aug. 21, 1915. His cause of death waslisted as Cardiac Asthma. He was cremated in Seattle. Interestingly, he is listed as 'married', although his first wife TherisaAmelia Otto had died on a visit to Germany in 1910. Here, five yearslater the Informant on the death certificate was E. C. Mehner ofBremerton. We believe this is his second wife, Anna, (whom he probablyhad married in Germany in 1910). She was Theresa's younger sister AnnaOtto (born Nov. 26, 1857 in Saxony, Germany, died January 4, 1929 inForks, WA.) - - According to Anna's death certificate. |

| Note* | We understand from another Mehner family study that the earlier spellingof the name was Mehnert. From John and Nancy (Mehner) Ruhlman's trip to Saxony in 1998, we learnedthat most of the modern German Mehners trace their ancestry to the silverminers of the Erz mountains (Erzgebirge) of Saxony. In 1168 there was a great silver discovery in Freiberg. The news drewpeople from Zwickau (50 miles to the southwest) and other distantmargrave lands. The Berggeschrei or 'call of the mountains' was followedby many families from Franconia (250 miles to the west in the Rhine rivervalley). By 1470 there was a larger silver deposit discovered in Schneeberg. By1500 there were about 8,000 people living in Schneeberg. The new churchdedicated to the mining patron, St. Wolfgang was completed in 1540. In1478 there were 167 silver quarries being worked around the city! The Wettin lands of the dynasties of Albrecht and Ernst were consideredthe wealthiest in the empire around 1500. In Annaberg, the greatAnnenkirche was built in 1499 and dedicated to the veneration of St.Anna, the patron saint of mining. Dr. Ingo Mehner said that the famous statue of the silver miner inBrand-Erbisdorf was that of Karl Heinrich Mehner (1885-1933) the last andbeloved silver miner there. He also said that the statue looks amazinglylike the photo of our Albert Hugo Mehner that we mailed him! ---from aletter dated Jan 13, 1999. By the close of the 16th Century, the silver ran out and the area began along, slow decline! Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the land wasnot suitable for farming and there was little income for the largepopulation of the Erzgebirge. One trade that led to prosperity was theproduction of wood products and toys in Olbernhau and Seiffen, wherethere is the well known toy museum exhibiting all manner of nutcrackers.Another means of earning a living was the production of stockings as isseen in the 'Strumpfdorfern' or 'stocking -producing' villages aroundThalheim... .--Saxony and It's History by Klaus Kratzsch,Leipzig, 1990 (Interestingly enough, the main industry in Burkhardsdorf was stockingproducing! Michael Stubbe (a Nebel family historian) told us in a letterof July 6, 1999 that Carl Gottlieb Mehner's daugher's husband,(CarlFriedrich Nebel) was a 'strumphfwirkermeister' translated literally'master stockingmaker'! The famous quality collector toy makers of Erzgebirge 'Steinbach' and'Albrecht' currently make toys in this area. Martin Schreiter, the son of the Burgermeister of Burkhardsdorf wrote usFeb 27, 1999 with a translation from the local church records: 'KarlGottlieb Mehner was born in another village. He came to Burkhardtsdorfand married Christiane Karoline Haenel Nov 11, 1804 in Burkhardtsdorf.' Michael Stubbe (above) also tells us that Carl Gottlieb Mehner'soccupations were 'Auszugshaulsers und Maurers' translated 'To move out ofhouses and Bricklayer'. Later, he operated an Ice Arena atthe head of the bay (Sinclair Inlet) at Gorst which he and his brotherBob built. They had 2 children, Orman Vaughn, born 1927 in Bremerton and Arline,born 1935 in Bremerton. He and Pauline were divorced in about 1945. He married Dorothy Home Quinn soon afterward. He was working in refrigeration and air conditioning. He was a pioneer in putting thermal heat in houses; he built a house inSteilacoom, Pierce County, on American Lake- piped water from the lake tothe Heat Pump to heat or cool the house! He and his wife Dorthy lived near his mother Eva Mae Damon Mehner Barnettfor a few months in Florida in about 1949 (See notes on Eva Mae Damon) He died in Tacoma of a heart attack. The statement below was taken from type written a copy of a letter andsigned by Karl Trevor Mehner February 1969, he died 07 April, 1969. 'I am Karl Trevor Mehner, born 09 July, 1905, in Juneau, Alaska. I thinkmy parents were married in Tacoma, Washington in 1904. They honeymoonedin Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington. 