Birth*He was born in 1809 in Richmond Mills, Malpeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.1 
He was the son of John W. Wallace and Sarah Stapley.2 
Biographical Note* As a young man he went to Nelson, New Brunswick, where he worked and met Catherine Weston, whom he married. After Ned and Kate were married they left New Brunswick for Prince Edward Island, settling in Alberton.
He owned and operated a general store in Alberton. He was also a miller. In 1844 he opened a tavern on the northeast corner of Church and Main Streets. In 1850 he was granted a license to sell spirituous liquors. He also operated the "Alberton House". He owned considerable land in and around Alberton. In Elmsdale he had another general store, and also operated a saw, steam, grist and shingle mill. He installed the first circular saw that came west to the Island in 1832. The mills were run for many years, and operated later by his son Bruce. He owned the land where his sister Hannah and Samuel Cannon lived up to the time their house burned to the ground along with the loss of five of their children on 4 April 1857.
