Note*Indexed by Sharon Howland. Calais Advertiser. p2. Calais Free Library,Union Street, Calais,Maine 04619, Date of entry: 19 Sep 1883. OBITUARY:Samuel Dyer, who departed this life Friday Sept 18, was born in Calais,June 29, 1790. In early life he was engaged in the lumbering business for some time. He enlisted and served his country as a soldier during the war of 1812. Mr. Dyer was twice married. In 1818, at the age of 28, he married Margaret Duke, who died in 1842. By her he had ten children, all of whom lived to grow up, married and scattered - three to the Pacific coast, one to Wisconsin - two remaining in Calais, four have passed away. Mr. Dyer was a democrat; always very set in his way, but gentle and considerate of the feelings and opinions of others. Strictly temperate, regular in his habits - conscientious in business. His life was a series of accidents. At the age of 33 when in the woods for the late Jones Dyer he met with his first cut on his knee which laid him by for a year, and left him with a stiff knee. In 1862 when coming from church his horse running away - threw him and his wife out, by which each had a limb broken. Mr. Dyer suffered while he lived with rheumatism in his stiff knee and broken leg - but through all was active, industrious and patient to the last. He has a sister, who is 90 years of age, living in Worcester, Mass., who can see, hear, and walk as erect as she could fifty years ago. One grandmother lived to be 100 years old. Mr. Dyer's age at his death was 93 years, 2 months and 10 days. He was a highly respected citizen, and his funeral, which took place at the Episcopal Church on Sunday, was very largely attended by the old residents from both sides of the river. He leaves a widow behind.' Personal Knowledge of JWP. Joseph W. Pehoushek, Punta Gorda, FL, Date of entry: 6 Aug 1999.