'My father came to the United States of America in 1880 from Saxony,Germany, when he was five years old. He lived with his parents andbrothers in Ohio for a short time before coming to the Puget Soundcountry. They farmed awhile at Fairview near Tracyton, across the Narrowsfrom Bremerton. My paternal grandfather was a tailor in the old country(Germany) and established 'Mehner and Son Naval Tailors and Outfitters'in Bremerton about 1900. The Son was my father's brother Paul. 'Due to farm work, my father was late going to High School, buteventually graduated from the University of Washington and then tookgraduate work. He taught science in Juneau, Alaska at the Juneau Highschool, and went on an expedition for the New York Museum of NaturalHistory in the wilds of Alaska. 'He later taught Science at the Ellensburg (Washington) High School andthen headed up the entire Science Department at the Central WashingtonTeacher's College until 1916, when he developed yellow jaundice and thedoctors insisted that he give up teaching, and take up outdooractivities. So in 1916 we moved to Grants Pass, Oregon for a year, andthen to Bremerton where brother Robert was born. 'Grandfather, Karl Ernst, was a Baptist, and as you no doubt know, ourfamily was Presbyterian. 'There is a stained glass window in the Bremerton Baptist Church whichwas built in 1912 (about 5th and Warren Streets) with the Mehner name onit.' We have a photo provided by his son Paul Ernst Mehner, of the Mayor laying brick for the first paved street in Bremerton. (World War I began in 1914). The photo is in the Mayor's scrapbook. Paul was born June 22, 1872 in Saxony (probably Burkhardtsdorf, just south of Chemnitz), Germany. He came with his parents and his two brothers (Albert and Herman) to Mount Vernon, Ohio. He attended high school from 1883-1887 at the Mount Vernon, Knox Co.,Ohio High School. He graduated in June, 1887. He worked in Mount Vernon, OH from 1887-1889 'I worked for my Father learning the tailoring trade'--from his November, 1935 Application for Presidential Postmaster, Bremerton, WA. In 1890 and 1891, he worked at the Puget Sound Dye Works in Seattle 'pressing and tailoring work one and two supervised. $60.00 per month board and room'--(1935 Application above) From 1891 to 1901 he moved to Tracyton, WA (near Bremerton) 'on account of father's health bought small farm and worked this with brothers' (opcit). This is fascinating to us because it implies that not only his brother Albert, but also his 'long lost' brother Herman was working with him in Tracyton sometime during this time. We still wonder what happened to his brother Herman Mehner! From 1901 until at least 1935, he 'started my present business of Merchant Tailoring Have employed as many as ten people. At the present three and four working in the shop depending on amount of work. In 1934 net from business: $2259.90, Rentals gross: $4486.60' (op cit). He became the Bremerton City Clerk from incorporation 1n 1900 to 1910--salary nothing to $20.00 per month. Paul Ernst Mehner was the Mayor of Bremerton, WA (Jan 3, 1912-Jan 6,1914--no salary). We have a photo provided by his son Paul Ernst Mehnerof the Mayor laying the brick for the first paved street in Bremerton. (World War I began in 1914) (That photo is in his scrapbook) He was appointed Postmaster of Bremerton March 2, 1915 by President Wilson 'there were about eight employees at that time. Salary was in the neighborhood of $300 per month' (op cit). Sometime between 1915 and1918, he was dropped from that position because as stated in his 1935 Application (op cit): 'Navy Department thought it best not to have a German born in office'. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association; he was elected Washington State Senator in 1932.--from a Register Report by Warren Dewar, July 18, 2000 His obituary adds that he was a Bremerton Port Commissioner and a former Director of the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce. In the 1920-21 Bremerton City Directory, Paul and Isabell Mehner is a 'tailor at 409 Washington Ave. His home was at 1224 Highland Ave.' We know that he lived in a 'French Country Farm Home on Highland Ave.' There is the Mehner Building (as of March, 1999) at 253 and 257 4thStreet, Bremerton. (Currently, 257 is the B.A. Gelschmann Co. Insurance since 1930. The Kitsap County Public Credit Union is in 253.) On page 105 Paul is mentioned in the Kitsap County History of 1977.There, it lists the following lodges where he was a member: Rebecca Lodge, Grand Army of the Republic and the Woodcraft Lodge. From my grandparent's house we could watch the Mountlake Bridge on the Ship Canal open and close. One day, my Aunt Grace walked my sister Nancy