Biographical Note* Walter accompanied William, Duke of Normandy, to England, and fought at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. The only contemporary historian to name the Companions of William the Conqueror was William of Poitiers, who had lived in William's household. He named 12 men who fought with William, and Robert de Beaumont was one such Companion. A Latin poem attributed to Guy, Bishop of Amiens from 1058 to 1076, describes how near the end of the Battle of Hastings the body of the dying Harold was mutilated by four men, one of whom was Walter Giffard. This incident was ignored by two of the highest authorities of the time, William of Poitiers and the Bayeux Tapestry. Because of the exclusion of this incident by contempories it is generally considered not to have happened.2