and I to the Mountlake playground. From there we could see the University (of Washington) Bridge open and close. I reasoned in my 3-year old mind that I could walk completely around Portage Bay! The next morning I set out with my little red wagon and did just that...past the playground, over Mountlake Bridge, past the U of W and over the University Bridge and back to the house. I wondered what the police were doing at grandma's place (I didn't know they were looking for me! Bob Jr. trusted Christ as his Savior at Camp Gilead near Carnation, WA when he was 9 years old. The Pastor of the old Tabernacle Baptist Church of Seattle, Forrest Johnson led me to the Lord. Childhood friends were the following neighbor kids when we lived at 6912 South 115th, Seattle: Donald Parks, Terry Kennedy, Mickey Musgrove, Carl Hugo and Henry Ellingsen. I attended the Emerson Elementary, Sharples Jr. High and Franklin High School. My high school friend was Fred Singleton--the two of us were always in trouble! I graduated in 1961. I made appointments and gave free samples for a Fuller Brush salesman while in High School. Another sales job was demonstrating fire extinguishers door to door. Can you imagine a teenager carrying a can of kerosene, matches and a cake pan up to someone's porch, making sure the person is home, setting fire to the kerosene in the cake pan and knocking on the door? I sold nearly every resident. After high school I attended Edison Technical school (the old Broadway HS, Seattle) where I took sheet metal layout and fabrication. After getting my certification, I went to work at Renton Boeing on Marginal Way. In April 1964 I enlisted in the US Army-served 6 years in USA, Germany and Vietnam. In 1966 while stationed in Germany I sent a one-way plane ticket to my HS sweetheart to come and marry me. I married Linda Wise on Jan 16, 1967 in Niederwerrn, a small town in Northern Bavaria. We honeymooned in Paris. Linda was in Germany 2 months before we married and I had set up an apartment for her in the town near our base. The landlady was explaining how to light the water heater for the heiss vasser (hot water)--but it sounded like Hice or Ice water...I thought the German ways were not going to be my ways. I drove 60 ton tanks and 155mm self propelled howitzers in Germany. Home on furlough, we set up housekeeping in Alexandria, VA across the Potomac from Washington DC. I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir where I attended US Army's school of engineering for drafting. From there, we moved from Virginia to California in our '63 Chevy II station wagon that we had bought in Washington DC. I was stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge. We took an apartment about 1/2 block from 'Hippie Central'--the corner of Haight and Ashbury in 1968. Later that year we had a duplex next door to the SF Zoo rent free (government owned) that overlooked the ocean. I was sent to Vietnam in 1969. I enjoyed a week of R and R with my wife in Hawaii in the fall of '69. After the service, we settled in Corona CA where I worked at the Alcoa Aluminum casing plant for 7 years. I took business courses at Riverside City College and also studied Police Science.' More notes below about Bud's later life. 'God is not only listening, but He wants to grant the desires of your heart. For some time now, I had been praying for a riding partner; a female who likes motorcycling and loves God. Wow! Well, folks, God answers prayer when we least expect it, and in ways I don't understand. After the March 20th (1999) C.M.A (Christian Motorcyclists Association) breakfast, an attractive woman approached me about riding 2nd seat on my Goldwing. Minimum riding gear required a helmet that she did not have. The ride was starting, so I said 'Maybe next time' and left. A month later, at the April 17th (1999) CMA breakfast, the same woman was there with complete riding gear and was ready to ride. She asked if she could ride with me, so I said 'sure.' The ride was north on Chuckanut Drive and stayed along the water all the way to Blaine. We stopped in Bellingham, and again at the Lummi Texaco. We had talked about a lot of things on the way, and found that we shared many interests. In some ways, my bike is like an altar, as I frequently talk with the Lord and sing praises to Him while riding. Not many miles into the ride, my soul began to sing....the weather was great, the ride even better, plus I had a pretty woman with me. In my joy, I began to sing 'Then sings my soul,,', and I looked in the mirror, only to find her watching me' OOPS! I quickly apologized for bursting into song but she said she liked it vert much, and to do it often. The destination was Blaine for lunch at Contos. We still had four and a half hours before she had to be back, so I asked her if she wanted to go to Silver Lake. She said she was just here for the ride, and I was doing the driving. We rode the twisties of South Pas and on to Silver Lake. We spent some time at the lake just talking and I couldn't believe how much we had in common. We continued the ride into Maple Falls and south on Mosquito Lake road into Acme, then south on Hwy 9 into Sedro Woolley, and finally back to her truck. We talked for another half hour. She told me she also had been praying to meet a Christian man who loved serving the Lord, singing hymns, and motorcycle riding. But then she said she was NOT looking for romance at this time--just a Christian man to ride motorcycles with until she could get her own bike. However, God had other plans for both of us!! On Tuesday, April 20, (1999) MSR (Morning Star Riders) rider nights began. Cary saw her truck at the Alger Texaco when he came for the ride. Cary's immediate reaction was 'BOB'S COMING!!' (phone 417)' 'I attended Cascade School in Charleston, grades 1, 2, and 3. MissKalander was Principle and third grade teacher.' 'About 1928, we moved 4 miles south of Bremerton to the old GorstHomestead and lived in the big two story Gorst Residence on Gorst Creek.(phone 1608-W-1) I attended Pleasant Valley School ( 1 room 6 grades, 30students) in the 4th and 5th grades. The twins, Glen and John Jorstad[the TV] sportscaster) were in my class.' ' We attended the Bremerton Baptist Church about 5th and Warren Streets.In 1929, my parents bought the Strand Apartments at 221 Belmont N (now is221 Bemont E) Seattle, (phone Capital 6158). We then moved across thestreet to the corner house, 232 Belmont N. at Thomas St. about 1931. Iattended Cascade Elementary School (Yale, Pontious, Harrison, ThomasStreets) for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Then we moved to 420 18thAve. N. (now E) about 1932. Bob's funeral was at the Carnation Bible Church, 32615 N.E45th Street, Carnation, Washington 98014. The officiant was Pastor SteveFarnworth, Pastor of the Carnation Bible Church. Bob is buried at theCarnation Cemetery, 6400 block, Carnation, Washington on theCarnation-Duval Road N.E. 98014. Bob's father, Albert Hugo Mehner had suffered from heart trouble broughton five years ago when the motor of a boat in which he and a son, Robert,were cruising, failed off Orcas Island. Bob's father rowed through highwaves and darkness for five hours before they reached shelter. His father became an invalid and his mother went into real estate, owningher company on Capital Hill. She (Eva Mae Damon Mehner) was one of thefirst licensed female Realtors in Seattle. Bob was baptized as an infant in the Westminster Presbyterian Church,1729 Harvard street in Seattle, 98122 He graduated from Broadway HighSchool. Bob Mehner and Ruth Coy met while attending a post graduate course atBroadway High School, Seattle, Washington (now Seattle Central CommunityCollege). They were engaged the day before Bob's father, Albert HugoMehner died in 1939. They were married in Ruth's parent's home in a formal ceremony performedby Pastor George L. Lorimer of the Tabernacle Baptist Church (15th Avenueand Harrison Street) in Seattle. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy in WWII and worked at the Naval Shipyardsat Bremerton, Washington. Bob and Ruth lived in housing area called WestPark, which was a few miles from the Naval Shipyard. The address was 70Baer Boulevard where Nancy and Robert, Jr. ('Bobby' 'Robin' 'Bud') wereborn. After three years stationed at the Alameda Naval Station, in the Bay areaCalifornia. They lived in an apartment in Berkeley while Bob was atAlameda Naval Station. Bob held the rank of Electronics Technician's Mate First Class. He spentsome time on the USS Buck for the first Naval Reserve Training cruise onthe west coast since the end of the war. When Bob was discharged from the Navy, they moved back to Seattle in theSkyway District, where they lived for 21 years (1947-1968) at 6912 South115th. Bob was employed by the Civil Aviation Authority (later known asthe Federal Aviation Administration or FAA) of the U.S. Government. Hewas a Radar Specialist, often working near Auburn maintaining the AirTraffic Control hardware and also took trips to the Stampede Pass Radarequipment in the Cascade Mountains. Bob and Ruth were members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Seattle for10 years and then helped to form the brand new Skyway Baptist Church inSouth Seattle. He was a man of faith and a Deacon of the Church,literally helping to build the church building. (The Skyway BaptistChurch has now merged with the South Center Baptist Church, Tukwila.) He retired in 1968 at age 50, sold their home at 6912 South 115th inSeattle, and purchased the 40 ft. ketch sailboat, the 'Saturna' with thedinghy, 'Saturnina'. Bob was a man with an inquiring mind; he gained hisAmateur Radio Operator's license when he was only 12 years of age, hiscall letters were: W7EVL; he ground and built his own telescope forbackyard observation of the stars; he taught Navigation at HighlineCommunity College, he built his own 24 foot sailboat, the; 'San Sucia',at McChord Air Force Base and surprised his whole family; he builtwonderful wind whirligigs for Camp Gilead, Carnation, Washington, wherehe was in charge of maintenance when he died. Oh yes, and he sailed halfway around the world with Ted Harmon of Bellingham (Ted bought the 65foot teak sailboat in Hong Kong and he and Bob sailed it to Hawaii, thenon to San Diego). Bob and Ruth did a lot of RV-ing in California and Arizona in a verysmall 8' travel trailer. You might say 'They covered the West Coastcamping and relaxing and sight seeing. Then they would moved on and whenthey saw a nice camp ground to say, they stayed for maybe a week beforemoving on, like a couple of vagabonds. After a few years of this, they decided to put some time helping at CampGilead, and ended up volunteering full time at Camp Gilead, a Christiancamp near Carnation, Washington. They lived in a small cottage at theCamp and parked their little trailer for good next to the cottage. At this time (November 17, 2000, Ruth still lives at Camp Gilead in thesame cottage, but has retired from assisting the Camp. Jewel Ruth (Coy) Mehner pass away at 4:05 PM 03 Oct 2001 at the GroupHealth Care Center in Bellevue, WA. and was buried 10 October 2001 at TheCarnation Cemetery, Carnation, Wa. |

| Note* | Emma Melin was cooking at the Pearson sawmill at Eothen. She had come to Lead, South Dakota, with her husband earlier from Sweden. While working at the mine in Lead, Mr. Merlin became ill and passed away from pneumonia. Troed and Emma were married at Eothen by Justice of the Peace, John Pearson, on 21 March 1906. In 1907 Emma and Troed bought the general store in Hulett from Storm and Youngman, also a new home, both built by 'Cap' Storms. They sold half interest in the store to Roy Bush and change the name to 'Bush and Pearson Store'. In 1908 Sam Sherman had arrived in the Alva area from Langdon, Missouri. On a Sunday shortly after his arrival, in company with another young man, he rode horseback to Hulett. Wishing to treat his friend Sam bought a nickels worth of peanuts at the Pearson store. In Missouri peanuts were ten cents a pound here they were twenty cents. Sam looked at the nickel sack of peanuts and then at Troed and said, 'If I can’t eat all of these will you take part of them back?' In 1917 the store was sold to the Rochdale Company, a cooperative. Pearsons moved to a ranch in the area. Later they returned to Hulett when Troed and Roy again became owners of the Bush and Pearson Store. Pearsons continued the business until Troed passed away on 13 September 1953. His wife and daughter continued the business until Emma passed away on 04August 1956. Troed had been a member of the Masonic Order since 1916 and at one time was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge. Masonic services were held at his funeral at the Hulett Cemetery. Troed and Emma’s children were; Clarence Elof (Emma’s son by her first marriage) born 2 August 1904: Mildred Olivia, born 15 January 1907; Troed Ivar, born 23 March 1908, Oscar Frederick, born 11 September 1909. Oscar never married and passed away 24 October 1958. Mildred married Arthur Greyville Morgan on 27 September 1948 at Gillette. He was born 12 April 1881 and passed away 10 October 1965 in Sheridan, Wyoming. Mildred continues to live in Sheridan (1981). Ivar married Jessie Mae Oudin on 22 April 1935. They live on the Pearson ranch north of Hullet. They have one daughter, Sharon, born 20 September1936. She is married to Arthur Burdick of Newcastle. They live in Kenai, Alaska, with their two sons Randy, born 14 June 1957 and Ronald ‘Ronnie’, born 7 September 1958. Clarence was Crook County treasurer for two terms, worked for an oil company in Rapid City, South Dakota, for a while then went into business in Hulett, Wyoming. He ran the business until his health failed and he moved to the Long Term Health Care Center in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
